…etch timeout When Git would use its default OpenSSH transport and the local ssh accepts LogVerbose (OpenSSH 8.5+), fetchRemote sets a GIT_SSH_COMMAND that logs only ssh's sign-request and packet-send debug lines. A sign request with no packet after it for 10 seconds means the SSH agent is waiting on the user, so the fetch stops git and fails with an error that says to approve or unlock the key. Custom SSH commands, GIT_SSH overrides, older ssh and Windows keep the existing behaviour. ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This production fix adds a non-trivial SSH capability probe, environment override, stderr state machine, and competing authorization timeout to existing fetch operations. Although the scope is focused and tests are extensive, the new process and timing behavior on the default SSH path merits human review. Notes:

Problem
Starting a thread with New worktree and Start from origin fetches the selected branch before creating the worktree. With an SSH remote and a GUI agent awaiting key approval, that fetch makes no progress and fails after 30 s with
Git command timed out.The error points at the network or repository even though the key has not been authorized. The 1Password SSH agent asks whether to approve the requesting app's use of the key. If locked, it needs Touch ID or the account password to unlock. Its authorization model describes approval for private-key use, and its background-request documentation explains that a background request can wait behind the app icon. OpenSSH blocks in the agent's sign request until the user answers or the agent gives up. Git's terminal and askpass suppression does not suppress approval inside the agent.
The issue reproduction used an 18-ref, 3.5 MB repository that fetched in about 1.1 s once authorized. Leaving the approval unanswered reproduced the full 30 s T3 timeout. This is a signing wait, rather than evidence of a slow transfer.
Change
fetchRemotewatches signing only when Git would use its default OpenSSH transport and a capability probe acceptsLogVerbose. It passes this command to Git:ssh -o 'LogVerbose=sshconnect2.c:sign_and_send_pubkey():*,packet.c:ssh_packet_send2_wrapped():*'A
debug3:line containingsign_and_send_pubkeyandsigning usingstarts a 10 s authorization window. A subsequentdebug3:packet-send line fromssh_packet_send2_wrappedclears it. Another signing line starts a fresh window. Unrelated stderr does neither. A queue loop measures the window from the clock time when the signing line was read, so scheduling the watcher late does not extend the wait.If no packet follows within 10 s, the fetch fails with:
Interrupting the fetch closes its process scope and terminates git and its ssh child. The error uses fixed text, with no SSH stderr or key fingerprint copied into it. Both scoped and all-branch fetches use this check, including the existing missing-ref fallback.
The probe is
ssh -G -F none -o '<LogVerbose option above>' localhost, bounded to 1 s and cached once per driver. It checks option support without connecting or reading user or system SSH configuration. Each eligible fetch first readsgit config --get-regexp '^(core\.sshcommand|ssh\.variant)$'. Only exit 1, meaning neither setting exists, enables probing. A config-read error or failed probe disables the watch. The watch is off on Windows, with configured
core.sshCommandorssh.variant, with any ofGIT_SSH_COMMAND,GIT_SSHorGIT_SSH_VARIANTpresent, including empty values, and with OpenSSH before 8.5, which lacksLogVerbose. These paths keep today's 30 s timeout and the user's command. The change adds one config read per eligiblefetchRemotecall, including HTTPS remotes, and one cached SSH probe. For a watched fetch, the command-lineLogVerbosereplaces a user's configuredLogVerbosefor that process.Scope and approval
Closes #11930.
The maintainer triage confirms the agent-signing stall and accepts a server fix that detects the wait and returns an authorization-specific error. It explicitly separates this issue from #10916. #10943 is a timeout-only change for #10916. This PR does not change the command timeout or any caller.
This carries forward the closed #11946 by @Gigioxx:
LogVerboseon Git's default ssh, signing-line/packet-line pairing, custom-command and old-SSH exemptions, and much of the error message. It adds the Windows exclusion, caches the probe once per driver, and measures from the signing line with a queue loop instead ofStream.debounce. The tests follow the current file style and fake both the git config read and capability probe. Verification adds real-OpenSSH checks and a separate macOS confirmation check. The same command on this branch passes all 148 tests, including all three approval waits.
The three stall tests advance the test clock 11 s and bound their join to 1 s of real time. They assert the exact authorization error, process-handle release, and no fingerprint in the error message or encoded error. The other five new tests cover a slow network after signing, custom

Linux x64, Node 24.18.1, OpenSSH 10.2p1, git 2.55.0. The base driver and this branch each ran through a bundled runner calling the real
makeGitVcsDriverCore().fetchRemotewith the real Node spawner. A local sshd and real ssh-agent used a proxy to hold or release signing requests and a second proxy to delay the SSH banner. Each case restarted the fixture, with isolatedHOMEandTMPDIR. A pass-through spawner recorded fetch stderr and process IDs without changing execution. No 1Password settings or live credential prompt were used. The scratch runners are evidence tools outside this PR. Each run, from their scratch directory:
Held signing request,
./fixture.sh start hold, never released:A held sign request changes from the generic timeout at 30.04 s to the authorization message at 10.13 s; git and ssh are gone after both runs.
Both git and ssh were present 5 s into each run and absent 1.5 s after exit. The patched run emitted 1,173 stderr bytes before stalling; the proxy observed the client close 10.007 s after holding the sign request and dropped that request.
Two success cases checked that the signing window does not become a connection deadline:
Releasing signing after 5 s succeeds on both drivers, and a 15 s connection delay produces no false authorization error.
The release timing starts before Node loads the runner, which explains fetch timings slightly below 5 s. No git or ssh process remained after either released-request run.
A held request with a custom command checked the exemption:
The wrapper executed the fixture ssh. Before failed with
Git command timed out.at 30.04 s, 30.27 s wall; after returned the same error at 30.06 s, 30.24 s wall. The patched driver passed noGIT_SSH_COMMAND, and both git and ssh were gone after exit. With
./fixture.sh start auto, the patched fetch succeeded in 0.20 s and emitted 1,996 stderr bytes, about 0.2% of the 1,000,000-byte cap. The released and slow cases emitted the same byte count. The fixture's successful fetch had 18 lines, 15 of them packet-send lines. OpenSSH filters channel data and window adjustments from this log, but keepalives and rekeys can add lines; this small-repository measurement is not a bound for every fetch.Thread start in the browser
Linux x64, Node 24.21.0, OpenSSH 10.2p1, git 2.55.0. Real Chromium, Chrome/154.0.0.0, Linux x86_64, in an isolated incognito profile.
A local T3 server and web client ran from this branch and, for comparison, with the driver from main at
ed0f7b908b, using throwaway state and the same held-signing fixture. The demo project was under$TMPDIR/t3-demo/project; a test-only provider stub ensured no model ran. In each build, the browser selected New worktree, chosemain, checked Start from origin, and sent a prompt.Main shows the generic Git timeout after 30,506 ms, with the thread's Retry button visible.
This branch shows SSH approval and HTTPS guidance after 10,455 ms, with the thread's Retry button visible.
After the agent approved the next signing request, clicking the thread's Retry button created the worktree from
origin/main. The resulting worktree's HEAD matchedorigin/main. The test setup's stub provider then stopped the turn as expected; that stop is unrelated to workspace preparation.Real agent prompt on macOS
macOS 26.5.2, Apple silicon, Node v24.18.1, OpenSSH 10.2p1, git 2.56.0. The same bundled runners called the real driver with a throwaway OpenSSH agent, a confirm-on-use key and a generic macOS dialog asking whether to allow the signing request. An unprivileged loopback sshd served a disposable repository, with isolated
HOMEandTMPDIR; the client used the default-ssh path with nocore.sshCommandorGIT_SSH*overrides. No global Git or SSH configuration changed, and the 1Password SSH agent and all 1Password settings were left untouched. Each run, from the isolated evidence directory:
The throwaway OpenSSH agent's real confirmation dialog stays unanswered during the patched fetch.
The patched driver reports the authorization wait at 10.09 s and succeeds after Allow at 0.75 s; main reaches the generic timeout at 30.03 s.
The approved fetch authenticated with the server and fetched an
origin/mainref matching the bare repository'smain. Git and client ssh were absent one second after every run exited. The dialog screenshots contain no key or account identifier and do not show a 1Password prompt. Not checked:
