This model was originally written for MLE fitting, and the RV can get unstable with sampling. This bug would only come up with PPCs, which I don't see many users attempting with this model.

A quick fix would be to clip the values in the rng_fn. A quick copy/paste swap should do the trick:

I don't think this is a bug. Why must variance be bigger than zero with a discrete variable? I think the test should be relaxed. You could make the same "failure" with a Poisson, Geometric/Binomial with extreme enough parameters

It doesn't - my first commit relaxed this requirement, but it came back after resolving a merge conflict. I've re-pushed it.
