What we've done in the past is to make an alternate icon named like |
contrary to OSM-carto this one keeps the bill from "maki" for consistency for openstreetmap/id-tagging-schema#626

) with a more abstract one which should work better at small scale (especially the 
$sign is problematic in the old version):This icon is based on openstreetmap-carto (
