In discussing this valuable presentation with colleagues, some of the geography and cartography buffs mentioned issues with counts in choropleths. As the reference to Monmonier summarizes, choropleths are best for intensity measures. I've shared the code attached here with the choroplethr google group. We are starting to discuss how to implement this type of normalization into the package.
