Tracking Issue for Style Evolution (RFC 3338) #105336

Description

This is a tracking issue for the RFC "Style Evolution" (rust-lang/rfcs#3338).

This feature will require development in rustfmt, a bit of development in cargo, and stabilization of both; it will also require ongoing work to develop (and document) new style editions, each of which will start out unstable and later get stabilized. This tracking issue should remain open until we've done the implementation and successfully tested it with a new (unstable) style edition.

About tracking issues

Tracking issues are used to record the overall progress of implementation.
They are also used as hubs connecting to other relevant issues, e.g., bugs or open design questions.
A tracking issue is however not meant for large scale discussion, questions, or bug reports about a feature.
Instead, open a dedicated issue for the specific matter and add the relevant feature gate label.

Steps

  • Open a new (nightly only) style edition 2024, and start adding style improvements to it incrementally, documenting them in the style guide
  • Implementation in rustfmt/cargo-fmt (both owned by t-rustfmt), specifics tracked in Tracking issue for style_edition rustfmt#5720
  • Stabilize the rustfmt and cargo-fmt options.
  • Stabilize the 2024 style edition
