Problem

On macOS, stable and Nightly T3 Code builds can repeatedly ask for access to data from other apps. Selecting Allow does not stop later prompts, and a prompt can appear again after the app is fully quit with Cmd+Q.

Cause

T3 Code used tailscale status --json during passive configuration and endpoint reads. With the macOS Tailscale app, this command starts a binary inside the Tailscale application. macOS then attributes the data-access request to T3 Code. Each later configuration read could start the command again.

Fixes #11929. This is a regression related to #2737. A newer remote-open target path did not use the earlier desktop cache.

Fix

  • Find the local Tailscale IPv4 address on the interface that also has an address in Tailscale's IPv6 range, fd7a:115c:a1e0::/48. Addresses in 100.64.0.0/10 without one, such as carrier-grade NAT, are ignored.
  • Resolve the MagicDNS name through the operating-system resolver, which supports macOS scoped DNS routes.
  • Remove Tailscale command fallbacks from passive server and desktop discovery.
  • Cache found and missing names for 60 seconds per address.
  • Apply a 1.5-second lookup limit.
  • Keep a shared lookup running while any caller waits for it.
  • Keep Tailscale commands for explicit pairing and dev-share operations.

Compatibility

  • Raw Tailscale IP and mDNS fallback behavior does not change.
  • DNS failure returns no MagicDNS name and does not fail configuration reads.
  • Advertised addresses remain IPv4-only.
  • Custom control-server names, such as Headscale ones, are still advertised. A tailnet with IPv6 turned off has no address in Tailscale's IPv6 range, so it falls back to the raw Tailscale IP and mDNS.

Verification

  • 38 focused tests pass across 5 test files.
  • Changed-file formatting and lint pass.
  • Type-checks pass for packages/tailscale, apps/server, and apps/desktop.
  • A live check on the affected Mac returned its MagicDNS name in 9 ms without starting the Tailscale command.
  • Not tested against a live Headscale server.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change replaces passive Tailscale status reads with local interface and reverse-DNS discovery. Desktop endpoint resolution and server remote-open targets use the discovered MagicDNS name. The discovery service caches results, shares concurrent lookups, and returns no name when lookup fails or times out.

Adds a Node-backed discovery service that selects an eligible Tailscale IPv4 address and reverse-resolves its hostname. The service normalizes and validates names, caches results, and handles lookup failures and timeouts. Tests cover selection, caching, concurrent callers, and timeout behavior.
Desktop endpoint integration
apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopServerExposure.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/tailscaleEndpointProvider.ts, apps/desktop/src/backend/*test.ts, apps/desktop/src/main.ts
Desktop exposure passes the discovered name to endpoint resolution. The resolver accepts a nullable name and adds a MagicDNS endpoint when one is present. The local-only early return remains in place.
Server target integration
apps/server/src/environment/RemoteOpenTargets.ts, apps/server/src/environment/RemoteOpenTargets.test.ts, apps/server/src/server.ts
Remote target resolution reads the name from the discovery service. The server runtime provides the discovery layer, and tests supply discovery effects.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to f9b04

Passive discovery no longer runs Tailscale status commands, while missing DNS names retain existing fallback behavior. No concrete merge-blocking issue is established; proceed with normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f9b04

Background discovery avoids launching Tailscale, but reverse-DNS names now influence connection and pairing destinations without proving that they identify this machine. Misrouting would require control over name resolution and additional configuration or user actions. Credential disclosure has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new discovery path promotes an OS-resolved PTR name to a trusted Tailscale destination without establishing that it identifies the selected local machine. An attacker able to influence that resolution could supply a different hostname. With Serve enabled, an attacker-controlled HTTPS endpoint returning a successful probe response could become an available pairing destination; server remote-open links also consume the name. This is a weakened identity-provenance boundary compared with Tailscale self-reported status, but credential theft and SSH compromise are not verified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Potential misrouting affects hosts whose resolver answers can be influenced and clients that use their advertised pairing or remote-open destinations. Desktop pairing exposure additionally requires an available endpoint and user use of its link; server publication requires a local SSH listener. The inspected flow does not establish cross-tenant compromise or new listener authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A controlled resolver answer could introduce an attacker-owned hostname into endpoint advertisement. A successful HTTPS probe could make it selectable for a credential-bearing pairing URL. Remote-open clients also select the first advertised target unless an SSH alias overrides it. These are supported misrouting paths, not verified credential disclosure or SSH authentication bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing controls constrain exposure: desktop skips Tailscale advertisement when network exposure and Serve are disabled, MagicDNS endpoints remain unavailable without a successful Serve probe, unavailable endpoints are excluded from pairing selection, and configured SSH aliases take precedence over advertised remote-open hosts.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Address-keyed caching avoids reusing an old address's result after an address change, while lookup failure degrades to a missing name rather than preventing fallback advertisement. This contains discovery failures but does not validate successful identity results.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep process-free discovery, but treat PTR names as candidates until an address-to-name or authenticated machine-identity binding is established before trusted advertisement and credential-bearing pairing. Preserve custom control-server domains and fallback behavior rather than relying solely on a fixed domain suffix.

🟡 Minor · Revalidate an in-flight result when the address set changes. · TailscaleIdentity.ts:53-180

packages/tailscale/src/TailscaleIdentity.ts:53-180
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Revalidate an in-flight result when the address set changes. discover reads the interfaces before cacheLock and awaits the captured Deferred after releasing the semaphore. If the set changes from A to B, a later call replaces the cache with B, but the earlier call still returns the result for A. The timeout fallback also resolves that captured deferred and does not revalidate it. RemoteOpenTargets.resolveTargets and DesktopServerExposure.getAdvertisedEndpoints then consume the old names and can advertise a stale Tailscale host.

Re-read the address set after Deferred.await in discover. Retry the discovery when its key differs from the key used for the awaited result. The existing key check prevents stale publication to later cache hits, but it does not invalidate an existing waiter.

The process-free discovery addresses the reported prompt problem. One compatibility choice needs clarification under problem and scope: the previous passive path accepts any nonempty Self.DNSName, while the new resolver accepts only names ending in .ts.net; the description explicitly excludes custom control-server names. @praveenperera, can those names be preserved without starting the CLI? @juliusmarminge, if that is not feasible, is dropping their passive advertisement the intended scope? Leaving this open pending that decision.

@juliusmarminge Yes, custom control-server names can be kept without starting the CLI. Fixed in f39c488.

The .ts.net check was the only signal I had that a reverse-DNS name really came from the tailnet, since 100.64.0.0/10 is shared carrier address space. I've replaced it with a check on the interface: we only use a 100.x address if the same interface also has an address in Tailscale's IPv6 range, fd7a:115c:a1e0::/48. Headscale uses that range by default and documents ranges outside it as unsupported. When that check passes, we accept whatever name the reverse lookup returns, so custom domains work again.

One case is still not covered: a Headscale tailnet with IPv6 turned off. It falls back to the raw Tailscale IP and mDNS, and explicit pairing still works. The Compatibility section is updated.

I also simplified the service. Effect's Cache replaces the hand-rolled cache, and it returns a single MagicDNS name again, matching the old magicDnsName shape. Tested on a .ts.net tailnet on macOS; not tested against a live Headscale server.

Stop passive configuration reads from triggering repeated macOS data access prompts.

Discover local Tailscale names from network interfaces and the system resolver. Keep cached lookups independent from caller cancellation.
Identify Tailscale interfaces by their fd7a:115c:a1e0::/48
address instead of requiring *.ts.net names, so Headscale and
other custom control servers keep passive MagicDNS discovery
and carrier-grade NAT addresses are ignored.

Return a single MagicDNS name and use Effect's Cache in place
of the hand-rolled lookup cache.

Thanks for working on this. We merged the orchestrator V2 rewrite in #2829, and we are closing this PR as part of that transition.

The patch conflicts with the rewrite in apps/desktop/src/backend/tailscaleEndpointProvider.ts, apps/server/src/server.ts. Even where the conflict is small enough to rebase, we are asking for fresh PRs against the new base so we can review and verify the behavior in V2.

Sorry for the extra work this creates. If the change is still needed on V2, please rebuild it on current main, verify it there, and open a new PR linking back here. We're closing the current implementation without assuming the underlying request is resolved.
