I've created a "good first issues” label in this repo, since this is increasingly becoming a GitHub standard

any nominations for issues that should be so labeled?

once we have some issues labeled this way, maybe we could add something to README.md (or CONTRIBUTING.md) directing people to the label.

I've labeled several as "good first issue", including this one!
