Quarto convert for script files (R, py)

quarto convert can convert between qmd and ipynb documents. Is it also planned to integrate this with formats such as a plain R files with special comments via knitr::purl (https://bookdown.org/yihui/rmarkdown-cookbook/purl.html) or a plain python script such as the ones created by VSCode when converted from a notebook?

This is actually pretty similar to the virtual document with all lines not belonging to the target language set to empty used for LSP support (see #239 (comment)), except the lines wouldn't be empty but prefixed by the langues comment character plus a special indicator (like #' )

It would be great if R and py scripts could also be supplied to quarto render.

• quarto render my_script.R could do something similar to knitr::spin().
• quarto render my_script.py could use the same conventions as R scripts, with prose and chunk options in specially prefixed comments. Or they could be in multi-line strings, similar to Keras tutobooks

In R, I like to build all code using .qmd files (R notebooks previously) due to its features and then being able to source them as conventional .R scripts. Therefore, I'm really looking forward to something like knitr::purl() for Quarto.

In Python, we can convert .qmd to .ipynb using quarto convert filename.qmd and then use VScode to convert .ipynb to .py with the option Jupyter: Import notebook as script. However, it would be also nice to have one direct command to accomplish that.

Just a heads up that since knitr 1.42, it is possible to use knitr::purl() on .qmd file.

Additional idea: This could (also) be implemented as an output format, e.g.

format: 
  html: default
  script:
    extension: py

The advantage is that this way one could include as an "other format", which a user could download e.g. from a published website. This way, the user can use the included code without having to have Quarto / kernel etc. installed.

All non-code contents could be included as comments with Markdown within.

Quarto 1.4 gained the ability to render R and Python scripts directly: https://quarto.org/docs/computations/render-scripts.html

@t-kalinowski This is not the same thing. The new feature is to render scripts as if they were Quarto documents / Jupyter Notebooks. This features request is about converting scripts to Quarto documents.
