ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused bug fix that ensures timed-out tailscale probe process groups are force-killed after a short grace period, with a targeted regression test and no changes to normal probe results or product defaults. The remaining changes are limited to test dependencies and lockfile metadata. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

it with the forked `readTailscaleStatus` fiber or applying a real-time timeout.
Ensure process cleanup is registered before the read, and interrupt or join the
fiber when the read fails or times out.

tailscale status and debug prefs were spawned without forceKillAfter, so on timeout cleanup sent SIGTERM to the process group and never escalated. A group member that ignores SIGTERM, such as the macOS binary behind the sh wrapper, kept running. Escalate to SIGKILL after a 500 ms grace. Fixes pingdotgg#21609
The test waited for its fixture with a wall-clock Effect.timeout and polled for the group's exit on a real-clock schedule. It now drives the probe timeout with TestClock.adjust and waits on a FIFO that every process-group member holds open, so EOF means the whole group is gone. A group member that catches SIGTERM reports itself after a short linger, so a probe that never escalates to SIGKILL fails the assertion in a few seconds instead of hanging on the read.

Problem
When
tailscale status --jsonhits its timeout, the probe can keep running after the call has failed (#21609).readTailscaleOutputinpackages/tailscale/src/tailscale.tsspawns the command withoutforceKillAfter, so on timeout cleanup sends SIGTERM to the process group, waits up to a second and never escalates. Any group member that survives SIGTERM is left running. In the report that was the macOS Tailscale binary behind theshwrapper, which launchd then adopted and which started the menu-bar app.Change
The probe command is built with
forceKillAfterset to 500 ms, so after SIGTERM and that grace the spawner sends SIGKILL to anything in the group that is still alive.tailscale statusandtailscale debug prefsshare this helper, so both get it. How often the probe runs (#14517, #19402) and running the binary without the wrapper are not touched. Theservepath (runTailscaleCommand) has the same missing escalation and is left out of scope here; it could be a follow-up.@effect/platform-nodeis added as a devDependency ofpackages/tailscale, as inpackages/ssh, because the test needs the real Node spawner.Scope and approval

Verification
New test in
packages/tailscale/src/tailscale.test.ts,tailscale probe cleanup > kills a timed-out status probe whose process group outlives SIGTERM(skipped on Windows). A faketailscalefirst onPATHis anshwrapper whose leader dies on SIGTERM while another group member catches it, lingers 3 s and then reportssurvived. Every group member holds a FIFO open, so the test waits for its EOF instead of polling, and the probe timeout is driven withTestClock.adjust.Without the change it fails every time (
a process group member outlived the probe: expected 'survived\n' to equal ''). With it the test passed 9 out of 9 runs and the package passes (7 tests). Format, lint and the package typecheck are clean. Not checked: the macOS GUI launch itself, a group leader that ignores SIGTERM (covered by the same SIGKILL path but not tested), and Windows, where cleanup already uses
