Description
Pandas version checks
-
I have checked that this issue has not already been reported.
-
I have confirmed this bug exists on the latest version of pandas.
-
I have confirmed this bug exists on the main branch of pandas.
Reproducible Example
import pandas as pd
df = pd.DataFrame({"Age": [25, 35, 45, 55]})
df["Age_bins"] = pd.cut(df["Age"], [20, 30, 40, 50, 60])
display(df)
pd.read_json(df.to_json())
Issue Description
If I use pd.cut on a dataframe to create categories and then export and import it to and from json I get a dataframe that does not have a category column in it, but an object column with dictionaries.
#21892 reports a similar issue, but this use case is not fixed by the fix
Expected Behavior
I expect the result of the example code to contain a category column as in the first output of the above image.
