IHO Crowdsourced Bathymetry Trusted Node

I had a meeting yesterday with lovely folks from NOAA: Jennifer Henderson Jencks
(Director of the IHO Data Center for Digital Bathymetry) and Lee Shoemaker (Bathymetric Data Wrangler). They are very excited about the potential of receiving data from the SignalK community.

I am going through the process of becoming a "Trusted Node" to aggregate and share depth data gathered through this plugin. I have another meeting with them next week to review the data submissions.

Their preference is that we aggregate and vet the data from the community and send it to them in batches, instead of having individual vessels reporting. They have had individual vessels report in the past but had some challenges. So they would prefer to have a single point of contact. This will add significant overhead because we need to build an aggregation service, but I was thinking about doing that anyway (#5).

TODO:

• Reporter to submit to NOAA service
• Change heading to degrees instead of radians Correct sensor position, remove heading from reported data
• Update correctors.positionReferencePoint to Transducer in metadata
• Service to aggregate and vet data from the SignalK community (related to Open bathymetry aggregation service #5)

I have registered "Open Water Software, LLC" in the US and submitted the Trusted Node Agreement. I expect to hear back from that next week and should be able to start testing this plugin.

That would be great timing, we are soon heading to Guna Yala (San Blas islands), which might be interesting place for soundings.

If you’re not already, make sure you’re using the influxdb2 plugin. This plugin will backfill from that eventually.

I'm using influxdb1, actually. But we have the last four years of cruising there.

We don't know how long USA/NOAA will stay as a IHO member....

Sad but true. My understanding is that NOAA pretty much runs the crowd-sourced bathymetry program for IHO, so I'm not sure what will happen if NOAA is no longer an IHO member.

I'll gladly add support for other services if you know of any offices that directly accept data. In the mean time, I'll be storing all the data collected through this node and publshing it (#40). For example, here's the submission from my boat for yesteray.

There is also https://www.gebco.net/about-us/contributing-data anyway as far as I can see they are also NOAA related to some extent.
