Description

The issue from #10712 persists, as the last comments on the Issue mentioned prior to it being locked. This was not resolved by newer Python versions.

Currently, I'm seeing it appear very frequently with Python 3.9.13 but it affects a number of my machines and Python installations. It's often repeated at least 4 times per package being installed.

Expected behavior

Print the message at most once. Have some way to silence it.

pip version

21.1.1, 22.1.2

Python version

3.9.13

OS

MacOS 11.6.7 and 12.1

How to Reproduce

Install any package with pip

Output

DEPRECATION: Configuring installation scheme with distutils config files is deprecated and will no longer work in the near future. If you are using a Homebrew or Linuxbrew Python, please see discussion at https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/issues/76621

As per the warning, the current status can be found at Homebrew/homebrew-core#76621. From what I can tell reading that issue, the problem hasn't been fixed at the Homebrew end yet.

Yes, true. But the message is repeated so frequently and it affects so many users (personal and professional, both in my case) that not being able to suppress it using pip's options is kind of a bug or at the very least really good cause for a feature request, I suppose?

To quote the other OP (in an Issue where it was believed that this was resolved):

There is no rate-limit on this warning. There is no pip --use-deprecated option to quiet this warning. python3 -W ignore::DeprecationWarning -m pip doesn't work (and arguably shouldn't); -W ignore::Warning does work, but I assume there are other warnings I do want to see.

Incidentally, I just confirmed this is still the situation in pip 22.1.2

Maybe we could simply switch to use DeprecationWarning to make supressing work?

22.2 (2022-07-21)

Deprecations and Removals

Remove the
html5lib
deprecated feature flag. (
[#10825](pypa/pip#10825) <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/10825>
_)

Remove
--use-deprecated=backtrack-on-build-failures
. (
[#11241](pypa/pip#11241) <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/11241>
_)

Features

Add support to use
truststore <https://pypi.org/project/truststore/>
_ as an
alternative SSL certificate verification backend. The backend can be enabled on Python
3.10 and later by installing
truststore
into the environment, and adding the

--use-feature=truststore
flag to various pip commands.

truststore
differs from the current default verification backend (provided by

certifi
) in it uses the operating system’s trust store, which can be better
controlled and augmented to better support non-standard certificates. Depending on
feedback, pip may switch to this as the default certificate verification backend in
the future. (
[#11082](pypa/pip#11082) <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/11082>
_)

Direct URL format. (
[#11137](pypa/pip#11137) <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/11137>
_)

Add
pip inspect
command to obtain the list of installed distributions and other
information about the Python environment, in JSON format. (
[#11245](pypa/pip#11245) <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/11245>
_)

Significantly speed up isolated environment creation, by using the same
sources for pip instead of creating a standalone installation for each
environment. (
[#11257](pypa/pip#11257) <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/11257>
_)

Add an experimental
--report
option to the install command to generate a JSON report
of what was installed. In combination with
--dry-run
and
--ignore-installed
it
can be used to resolve the requirements. (
[#53](pypa/pip#53) <https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/53>
_)

Hi,

We are reverting #11229 in 22.2.2 because it actually make our deprecation warnings hidden by default.

An alternative is to use python -W ignore:DEPRECATION -m pip ... which will ignore all warnings starting with the word DEPRECATION, which is all pip deprecation warnings.

[update] Note that ignoring like this may hide other important warnings - use with caution.

See #11330 (comment) for more details.
