Problem

• As part of the Open Prices tests, one developper organized a workshop with elderly people.
• He got them on Open Prices, but Open Prices required creating an Open Food Facts account.
• They went on the mobile Open Food Facts website, where they were welcomed by huge banners promoting the app
• As a result, they downloaded the app
• They were welcomed by an onboarding they swiped through
• It was hard for them to spot that account creation was nested on the bottom left in the settings, and then to proceed to actual account creation.
• Then they tried getting the username michu, but they knew it was unavailable only after they hit validate.

Potential solutions

• Provide live checks of username availability (with a rate limiting ?)
• Provide automatic available username suggestions (like VoraciousVeloriraptor22) for inspiration, with the ability to pick your own custom one (that's a technique used by many websites accross the web.
• Integrate an optional signup / login check after the onboarding, or in the home page
