Seems like this forum post isn't a stable way of determining the latest version.
Since the rest of the makemkv download was pulled from tianon's repo, I just grabbed how they determine which version is the latest since their logic, while more complicated, is more likely to be in sync.
I put it under the license since it's tianon's code.
I guess in theory I could remove the bash non-empty checks but the download will fail later anyway, and this might be a more useful error message.
I tested everything locally since I don't have a makemkv license.
