I think this has been discussed extensively since 2017, but the consensus has been not to do this still so far; since users are going to request it more and more while 16S hangs around for a few more years, we should discuss adding it as an option, even if we don't routinely use it. I'll be happy to recruit an undergrad to evaluate whether we can use the paired-end reads since we must think there is some potential use for them (because we run 2x150 on the sequencers).
