adjustable width of buttons, etc.

The colored area for each button is pretty wide. I would like to have the width adjustable.

If I resize the browser-window to be very small the width of buttons is changing.
So how much work would it be to implement such a feature?

Or does it even exist? If yes where do I find the documentation?
