finding(app-shell/ConditionBuilder): the hook condition editor lints at scope record but its autocomplete still advertises os / current_user / vars - roots the server never binds, so the suggestion lints green and the runtime throws #9645

Description

@os-justin

Dedup keywords: hook condition autocomplete · unbound scope roots · introspectCelScope · HookConditionError · ROW_PREDICATE_ROOTS

Surfaced by the os-dev seat delivering objectui#8167 (PR objectui#9643); filed by the domain:ui execution seat after re-reading it against the three filing classes. ⛔ Unassigned, ungraded, and ⛔ no domain:* applied — routing is the triage seat's.

The trap

The hook condition editor now lints at scope record (objectui#8167, ruled). Its autocomplete still advertises the engine's whole default root list.

Measured on the installed @objectstack/formula:

introspectScope(scope 'record').roots
-> ["record", "previous", "input", "os", "current_user", "user", "vars"]

ConditionBuilder passes no roots override, so that whole list is what the mount offers an author.

The server binds only two of them. From objectstack origin/main, packages/objectql/src/hook-wrappers.ts:

const r = ExpressionEngine.evaluate<boolean>(expr, { record: record ?? {}, previous });

and an unevaluable condition throws HookConditionError two lines later — fail-loud, by objectstack#4775.

⇒ the editor offers os.user.id / current_user.x / vars.x; the lint stays green, because @objectstack/formula's SCOPE_ROOTS accepts them at that scope; and the authored condition is then rejected at runtime.

Why this is class (c) and not a style nit

「AI 写元数据会被运行时拒收或静默丢弃的陷阱」 — this is the rejected half, and it is reached by following the editor's own suggestion. The author is not guessing: the surface proposes a root, validates it clean, stores it, and the runtime refuses it.

⚠️ Note the boundary this does not cross: it is not the 「warning that steers an author toward metadata the runtime honours but makes things worse」 case that the class deliberately excludes. Here the runtime honours nothing — it throws.

The repo has already solved this once, on the sibling surface

ConditionalFormattingEditor pins a truthful ROW_PREDICATE_ROOTS list for its own surface, and its docblock states the hazard in as many words:

Suggesting an unbound root would author a condition that silently never matches

⇒ the fix shape exists in-tree and has a precedent; what is missing is the same treatment on the hook mount's roots forwarding.

⛔ Why objectui#8167 did not fix it

Out of that card's surface, and the distinction is clean: objectui#8167 is about which SCOPE a mount lints in; this is about which ROOTS it advertises. Folding it in would have widened a ruled card past its ruling.

⚠️ Related but deliberately separate, recorded by the same dev on objectui#8167 and ⛔ not part of this card: the page-block mount does not pass slot="visibleWhen" even though visibleWhen is in celAuthoring's FIELD_RULE_VERDICT_SLOTS, because routing it there would apply the field-rule bound roots [record, previous, parent] to a tier that binds record / current_user / page — neither a subset nor a superset. celAuthoring's own docblock warns against exactly that edit. Anyone widening FIELD_RULE_VERDICT_SLOTS should read both.

Provenance

objectui#8167 dev report and the seat's review 5701420303. The measurements above were taken by the dev against the installed package and objectstack origin/main; ⛔ this seat re-derived the SchemaRenderer binding half but has not independently re-run the introspectScope reading — treat that one as the dev's measurement, dated, not as a seat reading.

⛔ This seat did not run a dedup query for this card. Dedup words are at the top.

    Session: session_01Xm4WFhEe5mwcgyqHjxR2hn
    Branch: claude/issue-9645-condition-builder-roots-override
    Worktree: objectui-issue-9645
    Domain: domain:ui
    Seat: domain:ui#3 (seat post objectui#9800)
File surface: packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/inspectors/ConditionBuilder.tsx plus its sibling test files in that same directory, and one .changeset/ entry (stop on breach; explain in the report)
Container & model: M, mode:subagent, model: default judgment tier
    Clause-②: no
    Thread-read: 5714791449
Serial constraints cleared: no open PR and no in-flight domain:ui card declares metadata-admin/inspectors/ConditionBuilder.tsx. The 13 dispatched cards in this lane at claim time are seat 2's #9839 (packages/core) and #7181 (packages/cli + vscode templates, PR objectui#9846), seat 1's #9570 #9533 #9464 #8114 #8078 #8072 #7945, and this seat's own #9568 #9594 #9542 #9507 — all four delivered and awaiting landing. ⚠️ Seat 1's #9464 (Studio Delegated Admin Scope editor) is the nearest neighbour and is also under metadata-admin, but on the admin-scope editor rather than this file; seat 1 declares no File surface: line, so that is inferred from its branch name and PR file list, not from a declaration. ⇒ if the dev finds #9464's work touching ConditionBuilder.tsx, that is a real collision and a stop-and-report.

    Premise re-verified on origin/main = e7084269, ⛔ not taken from the card

    • packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/inspectors/ConditionBuilder.tsx:419 forwards scope={scope} and no roots ⇒ the mount takes the engine's default root list for that scope. Premise confirmed.
    • The in-tree precedent is real: ROW_PREDICATE_ROOTS is declared at packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/ConditionalFormattingEditor.tsx:97, and its sibling test asserts expect(ROW_PREDICATE_ROOTS).not.toContain('app') — a pin that goes red if the list regains an unbound root.

Timeline read for an already-merged delivery: no cross-referenced PR at all.

⚠️ A conflation hazard this seat found while verifying, which the card does not name. ConditionBuilder.tsx ALREADY carries a roots concept of its own at :104-130 — 「Scope roots a value typed into the value box may plainly REFERENCE」 — with its own commentary about app being 「a root at ... produce another silently-false predicate instead of a loud one」. That list serves the value box, not the CEL editor's autocomplete. ⇒ these are two different populations in one file and ⛔ they must not be merged into one list on the assumption that they are the same thing. Named in the dispatch as a mechanism assumption.

    Clause-② no

Narrowing which roots the autocomplete advertises removes suggestions; it accepts strictly less and publishes no new symbol. The server's binding is untouched, so no runtime permission or security behaviour moves either — this is the negative boundary, not clause ②. ⚠️ Reviewer's hook: if the delivered diff widens what the editor accepts, or exports a new symbol from a published entry point, this no is void.

Write `record.org`'), so reusing the value-box list as the advertised list would have re-created the objectui#8155 `app` failure one component over. ROW_PREDICATE_ROOTS is the single-surface shape; but ObjectFieldInspector, in the same directory as the target file, already passes roots={FIELD_RULE_ROOTS} / roots={FORMULA_ROOTS} straight to CelPredicateField beside scope='record'. That is the mechanism this change reuses rather than parallel-inventing. Where it necessarily differs: those are single surfaces declaring their own binding, while ConditionBuilder is a shared component with six mounts whose hosts differ, so the treatment is a default PLUS a caller-supplied prop. On Zone 3's preference for an invariant over a snapshot: the suite's derived cases compare the advertised list against introspectCelScope's own live answer (the extras it drops are computed, not retyped) and assert every advertised root lints clean at record scope, and the primary pins are behavioural at the real hook mount rather than assertions about an array."

Measured, it does not transfer unchanged: app-shell's buildExpressionScope binds current_user / user / ctx / os / features to the CLIENT evaluator while the hook wrapper binds record / previous, so no single hardcoded list is truthful at every mount. Hence default + prop. Clause-② no — verified, with a lit control

This diff turns two constants into exports (REFERENCE_ROOTS, and the new RECORD_CONDITION_ROOTS), which is the one thing that could have voided the declaration. It does not reach a published face. Measured on origin/main: packages/app-shell's exports map carries exactly one entry, "." → dist/index.js; src/index.ts (470 lines, 84 export lines — the lit control, so the absence below is real) re-exports neither symbol, and its only mention of inspectors is a comment recording that objectui#6776 deliberately moved them out of the barrel. The sole in-repo importer of ConditionBuilder is a sibling panel. ⇒ both symbols stay package-internal and @object-ui/app-shell's published face is unchanged.

The hazard this seat fenced — answered by measurement, not by assurance

The dispatch's Zone 2 item 1 warned that this file already carries a different roots population (REFERENCE_ROOTS, for the value box) and that merging it with the autocomplete list would be the obvious wrong move. The dev proved them non-coincident rather than asserting it: REFERENCE_ROOTS carries org and parent, and introspectScope('record') advertises neither — and measured on the installed engine, org.id == 'o1' is a hard lint ERROR at record scope with the nonsense remedy 「Write record.org」. ⇒ reusing the value-box list as the advertised list would have re-created the objectui#8155 app failure one component over. Both lists now carry a docblock naming the question each answers, and a case in the new suite — derived from the engine rather than copied from either list — reddens if anyone merges them.

Two things reasoned out that the dispatch did not specify

    • Why the list cannot be derived per mount. Nothing a mount passes distinguishes a SERVER-evaluated condition from a CLIENT-evaluated visible, and their hosts bind different sets — app-shell's buildExpressionScope publishes current_user / user / ctx / os / features to the client evaluator, while objectstack's hook wrapper binds { record, previous }. So no single hardcoded list is truthful at every mount; hence a default plus a caller-supplied roots prop.
    • The asymmetry that picks the default's direction. roots feeds autocomplete only — the accept set stays the engine's SCOPE_ROOTS. Over-advertising on a server mount costs the author the write (a throw); under-advertising costs a client mount an offer, never a spelling. Narrowing is therefore the safe direction, and the safe direction is the default.

It also found a closer precedent than the one this seat named: ObjectFieldInspector, in the same directory, already passes roots={FIELD_RULE_ROOTS} / {FORMULA_ROOTS} to CelPredicateField beside scope='record' — the mechanism reused rather than parallel-invented.

The ablation, and an honest statement of what it does not prove

Mutating roots={roots ?? (scope === 'record' ? RECORD_CONDITION_ROOTS : undefined)} → roots={roots} turns the suite red: exit 1, 5 failures, all DOM-absence cases at the real HookDefaultInspector mount (a hook condition no longer offering os / current_user / user / vars / input). Mutation and restore both proven by blob hash, git diff HEAD empty afterwards. ⭐ And the report says plainly that only those 5 flip — the derived pins and the two controls read the advertised list and the engine rather than the forwarding, so they stay green under this ablation and fence a different drift. Stating what an ablation does not cover is the part usually left out.

⭐ An error of MINE the dev surfaced rather than silently absorbing

The dev reports: 「NO LABEL WRITE. The standing os-dev clause says to label the PR as soon as it opens; this dispatch says no label writes … I followed the dispatch and am naming the conflict rather than choosing silently.」 That was the right call, and the conflict is mine.

.claude/agents/os-dev.md budgets four writes including POST /issues/{n}/labels, and states 「本仓库:标签是真实机制,打标签是你的步骤、不是 CI 的,PR 一开出就打」. My dispatch briefs wrote a blanket 「⛔ No label writes」. ⚠️ Read closely, that line's 「本仓库」 is objectstack, where the file lives, and the file carves objectui out separately two lines later — so the instruction was not flatly wrong. But my own protocol says 「无条件条款只住角色文件,冲突时它胜、错了修那里,⛔ 不靠派发词临时覆盖」: a role-file clause is not something a dispatch brief narrows on the fly. If objectui genuinely needs no dev label write, that belongs in os-dev.md, not in four of my briefs.

The substantive question is real and now measured four times over: this PR carries tests and package: app-shell, applied by objectui's own labeler.yml, with the dev writing no label at all — the same observation three devs have now made independently. Filed for the skills lane rather than settled here.

    Out-of-scope findings

Two are to file and this seat is filing both — ⭐ the first matters because it means this card does not fully close its own trap:

    • The same file's CONTEXT_SUBJECTS offers org.id as a row SUBJECT at every mount, and record scope hard-errors on it with the nonsense remedy record.org; it also offers user.*, which no server-evaluated mount binds. ⇒ the hook trap this card closes in the autocomplete is still reachable through the subject dropdown. Correctly not folded in: repairing it changes what the row builder emits, a different control and a different blast radius.
    • Client-evaluated mounts (an action's visible / disabled) now lose the os / user / current_user offers their host really binds until each declares roots — one line per mount, and the escape hatch is pinned by a case in the new suite rather than promised.

The two noted, not filed are correctly not filed: the two react-refresh/only-export-components warnings are byte-identical to the pair ConditionalFormattingEditor.tsx already carries for ROW_PREDICATE_ROOTS and the repo sets no --max-warnings; and check:test-path-roots printing 418 unclassified roots is that gate's own stated blind spot with nothing here depending on it.

    Landing

Path surface clean ⇒ ordinary ready → merge queue once every check is green or an expected skip. ⛔ Not flipped while 8 checks are in_progress. ⚠️ The auto-merge refusal recorded on PR objectui#9804 applies identically.
