What changed

Reuse decoded MCP response envelopes during text and key extraction to reduce allocations while preserving scan findings, field ownership, and inspection limits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance

    • Improved response inspection efficiency by processing decoded data directly, reducing redundant JSON processing and allocations.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Preserved existing depth, media-budget, key-count, truncation, and invalid-input handling during visible-text and key extraction.
    • Improved handling of nested values, Unicode, escaped content, media content, and response metadata.

📝 Walkthrough

JSON-RPC extraction now supports decoded values as well as raw JSON input. Response-envelope inspection uses the decoded-value helpers instead of re-encoding the envelope before extraction.

Changes: JSON-RPC Value Extraction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Value-based extraction helpers
internal/mcp/jsonrpc/jsonrpc.go, internal/mcp/jsonrpc/value_views_test.go
Added helpers to extract visible strings and keys from decoded values. Raw-input functions decode and validate before delegating. Tests cover parity, scalar values, limits, media handling, and invalid JSON.
Response-envelope value inspection
internal/mcp/scan_remainder.go, internal/mcp/scan_remainder_value_test.go
Response-envelope inspection extracts strings and keys directly from the decoded envelope. Tests cover envelope views, depth-limit rejection, and benchmarks.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~12 minutes

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 16653

The optimization preserves the existing JSON-RPC extraction and response-inspection behavior and is mergeable with normal checks.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 16653

The optimization preserves the inspected response-scanning controls. No new externally reachable entrypoint, additional authority, or security-control bypass was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected attack surface remains server-controlled response content entering the existing MCP scanner. Source and caller inspection identified no new runtime entrypoint or authority transition; the change alters the representation used during inspection.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced or worsened bypass was identified in the inspected path. The base-to-head comparison retains the traversal behavior, and the runtime caller continues to reject incomplete media inspection and uninspectable envelopes before accepting a clean result.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The direct-value helpers trust callers to provide validated, immutable decoder-shaped values. The production envelope caller satisfies that obligation through strict decoding and sequential local ownership, while the helpers retain depth, key-count, and media-budget controls.

🔵 Trivial · Decode the envelope once and run the key gate on the decoded value. · scan_remainder.go:32-38

internal/mcp/scan_remainder.go:32-38
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Decode the envelope once and run the key gate on the decoded value.

responseEnvelopeRemainder still parses raw twice. Line 32 uses ExtractKeysFromJSONResult, which runs a full json.Decoder decode plus json.Valid. Line 36 then runs a second full decode with extract.DecodeJSON. This PR adds ExtractKeysFromValueResult to avoid repeated decodes on this path.

You can decode once with extract.DecodeJSON. Then run ExtractKeysFromValueResult on that value before the pruning loop mutates it. The gate still checks the complete, unpruned message. TestResponseEnvelopeValueViewsRejectDepthBeforePruning still covers the change.

♻️ Proposed refactor
-	if jsonrpc.ExtractKeysFromJSONResult(raw).Truncated {
-		return responseEnvelopeViews{}, false
-	}
 	var envelope map[string]any
 	if extract.DecodeJSON(raw, &envelope) != nil {
 		return responseEnvelopeViews{}, false
 	}
+	// Check the complete message before removing any consumed subtrees.
+	if jsonrpc.ExtractKeysFromValueResult(envelope).Truncated {
+		return responseEnvelopeViews{}, false
+	}

Before you apply this, confirm that extract.DecodeJSON rejects every input that json.NewDecoder(...).Decode plus json.Valid rejects. Trailing data is one example.

Update responseEnvelopeRemainder to decode raw only once with
extract.DecodeJSON, then apply jsonrpc.ExtractKeysFromValueResult to the
complete envelope before the pruning loop mutates it. Preserve rejection of
truncated values and ensure extract.DecodeJSON rejects the same invalid or
trailing-data inputs as the prior decoder-plus-json.Valid gate.
