  • Users who keep settings in a dotfiles repository and link them into the T3 home lose the link on the first save from the app, so the repository silently stops reflecting the configuration in use.
  • The drift is invisible until someone notices the two copies disagree, and by then each has changes the other lacks.
  • Server, desktop, and client settings should all be versionable the same way.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 6039127

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused settings persistence fix that preserves symlinks during atomic writes and follows their destinations during reloads, with coverage for linked, dangling, cyclic, and repointed paths. Regular file behavior remains effectively unchanged, and the PR introduces no schema, deployment, product-default, or static-analysis configuration changes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Settings writers now resolve symlink targets before replacing files. Server settings change subscriptions watch both the settings path and its resolved target.

Changes

Symlink-aware settings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve symlink targets
packages/shared/src/symlink.ts, packages/shared/package.json
Adds and exports resolveSymlinkTarget, which follows symlinks for up to 40 hops.
Write settings to resolved targets
apps/server/src/atomicWrite.ts, apps/server/src/atomicWrite.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopAppSettings.ts, apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopAppSettings.test.ts, apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopClientSettings.ts, apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopClientSettings.test.ts
Server atomic writes and desktop settings writers use resolved targets for temporary files and final renames. Tests cover existing and dangling symlinks, symlink cycles, relative links through symlinked parent directories, and missing parent directories.
Watch settings links and targets
apps/server/src/serverSettings.ts, apps/server/src/serverSettings.test.ts
The server watches the settings path and its resolved target, then merges matching events before debouncing. Tests cover target edits, link repointing, and dangling targets.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 60391

No actionable merge-blocking risk is established; the settings subscription remains active if a target watch fails.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 60391

Linked settings now update their destinations without breaking the links. Server settings changes still require authenticated write access, and settings callers do not choose arbitrary destination paths. A concurrent local link change can nevertheless leave a successful save attached to the previous destination.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Writers resolve the settings link once, then stage and replace that destination without revalidating the link mapping. Concurrent local repointing can therefore leave a successful save at the previous destination while the configured path selects another file. Server cache publication and desktop in-memory updates can then reflect configuration different from the file subsequently loaded, including desktop server-exposure settings. This requires an external concurrent filesystem change; ordinary saves remain atomic, and application-side synchronization limits competing application writes.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Write scope now includes destinations selected by the local settings-link chain, potentially outside the original settings directory, subject to the application's operating-system permissions. Redirecting this behavior requires influence over the configured path, its links or filesystem parents; settings-value mutation alone does not select an arbitrary destination. Deployment privilege and cross-user filesystem exposure were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The server authenticates WebSocket upgrades and binds the resulting session to RPC handlers. Settings mutation passes through a session-scope check requiring orchestration-operate authority; the filesystem change does not bypass that inspected control.
  • observed — Desktop client-settings IPC decodes the settings payload before invoking an environment-path-owned writer. The inspected central IPC registration and settings handler contain no sender-origin validation; whether untrusted renderer content can reach that existing boundary remains unresolved.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Server staging uses a scoped temporary directory, while the desktop writer has no explicit staged-file cleanup on replacement failure. That desktop cleanup behavior predates the path-resolution change. Target-watch failures are suppressed within the target branch, preserving the independent configured-path watcher rather than terminating all watching.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Where external processes may repoint settings links during saves, define coordinated target ownership or explicitly detect and report a changed link mapping before acknowledging the saved configuration. A pathname recheck alone should not be treated as protection against adversarial filesystem races.

settings-link change resolves the link again and replaces the target watch when
the resolved path changes; continue watching the current target when it remains
unchanged.

refers to a symlink and fail instead of returning it; preserve returning current
when resolution ends at a non-symlink path.

* refactor(server): replay guards stay in CloudLink (pingdotgg#16349)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(server): forks no longer merge into their upstream repo's project group (pingdotgg#16353)

Fixes pingdotgg#4880. Originally pingdotgg#14639 by @Project516.

Co-authored-by: Project516 <138796702+Project516@users.noreply.github.com>

* fix(server): main's startup auto-pull test compiles again (pingdotgg#16357)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(server): project favicons stop being rescanned every minute (pingdotgg#16206)

Favicons in ProjectEnrichmentService now keep for 15 minutes. Repository identity keeps its 1-minute TTL, so remote changes still show within a minute.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(server): Claude limits load again for users with large transcript histories (pingdotgg#16358)

The Claude capabilities probe now asks for usage with skipBehaviors, so it no longer scans every local transcript and misses its 4 s deadline. Takes over pingdotgg#14456.

* fix(relay): export traces through one tracer, one request span each (pingdotgg#16382)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* chore(contracts): take the Moatless V2 backend into the upstream merge

Regenerate the threads.getShell fixture as a V2 row, decode it as the RPC
layer does, drop four UnsupportedMethodError entries the V2 backend now
serves, and reconcile docs/fork/gaps.md with soaplabs/moatless#1068.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode a Moatless V2 thread projection fixture

The fixture comes from the moatless feat/t3code-v2-timeline-and-sessions
branch and holds every timeline item kind it translates tool calls into,
its plans, and the provider rows that let a client steer a running turn.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests in the Typecheck workflow

Its Moatless fixtures are the one check that a backend response decodes
against the schemas the client reads, and the package is small enough for
the 4 CPU / 8 GiB runner.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* ci: run the contracts tests before the typecheck

The runner loses contact during pnpm typecheck, which skipped the
fixture decodes queued after it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* test(contracts): decode the V2 projection's node rows

Regenerated from soaplabs/moatless#1071 at ed50318e, which backs every
rootNodeId and nodeId with a node row.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* docs(fork): narrow the V2 gap to what moatless#1071 still refuses
