At somepoint need a dynamic gui for tuning module parameters.

some think-out-loud:

this may require a bit more threading, but not too hard. in addition to a straight scheduler.execute() function, a scheduler.start() function which gets things running in the background. While that is going, calls like scheduler.setparam("something", 3.14) enqueues a param-change job. Or maybe you tell the plasm to enqueue the parameter change event and the scheduler checks the plasm for events. Maybe we can talk directly to the modules, thereby keeping the interface more consistent between the case with a loop w/ singlethreaded scheduler executing graph once, and async situation with threadpool scheduler running in separate thread.
