I suppose this was tested on x86_64 Linux only (in general, this change may cause problems on different platforms).

What else should we consider and how should we address the tests?

we may commit into master and wait for bug reports :)

we may also enable this only for x86 and x86_64 Linux, but this way, we
most probably will never know the truth about other platforms.
