Draft OGC GeoPose 1.1 Conceptual Model

Welcome to the OGC GeoPose 1.1 Conceptual Model specification GitHub Repo.

This repository is the responsibility of the GeoPose Standards Working Group (SWG), working under the auspices of the Open Geospatial Consortium. The purpose of this repository is to update the original OGC GeoPose 1.0 Data Exchange Standard for geographically-anchored pose (GeoPose) with 6 degrees of freedom referenced to one or more standardized Coordinate Reference Systems (CRSs).

This update to the GeoPose 1.0 standard describes the Conceptual and Logical models for seamlessly expressing, recording, and sharing the GeoPose of objects in an entirely consistent manner across different applications, users, devices, services, and platforms that adopt the standard or are able to translate/exchange the GeoPose into another CRS. It removes all requirements and conformance tests pertaining to encodings of GeoPose, and exposes underlying GeoPose components via new normative language as well as adding the corresponding requirements QUESTION HERE: I think we are not going to have conformance tests. If that’s so, then the next part of this sentence would need to be deleted and conformance tests.

As indicated by keeping the first number of the standard constant (v 1.0 and v 1.1), the standard defined in this repository will be fully backward compatible so any investment based on v 1.0 will not be lost. One benefit of v1.1 will be that other standards can reference one or more GeoPose components normatively.

This repository holds the latest UPDATE ACTION NEEDED: Link from this text to the actual draft when that is generated using Metanorma Editor’s Draft of the GeoPose 1.1 CM specification and reflects the current agreement of members of the GeoPose SWG.

As of January 5, 2026 there remain several edits to be made to the draft, namely, updating the informative sections (such as the Clause 0 Abstract, Clause 1 Scope, Clause 2 Conformance, and perhaps Clause 6 Informative Text) and removing any unnecessary language. It may be valuable to add examples of how to use the GeoPose components exposed in the GeoPose 1.1 CM.

Once these and other modifications have been made by the editors, the SWG will perform a final review of the entire document for consistency and clarity. The GeoPose SWG anticipates completing these edits by January 29, 2026, at which time the draft will move to public review, the next stage of the OGC Standards Development Process. The public review period will close on or before March 5, 2026 (the end of the March 2026 OGC member meeting).

The GeoPose SWG will consider all comments received and prepare a final draft for submission to the OGC Technical Committee for approval as an OGC Standard.

Draft OGC GeoPose 1.1 JSON Encoding Standard

In June 2022, the OGC Technical Committee approved the OGC GeoPose 1.0 Data Exchange Standard as an OGC Specification that included both the Conceptual Model and a JSON encoding. The JSON encoding of the GeoPose CM is being finalized in a separate GitHub repository and will be published as a new OGC Implementation Standard.

Contributing

The OGC GeoPose SWG is the group at OGC responsible for the stewardship of the standard. The separation of the Conceptual Model, the exposure of GeoPose components and removal of the JSON encoding specification is the scope of Work Packages 1 and 2 as defined in this document and invitation for contributors.

If you have input, comments or feedback for the SWG’s consideration, please begin by reviewing the open issues. If there is already an issue with your question, concern or input, please respond or discuss it in the issue. If your input, feedback or question is new (not captured in a prior issue), please open a new issue.

The GeoPose SWG will promptly review open issues and address or reply to new issues in a timely manner.

If necessary, make a branch from the "working" branch of this repo. Make any changes to your own branch of "working" Pull Requests from contributors may only be made on the "working" branch. Please note that by sending a Pull Request or Commit to this GitHub repository, you are agreeing to the terms in the [OGC GeoPose SWG Observer Agreement].

The contributor understands that any contributions, if accepted by the OGC GeoPose SWG, shall be incorporated into a final OGC standards document and that all copyright and intellectual property shall be vested to the OGC. See the OGC License Language.
