invalid config provided: invalid network "pasta" #1601

Description

@erik434

I tried updating FW on my router using owut download, using my self-hosted ASU server. However, the owut command fails with the error in the title.

ERROR: Build failed with status 500
The above errors are often due to the upgrade server lagging behind the
build server, first suggestion is to wait a while and try again.

I've tried debugging the problem myself, but I think my podman knowledge is lacking. I've been using the netavark network backend until now with no issues, but given the error here it appears that I have to use pasta now - is that right? Or do I just need to manually create a "pasta" network somehow?

More info that may help:

Apt shows this version of the passt package:
passt/oldstable,now 0.0~git20230309.7c7625d-1 amd64 [installed]

I'm running Debian 12 (bookworm) which may explain why some of these are rather old. I started down the path to updating to 13 (trixie), but ran into some unrelated issues I'd rather avoid solving unless it's really necessary. Any idea what's wrong and how I can get my server building again?

One last thought - I searched the repo for pasta and found a reference in build.py, calling podman.containers.create with network_mode="pasta". If this is the right documentation for that function, then pasta doesn't seem to be a valid choice there, since it claims the argument has to be one of:

        bridge
        none
        container:<name|id>
        host
        ns:<path>

Is pasta actually a valid option there? I assume this code works on the main ASU server, so it can't be completely wrong, but something doesn't seem right.

What's your host os? I've been running on Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 for some time without any issues.

My podman versions seem to be much newer than yours, maybe do uv sync --extra dev --active?

    $ podman-compose --version
    podman-compose version 1.5.0
    podman version 4.9.3

I'm running Debian 12, which is probably why everything is so old. I installed everything (podman/podman-compose/passt) using apt. Sounds like I need to look at alternatives that would let me use the latest instead of the old versions I'm stuck with.

I don't have uv installed. Is there a way to install podman using uv? Or just podman-compose?

Either way, if this is likely due to my outdated environment, that's on me. I'll figure that out and try this again.

Yeah, both podman and podman-compose versions are managed by uv (see the uv.lock file in the root of the repo). You probably need at least Python 3.11 for it to work, might be an issue on older Debian.

I'd say the easiest way to get newer "everything" is just run a VM, grabbing latest LTS image of Ubuntu, which is what I've been doing every time I set up a new server. I tried a couple other distros a few years back and they were always missing something (they needed apt/dnf install this-or-that), so I settled on Ubuntu as the most pain free way to go.

Could you please give this another spin? I removed all dependencies to pasta and moved to a better caching approach (optional). You need to create a new Rodman network though, podman network create asu-build

@aparcar thank you so much! I updated to the latest version, followed the new setup steps, and everything is working now!

One possible improvement, instead of external: true under the asu-build network in the compose file, I used name: asu-build. Gives the same result as far as I can tell, and that way you don't have to manually create the network beforehand - it's just managed by the compose stack.

Also worth noting, but maybe specific to my network setup (because my ISP only assigns me an IPv4 address, no IPv6 connectivity) - I was seeing intermittent failures in the server startup like this (and would need to manually restart the stack to have it try again):

I was also seeing many IPv6-related connection failures in the logs for the cache container once I enabled it, interspersed with successful GET requests (I assume the successes happened when it used an IPv4 address instead of IPv6). Excerpt from the logs:

I fixed both of these issues by adding these lines to every service in my compose file, which disables IPv6 inside the containers:

        sysctls:
          - net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1

Just figured I'd mention that here in case anyone else runs into similar failures when they only have IPv4 internet connectivity... not sure there's anything you can reasonably do about this in asu itself.

Actually, nevermind about that sysctls 'fix' - it looks like both issues are still happening even with IPv6 disabled. The second one doesn't seem to be a serious problem, just cluttering logs with failed IPv6 attempts; they eventually succeed (presumably using IPv4).

The first one is more of an issue since if it fails on startup, it doesn't seem to retry, so the server never starts properly and needs restarted to try again. Any ideas what might be going on here?

While troubleshooting, I found a different failure mode where there's a "Temporary failure in name resolution". I'd successfully started a FW build running, but while the router was polling for build completion, there was an error resolving redis:

I've only seen that happen once so far, so it could be a fluke, but does seem related to the first case since they're both failing to resolve hostnames (sometimes).

Edit: maybe related to podman-container-tools/podman#15972? If so, maybe I'm seeing this because I'm running older versions of podman/netavark. Either way, I was able to get my router FW updated, so that at least is done! Updating my server distro is still on my todo list.
