MCP with context

Question

I've noticed in invoke_mcp_tool that while we pass the runner context, it isn't used to invoke the server tool.
Is that intentional? Would it be possible to pass the runner context to the server?

The use case is to pass user information/authentication through the contect.

I have a related question, is it possible to access context information within an @mcp.tool() function, just like with @function_tool?

It is intentional - the MCP server has no concept of context, and the interface for MCP's call_tool method has no way to pass a context object. In addition, context isn't necessarily serializable, so there's no good way to pass it to the server.

You could pass the data to the server yourself though. You could pass it during initialization (e.g. via the command args to the stdio server, or via URL params to the sse server).

Looks like there's an on-going discussion on this topic in the MCP specification repository.
I guess we'll have to wait and see their direction.
