When the client shutdown call exists after the client stops sending and starts listening, no EOF is sent to the server so it will wait until the IO timeout to stop reading and finish flushing its buffer and shutdown the socket. By placing the client shutdown immediately after it finishes it sends an EOF causing the sever to stop reading and to finish flushing the echo back to the client.
