What problem does this PR solve?

sync-diff-inspector can expose sensitive database values in SQL, query arguments, row data, chunk bounds, configuration, column metadata, and query errors. Operators need an option to hide these values in diagnostics.

Issue Number: close #12887

What is changed and how it works?

  • Add --redact-info-log and the top-level TOML setting redact-info-log, disabled by default. Explicit command-line values override the configuration file.
  • When enabled, replace sensitive diagnostic fields with ?. Cover configuration dumps, SQL and arguments, row values, checkpoint and splitter bounds, histogram and column metadata, and error messages in logs, terminal output, and reports.
  • Keep the new redaction helpers in sync-diff-inspector. Add an optional error-field formatter for bucket decoding in pkg/dbutil, preserving existing behavior for callers that omit it, and preserve upstream bucket parsing behavior while protecting its diagnostics.
  • Preserve database queries, comparison results, checkpoint contents, and generated fix SQL. Document the option in the README.

Check List

Tests

  • Unit test

Regression coverage checks redaction enabled and disabled, configuration loading, column metadata, query errors, malformed histogram bounds, normal and resumed timestamp decoding, parsing compatibility, and splitter diagnostic failpoints.

Validation passed:

tools/bin/failpoint-ctl enable sync_diff_inspector
go test -race -tags=intest -p 3 ./sync_diff_inspector/... ./pkg/dbutil ./pkg/diff
tools/bin/failpoint-ctl disable sync_diff_inspector
git diff --check

Repository formatting was applied with make fmt to the changed Go files.

Questions

Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?

The option defaults to false, preserving existing behavior. Enabling it masks sensitive diagnostic fields without changing database operations or data artifacts. Protected fields add a boolean check; no additional database queries are introduced, and no performance regression is expected.

Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?

Yes. The README documents the command-line and TOML settings, default behavior, precedence, and the distinction between redacted diagnostics and data artifacts.

Release note

Add the `redact-info-log` option to sync-diff-inspector to hide sensitive values in logs and error diagnostics.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional information-log redaction via --redact-info-log or redact-info-log = true; it is disabled by default, with command-line settings taking precedence.
    • When enabled, sensitive values in diagnostic logs and displayed errors are replaced with ?; queries, checkpoints, and generated fix SQL remain unchanged.
    • Added configurable redaction for bucket decode-error logs, including custom replacement fields.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on enabling log redaction and its scope.

Tema added 2 commits October 12, 2026 20:08
Add the redact-info-log CLI and TOML option and inspector-owned logging
helpers for errors, reflected values, stringers, and string slices.
Redact configuration, queries and arguments, row values, repair SQL,
chunk bounds, histogram bounds, and propagated query errors.

Count rows through a redaction-aware query path and protect query errors
shown in progress messages and reports. Preserve execution values and
original errors, with regression coverage for both redaction settings.
Protect configuration, column metadata, and bucket decoding logs when log redaction is enabled. Preserve parsing behavior and the default logging behavior of other bucket-info callers. Cover both redaction modes and splitter diagnostic failpoints, and document the new option.

Hi @Tema. Thanks for your PR.

I'm waiting for a pingcap member to verify that this patch is reasonable to test. If it is, they should reply with /ok-to-test on its own line. Until that is done, I will not automatically test new commits in this PR, but the usual testing commands by org members will still work.

Regular contributors should join the org to skip this step.

Once the patch is verified, the new status will be reflected by the ok-to-test label.

I understand the commands that are listed here.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds opt-in diagnostic log redaction through TOML and the command line. Redaction-aware fields cover configuration, SQL, arguments, row values, chunk bounds, bucket decoding, metadata, errors, and terminal output. Bucket analysis and row-count handling also change.

Changes: Diagnostic log redaction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Redaction configuration and helpers
sync_diff_inspector/config/*, sync_diff_inspector/main.go, sync_diff_inspector/logutil/*, sync_diff_inspector/README.md
The redact-info-log setting is available through TOML and the command line. It defaults to false, and explicit command-line values override the config file. Helpers emit ? when enabled.
Bucket decode and value handling
pkg/dbutil/buckets.go, pkg/dbutil/buckets_options_test.go, sync_diff_inspector/utils/buckets*, sync_diff_inspector/splitter/bucket*
GetBucketsInfo accepts a configurable decode-error field. Bucket splitting uses the new analyzer and redaction-aware diagnostics.
Splitter queries and chunk diagnostics
sync_diff_inspector/splitter/{random,limit}.go, sync_diff_inspector/splitter/*redaction_test.go
getRowCount constructs and executes a count query. Chunk and range logs use redaction-aware fields.
Comparison and query diagnostics
sync_diff_inspector/checkpoints/*, sync_diff_inspector/config/dm*, sync_diff_inspector/source/*, sync_diff_inspector/utils/utils*
Logs redact values, SQL, arguments, metadata, and errors. Tests check redacted output and preserved results.
Diff generation and fix SQL diagnostics
sync_diff_inspector/diff/*
Diff and global-checksum logs use redaction-aware fields for chunk data, search details, generated SQL, and errors.
Terminal and report error output
sync_diff_inspector/main.go, sync_diff_inspector/progress/*, sync_diff_inspector/report/*
Terminal, progress, and report errors use redacted text when enabled. Underlying errors remain available to program logic.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1f972

Initialization failures can expose sensitive configuration in terminal output despite redaction being enabled. Redact this error before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to af8fc

The reviewed changes reduce diagnostic exposure without expanding database privileges or changing checkpoint ownership. Some existing startup errors still bypass redaction, and checkpoints and generated fix SQL intentionally retain original values. No introduced or worsened security issue was established, but coverage is insufficient for a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed control affects disclosure to readers of the inspector's diagnostics. It does not protect the original data retained in checkpoint and fix-SQL files, so access to those files remains a separate confidentiality boundary.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Configuration-parse failures print raw errors before policy initialization. Logger and configuration initialization failures also emit raw errors without using redaction. These sinks exist at the PR base with the same exposure; no introduced or worsened attack path was established by this comparison.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Database-provided malformed bucket bounds can produce decode errors. The inspector's caller supplies a formatter that masks those errors when enabled, while retaining the original hexadecimal fallback bounds. The callback is supplied by application code, not by the bucket data.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Extend the policy to startup failure diagnostics, or explicitly document their exclusion, so operators do not treat opt-in redaction as a complete guarantee for captured terminal output. Continue treating checkpoints and generated fix SQL as sensitive files.

Move dmlog.SetRedactLog before the earliest log or output call.

dmlog.SetRedactLog(cfg.RedactInfoLog) runs after the template, version, and parse-error paths. Those paths do not emit redacted fields, so the order is acceptable now. Keep this call before any new diagnostic logging that uses the redact helpers.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Redact the remaining chunk-index diagnostics.

This change redacts chunk bounds, ranges, and SQL. Several nearby logs still emit zap.Any("chunk id", ...) or zap.Any("chunk index", ...). These log *chunk.CID, which holds only table, bucket, and chunk indices, not data values. They are not sensitive. The compareRows log at Line 790 also writes the table name with zap.String. Schema and table names are identifiers, not row data.

If the redaction policy covers only data values, no change is needed. If it also covers identifiers, redact those fields in the same way as the others. Confirm the intended policy.

The triage check reports that linked enhancement issue #12887 is missing a type label. Could a maintainer add type/feature to the issue? I attempted to add it, but GitHub denied this account permission to change the issue labels.

The checkpoint-error redaction fix and regression tests are now pushed in af8fc0a. The local race-enabled inspector, dbutil, and diff test suites passed, including the new checkpoint regression cases. The PR already has ok-to-test; requesting the triage check and CI jobs below.

The pull-error-log-review job reports that the changed error/fatal logging calls require approval from a repository log approver (bb7133 or nongfushanquan). Could one of the log approvers review these changes and provide the required approval?

The initial sync-diff integration and verification jobs were aborted before tests ran: the CI logs show offline workers and missing workspace volumes. Their reruns are pending.

Could we also redact configuration parsing errors when --redact-info-log is enabled? For example, an unquoted password (password=PrivatePasswordReviewMarker) causes the TOML parser error to include the full password, which is printed before SetRedactLog runs.

Fixed in 1f972a0.

Configuration parsing errors now honor --redact-info-log before they are printed, so the unquoted password in your example is replaced by ?. Explicit CLI true/false values also retain precedence if TOML decoding or validation fails. Added subprocess regression tests covering the actual stdout/stderr output, both flag orders, repeated flags, and redaction enabled/disabled. The README explains why the CLI flag is needed when the TOML file itself has a syntax error.

Validation passed:

go test -race -tags=intest ./sync_diff_inspector ./sync_diff_inspector/config

Apply the configured redaction policy before displaying parse errors and preserve explicit CLI overrides when TOML decoding or validation fails. Add subprocess regression coverage for the real startup output and document using the CLI flag for malformed TOML.
