Third party repositories can contain patched packages other than the thing you intended to install that can overwrite your system packages and cause errors, degrade your security, etc.
Usually third-party repositories like PPAs are made for Ubuntu, not for elementary OS. Sometimes this works out okay and you can install and use the software normally, but other times…
