Semantic conventions SIG is moving over to the new tooling - Weaver.
Weaver provides extensible code generation capabilities and is being actively developed with intention to evolve telemetry schema beyond semantic conventions. Check out the vision and roadmap OTEP.
What does it mean?
We don't plan to release new versions of build-tools (otel/semconvgen image). New features should be implemented in weaver.
Semantic-conventions is replacing build-tools with weaver: markdown code generation done with weaver already and build-tools are used for backward compatibility checks only.
Some of the Semantic Conventions Libraries are still generated using build-tools, library owners are encouraged to start using weaver. Please refer to Semantic Conventions Code Generation docs for migration details.
Once semantic-conventions and a few languages SIGs are fully migrated to weaver for markdown and code generation, and we have all the documentation in place, yaml schema may start evolving in ways not compatible with build-tools.
Remaining language SIGs at this point will have to migrate to weaver-based code generation to support future versions of semantic conventions.
