The Project submenu of the thread filter lists project names only, while the thread list and the new-task picker show each project's favicon.

Android menu actions can now carry an optional leading view, which the Material popup draws in the icon slot instead of a symbol. When any row in a menu has one, rows without it keep an empty slot so labels stay aligned, as Material menus do. Both filter menus (phone home screen and tablet sidebar) pass the existing ProjectFavicon there at the popup's icon size, so loading, caching, icon overrides and the folder fallback match the thread list.

iOS menus are native UIKit menus, so the favicon has to arrive as a UIAction image. useProjectFilterMenuIcons (iOS only, a no-op elsewhere) resolves each project's favicon URL, fetches it to a data URI and passes it to the menu action as an imageSource; projects without a favicon get the folder.fill symbol. react-native-screens loads imageSource icons through the async image loader and UIKit builds the menu before that finishes, so remote images never showed. The repo's react-native-screens patch gains a sync decode branch for data: sources in RNSImageLoadingHelper.mm. The icon flows through the iOS 26 mail-style toolbar, the pre-26 header toolbar and the iPad sidebar header menu.

Each project filter option carries the scope's representative project, the same one the new-task picker uses.

Verification: mobile typecheck, lint and fmt on the changed files; home-list-filter-menu.test.ts passes. Android checked on a Pixel 8 emulator (Android 16) in light and dark mode. iOS checked on an iPhone 17 simulator (iOS 26.5, app 1.3.1) in light and dark mode against seeded projects with real favicons plus one without. The pre-26 toolbar and iPad sidebar share the same hook and were not exercised on a device.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This cross-platform mobile feature adds asynchronous favicon fetching, native image conversion, shared menu plumbing, and a patched iOS image loader across the existing thread-filter path. An unresolved medium-severity finding also indicates that emoji, monogram, and Lucide project overrides can be replaced by a generic folder icon.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Mobile project filter menus now carry representative project data and icons. Android menus render project favicons as leading content. On iOS, a hook loads eligible favicons as data URIs for menu icons.

Changes

Project menu icons

Layer / File(s) Summary
Android menu action contract and rendering
apps/mobile/src/components/MaterialMenuPopup.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/MaterialMenuPopup.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/components/AndroidAnchoredMenu.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/home/MaterialThreadListToolbar.tsx
AndroidMenuAction adds optional leading content and recursive Android-specific subactions. The menu renderer displays custom leading content at the control icon size and reserves an empty icon slot when another action has leading content. Menu props, submenu state, callbacks, and toolbar filter actions use the new type.
Project icon data and favicon resolution
apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-list-filter-menu.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/home/useProjectFilterMenuIcons*, apps/mobile/src/native/NativeHeaderToolbar.tsx, patches/react-native-screens@4.26.2.patch
Project menu entries accept representative project data and SF Symbol or image-source icons. On iOS, the hook loads eligible favicon URLs and returns image icons or a folder symbol. Native header toolbar icons accept image sources, and the patched image loader handles data URLs.
Home and thread filter menu integration
apps/mobile/src/features/home/HomeRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/home/HomeHeader*, apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-list-filter-menu.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadNavigationSidebar.tsx
Home and thread filter options include representative project data. Android project actions render a ProjectFavicon; the home menu builder uses resolved project icons. The test checks that only the configured project action receives its icon.

Merge Risk | 🔵 Low · up to f513d

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f513d

The menus remain usable, but some project icons may stay as folders after a temporary failure, and oversized icons may affect responsiveness. These bounded risks can be addressed before merge or accepted with follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f513d

The new iOS icon path can retain unrestricted image data and process it synchronously while constructing native menus. Large or repeatedly changing project icons could therefore affect the whole app’s responsiveness or memory use. Existing asset-access controls remain in place; no new privilege escalation or data disclosure was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new iOS menu path does not preserve favicon resource bounds. A remote URL returned after bounded-cache failure is fetched into a complete Blob and data URI, retained without eviction, and passed into synchronous native menu image processing. Oversized project files or repeated icon revisions could cause process-wide memory pressure or UI stalls. Exploitation requires influence over an eligible project’s icon content or its serving environment; effective server response limits remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is client-process availability: an icon associated with a displayed project can affect shared iOS memory and native menu construction. Influencing project icon files or the connected serving environment is the relevant prerequisite. No cross-tenant access, server privilege gain, or expanded infrastructure authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A large eligible favicon can fail bounded cache loading and leave its remote URL as the resolved value. The new menu hook then reads that response without a size cap, retains its data URI, and forwards it to synchronous native processing. This is an introduced failure-containment concern, not a verified exploit; practical HTTP limits and exact native thread guarantees remain unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Resource identity remains scoped by environment, workspace, and favicon path upstream. The hook reads the current URL when associating completed images with project entries, and menu selection still uses project keys. The asset endpoint retains signed-token, expiry, and canonical-path enforcement; icon bytes do not replace action authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The upstream cache caps cached data URIs at 32 KiB and trims to 128 entries or 1 MiB. The new menu store has no corresponding cap and is independent of upstream eviction. Even bounded successful icons can therefore accumulate across revisions for the module’s lifetime.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Restrict native menu icons to validated, bounded thumbnail data from the existing cache, falling back to the folder symbol when only a remote URL remains. Apply an aggregate byte and entry budget to any additional menu store and tie pending work to resource lifecycle. A native data-URI budget would provide defense in depth for other helper consumers.

Fixes reproduced on an Android emulator and from upstream reports.

Feed: Android stops drawing a text view past the GPU's maximum texture
height, so a long list rendered as one selectable Text lost its tail and
took seconds per frame to draw. Long lists now split into 40-item chunks.
Wide assistant markdown blocks keep a pinned width; the feed reserves
bottom padding.

Keyboard: the feed re-pins after keyboard transitions settle and when the
composer collapses; the back gesture collapses the composer; sticky
composers only follow the keyboard after a fresh show or real focus
(upstream pingdotgg#8212).

Terminal: hardware Enter no longer moves focus off the terminal; keyboards
that use deleteSurroundingText (FUTO) send Backspace; forward delete works.

Also: stream haptics no longer buzz every 320ms on Android and all haptics
use the system engine; thread settings apply on tap without Save; typed
pairing codes are normalized to the server format; non-git projects fall
back to the current checkout instead of a dead worktree default; user CA
certificates are trusted; Ctrl/Cmd+Enter sends from a hardware keyboard;
thread rename, project favicons in the filter, tablet sidebar toggle,
desktop-window density, route titles, Material You review colors, bottom
gesture-bar insets, and the composer placeholder clipping (upstream PRs

The Project submenu of the Android thread filter listed names only, while
the thread list and new-task picker show each project's favicon. Android
menu actions can now carry a leading view, and both filter menus (phone
home and tablet sidebar) pass the existing ProjectFavicon there, sized to
the menu's icon slot.

Projects with an emoji, monogram, or Lucide override display folder.fill in the iOS filter menu, so their identifying icon is lost. This guard discards the resolved glyph, and the final mapping only renders a fetched URI or FOLDER_ICON; render the override in the menu instead.

Bound the module-level favicon data-URI cache.

The backing cache limits each data URI to 32 KiB and trims itself to 128 entries or 1 MiB. The separate faviconDataUris map has no eviction. When a favicon revision changes, the hook can retain both the old and new data URIs indefinitely. Each new entry also copies the entire map.

Apply a bounded eviction policy to this module-level map. Match the existing favicon-cache entry and byte limits where practical.

Do not cache failed favicon loads as completed.

A failed fetch, HTTP response, or FileReader operation produces null. The current completion handler stores that null in faviconDataUris, and the effect then skips the same URL because getSnapshot().has(url) is true. The listener update can re-render the hook, but it does not change the effect dependency or schedule another load.

A connection recovery can leave the URL unchanged, so the folder icon can remain until the URL changes or the module state resets. This is a minor, recoverable fallback issue rather than a permanent failure. The upstream favicon cache may retain a confirmed missing-icon result, but that negative-cache behavior does not require this separate data-URI map to mark transient load failures as completed.

Suggested fix
     .catch(() => null)
     .then((dataUri) => {
       pendingFavicons.delete(url);
+      if (dataUri === null) return;
       faviconDataUris = new Map(faviconDataUris).set(url, dataUri);
       for (const listener of listeners) listener();
     });

This allows a later effect run to retry the URL. The change does not schedule a retry by itself.

Update loadFaviconDataUri so a null result removes the URL from pendingFavicons
but is not stored in faviconDataUris or announced to listeners; continue caching
and notifying for successful data URIs, allowing a later effect run to retry
failed loads.

Bound remote favicon responses before native decoding.

Do not add a data:image/...-only guard. createProjectFaviconCache.resolve can return a remote URL after a cache miss, and useProjectFilterMenuIcons.ios.ts must fetch that URL to preserve valid favicon fallback.

Extract or reuse the existing bounded response reader. Apply PROJECT_FAVICON_MAX_SOURCE_BYTES before response.blob() and FileReader.readAsDataURL. Pass only bounded data URIs to the synchronous native decoder. The nullable completion already handles decode failures.

Replace the unbounded URL read in the UIImage decoding path with the existing
bounded favicon response reader, enforcing PROJECT_FAVICON_MAX_SOURCE_BYTES
before blob conversion and FileReader.readAsDataURL. Preserve remote URL
fallback from createProjectFaviconCache.resolve, and pass only bounded data URIs
to the synchronous native decoder.
