What is HelpClaw?

HelpClaw is a universal troubleshooting repo for OpenClaw. Clone it, cd into it, open your favorite AI coding tool, and describe your problem. HelpClaw automatically loads as your personal support assistant — no setup, no configuration, no plugins.

It works because modern AI coding tools auto-read instruction files from the current directory:

Tool File it reads
Claude Code CLAUDE.md
OpenAI Codex AGENTS.md
GitHub Copilot .github/copilot-instructions.md

All three point to the same playbook (INSTRUCTIONS.md), so you get identical support regardless of which tool you use.

Quick Start

Three commands. That's it.

git clone https://github.com/silentobelisk/helpclaw.git
cd helpclaw
claude # or codex, copilot, etc.

Then just describe your problem:

"My gateway won't start and it says bearer token unavailable"

HelpClaw walks you through it step by step — like a patient friend sitting next to you.

Common Fixes (Offline-Ready)

These are pre-written, verified solutions to the most common OpenClaw problems. The AI reads them to give you accurate fixes without needing to fetch external docs — which matters when your internet or setup is the thing that's broken.

They're also plain markdown, so if your AI tool isn't cooperating either, you can just open the file and follow the steps yourself.

Guide What it covers
Gateway Won't Start Crashes, port conflicts, bad config, corrupt install
Bearer Token Error Auth failures, expired keys, wrong provider
Config Syntax Errors Bad JSON, missing commas, smart quotes
Slash Commands Not Working Commands not registered or not responding
Channel Not Connecting Discord / Telegram / Slack integration issues
OpenClaw Not Found "command not found", PATH issues, installation
Version Mismatch Outdated version, updating, downgrading
Permissions Errors EACCES, permission denied, sudo problems

How It Works

HelpClaw follows a 5-step support workflow:

  1. Listen first — understands your problem before jumping to solutions
  2. Gather info — tells you exactly which commands to run and what to copy back
  3. Check common fixes, then live docs — uses offline guides first, fetches docs.openclaw.ai when needed
  4. Walk you through the fix — numbered steps, one action at a time, always backs up first
  5. Escalate if needed — drafts a help post for the community Discord if it can't solve it

Full details in INSTRUCTIONS.md.

FAQ

Do I need to install anything? Nope. Just clone and cd in. Your AI tool does the rest.

Does this work with [tool X]? If your AI coding tool reads CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, or .github/copilot-instructions.md from the working directory, yes. Most modern AI CLI tools do.

What if my AI tool isn't working either? Open the common-fixes/ folder and read the markdown files directly. They're written for humans too.

Can I use this without an AI tool at all? Yes! The common-fixes guides are standalone. Open the one that matches your problem and follow the steps.

How do I update HelpClaw?

git pull
