GrInD plug in installation

Requirements

Software:

  • 64 bit Adobe InDesign CC 2019 for v1.1
  • 32 bit Adobe InDesign CS5.5 for v1.0

Operating Systems:

  • 64 bit versions of Windows 10

Fonts

We have had issues with certain versions of Padauk 2.9 and Padauk Book 2.9 being incompatible with InDesign (CC2019 and possibly later versions as well) this issue manifests itself by displaying the incorrect glyph for a given Unicode character, for example:

Hello World

renders something like

Jgnnq Ypnf

Unfortunately InDesign caches Unicode to glyph mapping data and the broken version of Padauk causes InDesign's font cache to become corrupt ensuring this error persists even after replacing the bad font with a fixed version.

Therefore as a first step before installing the plug-in, you should check that Latin text renders legibly using the Padauk font. In the event it does not you will need to take the following steps to force InDesign to regenerate it's font cache:

  1. Search for AdobeFnt*.lst using the Windows search tool, in the Program Files, Program Files (x86) and Documents and Settings or Users directories. On most systems this can be achieved by simply searching the C: drive.
  2. Delete them. Take care not to delete any files called AdobeFnd.db or FontNames.db, these are important for the correct functioning of InDesign.
  3. Reboot.
  4. Check Padauk renders correctly.

Plug-in

Installation

For the time being the development version does not come with an installer, but must be installed manually instead. The software is delivered in a .zip file. Follow these instructions:

  1. Quit the InDesign application.
  2. Unpack the zip to a local directory (the Desktop is a good place). This step is important as there seem to be problems with direct copying out of the zip into a Program Files subdirectory: It will appear to succeed but will actually fail on Windows Vista and above.
  3. Navigate to one of the following directories depending on whether you have a 32 bit or 64 bit install of Adobe InDesign, these assume a 64bit Windows Operating System install:
    64 bit InDesgin: \Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign <ver>\Plug-Ins
    32 bit InDesign: \Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe InDesign <ver>\Plug-Ins
  4. If you already have an older copy of the GrInD plug-in installed you will need to remove it first, then restart InDesign and quit it. See the Removal section below.
  5. Drop (Non-Roman Script Composer Resources) and Non-Roman Script Composer.pln into the Plug-Ins directory.
  6. Restart InDesign.

Removal

  1. Quit the InDesign application.
  3. Delete (Non-Roman Script Composer Resources) and Non-Roman Script Composer.pln from the Plug-Ins directory.
  4. Restart InDesign.

Issues and Work arounds

Export to PDF

Due to a bug in the InDesign's PDF exporter, producing PDFs through this route will result in rendering issues in the PDF. The workaround is to install a high quality PDF virtual printer and print to that, this process has been successfully tested with Adobe Acrobat Pro's and Foxit Reader's PDF printers. The InDesign's print dialog provides the same or substantially similar flexibility to the PDF Export dialog.
