Summary

  • keep entitlement grant cleanup inside the entitlement deletion transaction and serialize it with grant mutations by locking the entitlement before lifecycle hooks
  • acquire the owner lock before grant validation and re-read grants before voiding
  • keep opportunistic snapshot persistence inside the owner-lock transaction
  • prevent opportunistic balance calculations started before a grant or reset mutation from inserting stale snapshots afterward
  • advance the snapshot invalidation version atomically with snapshot invalidation

Testing

  • POSTGRES_HOST=127.0.0.1 go test -tags=dynamic ./openmeter/credit/... ./openmeter/entitlement/...
  • go vet -tags=dynamic ./openmeter/credit/... ./openmeter/entitlement/...
  • golangci-lint run ./openmeter/credit/... ./openmeter/entitlement/...
  • PostgreSQL-backed concurrent grant/snapshot regression repeated 5 times
  • PostgreSQL-backed concurrent deletion/grant regression repeated 5 times

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved consistency during grant creation, grant voiding, and entitlement deletion when operations occur concurrently.
    • Prevented balance calculations from saving outdated snapshots after concurrent grant changes.
    • Ensured snapshot invalidation updates and their version tracking succeed or roll back together.
    • Improved error handling when an entitlement is missing during locking.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues remain from this review.

Summary

This PR keeps grant cleanup and snapshot writes inside the transactions that lock their entitlement.

  • Balance calculations save snapshots only when their inputs have not been invalidated.
  • Grant changes and entitlement deletion now share the entitlement lock.

The earlier unnumbered stale-snapshot finding is addressed by the version check under the owner lock. No new actionable issues were found. Tests were inspected but not run during this review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add transaction locks to grant and entitlement operations. Balance snapshot invalidation now updates an entitlement version, which balance calculations check before saving snapshots. New tests cover invalidation atomicity, concurrent grants, and entitlement deletion rollback.

Changes

Credit and entitlement transaction consistency

Layer / File(s) Summary
Grant locking and revalidation
openmeter/credit/grant.go, openmeter/credit/adapter/grant.go
CreateGrant locks the owner before checking the usage period. VoidGrant reloads the grant and checks its state and usage period inside the transaction.
Snapshot invalidation and persistence
openmeter/ent/schema/entitlement.go, tools/migrate/migrations/*balance_snapshot_invalidation_version*, openmeter/credit/balance/*, openmeter/credit/adapter/balance_snapshot.go, openmeter/credit/balance.go, openmeter/credit/helper.go, openmeter/credit/adapter/balance_snapshot_test.go, openmeter/entitlement/metered/*
Entitlements store an invalidation version. Snapshot invalidation increments the version and updates snapshots transactionally. Balance calculations capture and check the version before saving. Tests cover transaction rollback and a concurrent grant during a usage query.
Entitlement locking and transactional cleanup
openmeter/entitlement/adapter/entitlement.go, openmeter/entitlement/service/{service.go,scheduling.go}, openmeter/credit/hook/entitlement_hook.go, openmeter/entitlement/service/grants_test.go
Deletion and superseding lock the entitlement before loading it. Grant cleanup runs in a transaction. Tests cover rollback when event publication fails and concurrent grant creation during deletion.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 6705a

The reset path still has a stale-snapshot race worth fixing, but the inspected changes do not introduce or worsen it. No new merge-blocking risk is established.

🟠 Major · Heads up: the reset path can still save a stale snapshot. · balance.go:329-346

openmeter/credit/balance.go:329-346
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Heads up: the reset path can still save a stale snapshot.

ResetUsageForOwner reads grants and runs the engine before it takes the owner lock (Lines 269-325). Here's how it can go wrong:

  1. A concurrent CreateGrant or VoidGrant commits in that window, with EffectiveAt or voidAt before at.
  2. The reset transaction runs its own InvalidateAfter. That deletes nothing useful, because the snapshot is not saved yet.
  3. The reset transaction then calls saveSnapshot with a res.Snapshot that does not include the concurrent grant change.
  4. saveSnapshot has no version check, so the stale snapshot becomes the valid base for later GetBalanceAt calls.

This breaks the PR goal of keeping calculations that started before a grant mutation from saving stale snapshots.

Two possible fixes:

  • Capture GetInvalidationVersion before the calculation. After LockOwnerForTx, compare it to the current version and fail or retry if it changed.
  • Or move the grant listing and engine run inside the locked transaction.

Update ResetUsageForOwner so grant listing and engine calculation cannot produce
a stale snapshot when a grant mutation commits before the reset acquires the
owner lock. Either perform those operations inside the locked transaction, or
capture the invalidation version before calculation and compare it after
LockOwnerForTx, aborting or retrying if it changed before saveSnapshot.
