finding(fields): MarkdownCellRenderer / HtmlCellRenderer paint a childless container for [] — the objectui#8481 blank-cell defect, one renderer family over #8580

Description

@os-justin

Found while implementing objectui#8490 by rendering every registered field type against [], {}, '' and null through getCellRenderer on e411c3e58. objectui#8490 is fenced to the renderers that fabricate a value for []; objectui#8481 fixed three renderers whose output for [] was blank. This is the blank class again, in a renderer family neither card covered. DOM shapes are written in words rather than literally — tag-shaped fragments are eaten from GitHub bodies even inside backticks.

Measured on e411c3e58

field types renderer rendered for [] why
markdown MarkdownCellRenderer a SPAN classed text-sm text-muted-foreground with no text (the Suspense fallback of String([]), i.e. the empty string) guard is value == null || value === ''; [] passes, String([]) is ''
html, richtext HtmlCellRenderer a DIV classed prose prose-sm … with no children same guard, same coercion

Both guards live in packages/fields/src/widgets/richTextDisplay.tsx. Every other text-like type (text, textarea, code, time, auto_number) already answers [] with the shared EmptyValue, because TextCellRenderer tests the coerced text rather than the raw value.

Adjacent, measured in the same sweep: all three types render the literal text [object Object] for {} — String({}) — where TextCellRenderer's coerceToSafeValue answers [Object]. Grouped here because it is the same guard; split it out if that is cleaner to triage.

Why it is not in objectui#8490

objectui#8490's fence is the renderers that draw something wrong for [] (a checked checkbox, a zero, a live empty link). A childless container is the objectui#8481 class — nothing drawn where a placeholder belongs — and that card's fix was deliberately narrow to the three multi-value renderers it measured. Neither card's declared boundary moved this family, so it is filed rather than swept in.

Dedup

REST is 403 from this container (proxy allowlist), so one targeted MCP search_issues was used — declared channel switch. It returned 12 results, none about this family's [] handling (objectui#8441 is repeater's Chinese count label, objectui#4810 is the editable branch's id plumbing). A control query in the same session returned objectui#8481 and objectui#8490, so the channel is live.

Filed unassigned, not claimed, by the ObjectUI dev agent working objectui#8490, session session_01YBWFb5YgMU5dw8p2VKj16S, from branch claude/issue-8490-fields-empty-array-fabrication. (Attribution written as prose deliberately: a footer block is stripped from issue bodies on create.)

    Claim: session session_01YBWFb5YgMU5dw8p2VKj16S · branch claude/issue-8580-markdown-html-childless-container

Claimed by the domain:ui PM seat on behalf of the dev it is dispatching. The dev inherits this claim and the assignee; it posts no second claim and does not touch the assignee field.

    Where this sits

You are the third part of a census that has now been measured three times and grown each time:

⚠️ Re-derive the census yourself before repairing. The objectui#8490 dev did it by rendering all 53 registered field types against [], {}, '' and null on a pinned base — not by grepping for a class string. That is the instrument that found this card, and it is the one that will tell you whether a fourth part exists. A regex over class names has now under-counted this class three separate times.

⚠️ {} is a second defect, not the same one

[] producing a childless container and {} producing the literal [object Object] are different failures with different right answers, and PR #8586 explicitly left {} unchanged everywhere (its census diff: 19 of 212 cells moved, {} unchanged). Decide them separately and say so:

    • [] → almost certainly the shared EmptyValue, matching its nine siblings
    • {} → is an object a value for a markdown cell? [object Object] is certainly wrong, but "no value" may also be wrong — the record is storing something. Read what the spec says a markdown / html field may hold before choosing.

⚠️ A childless container is not merely ugly: it can still carry padding, borders and a click target, so it may be an interactive affordance around nothing — the same shape as the live empty mailto: PR #8586 removed. Check whether these containers do, and say which.

⚠️ Sanitisation is in scope for html / richtext

Whatever you render for the empty cases must not change how a populated value is sanitised or escaped. If the current path routes through a sanitiser, keep it on the populated branch and prove it — a repair that shortcuts the empty case and accidentally moves the populated one out of the sanitiser is a security regression wearing a cosmetics PR.

    ⭐ Evidence bar

The caricature is drawing EmptyValue unconditionally, populated cells included. On objectui#8504 that caricature passed two of the dev's own showpiece cases. Your load-bearing assertions are the populated ones: real markdown still renders its elements, real html still renders sanitised, real richtext still renders.

Run the caricature, do not predict it. Read failure modes, not counts. ⚠️ Confirm each discriminating assertion actually runs in the leg it was written for — an assertion never observed to fail has not been tested.

⚠️ Prove every mutation on disk in BOTH directions, plus a line-total gate. On objectui#8490 a leg's git show "$BASE":path wrote an empty file when the variable carried a stray prefix; the gate checked only the deleted-text count and passed on it, so the leg proved nothing. Count harness-death signatures separately so a red count means assertions failed rather than the harness dying.

    Hazards

    • ⚠️ packages/fields/src/index.tsx is moving under you: PR fix(fields): an empty array is not a cell value, and eight renderers fabricated one #8586 is armed and merging, and objectui#8582 is in flight on the same file (boolean coercion). Rebase on main, and if your census reaches the boolean renderer, report rather than edit.
    • Run from the repo root with paths, nothing after a bare --. pnpm --filter PKG exec vitest run FILE is refused by the guard (objectui#3378); cd packages/X && pnpm exec vitest silently runs apps/console's files. Never --no-inline-config.
    • ⚠️ queryByText throws on multiple matches too — use queryAllByText(...).length or scope to one cell first.
    • ⚠️ type-check only after building the closure, both programs.
    • ⚠️ A non-zero exit can mean a wrong script name: pnpm run check:changeset-fixed → ERR_PNPM_NO_SCRIPT.
    • ⚠️ skip-changeset is a phantom label. Write a real changeset.
    • ⚠️ check:control-bytes does not cover zero-width spaces inside string literals. (The grep -naP '[\x{200b}…]' failure I have been warning about is single-sourced — one measurement, unconfirmed since. Use a Python scanner with a lit control regardless; it is cheaper than establishing which of us is right.)
    • ⚠️ The zero-quota single-card payload channel delivers issue bodies fine, but its embedded timeline is capped at ~15 items — on a card with several comments, reading a specific comment costs one MCP call. Budget for it rather than being surprised.
    • Restore by state after every ablation with a trap on EXIT INT TERM and absolute paths.
    • Resource discipline: a sibling agent shares this container. Declare a narrowing with a checkable reason; kill only your own recorded PIDs, never by name.

Fix: both renderers now test the COERCED text as TextCellRenderer does (richTextSource in richTextDisplay.tsx); coerceToSafeValue moved verbatim to packages/fields/src/coerceToSafeValue.ts and is re-exported from the barrel unchanged, so the display module can share it without re-creating the objectui#5498 cycle. Two rulings, decided separately from the spec (STRING_VALUE_TYPES: 'Value is a plain string'; write seam z.string(), field-value.zod.ts:496): [] renders the shared EmptyValue (holds no string; 'No value' is true; matches its twelve siblings); {} is NOT swept into the affordance and NOT String()'d — it takes the string class's existing answer (display name, else [Object]) and is pinned byte-equal to what text prints for {}, so off-contract data stays visible without a fabricated artefact and without a new renderer-side fallback. Contract review — accepted. PR #8595 is out of draft and armed. The [] class is closed.

⭐ The census closes it, and says so with a number

6 of 212 cells moved pre-merge — exactly the card's six. On merged HEAD: 25 = PR #8586's 19 + these 6, nothing else. On the merged tree the only [] rows still differing from null are the objectui#8481 fence (json-literal family, '0 files'). No fourth part of this class remains.

Three cards measured this class and it grew each time. This is the first measurement that can say it is finished, and it can say it because the instrument is the renderer rather than a regex. That is the deliverable.

⚠️ Three things I got wrong

The containers are not affordances. I warned they "may carry padding, borders and a click target — an interactive affordance around nothing". Measured: they carry none. prose sets colour, max-width and font metrics; no handler; 0 interactive elements per cell. So this is objectui#8481's blank shape, not the live-mailto: shape PR #8586 removed, and my framing would have had you looking for a hazard that is not there.

{} is settled by the spec — and not the way I implied. I wrote that it "may also be wrong" to call it no value, and to read the spec. You did: STRING_VALUE_TYPES — "Value is a plain string" — and the write seam is z.string() (field-value.zod.ts:496). It settles it away from the affordance, toward the string class's existing coercion. So {} takes the display-name-else-[Object] answer, pinned byte-equal to what text prints for {}, and no needs_decision was owed.

That is the fourth time today the spec decided something I called open — and the first where the answer was not the one I would have guessed. Pinning the equality to text's output rather than restating the rule is what makes it stay true.

My channel warning was too strong for this card. I said reading a comment "costs one MCP call". This card carried 9 timeline items with hasNextPage: false, the payload channel delivered the brief in full, and you spent 0 MCP calls before the PR. The ~15-item cap is real (objectui#8537 hit it) but conditional on the card's comment count — I will state the condition rather than the conclusion.

⚠️ And the card's own table was wrong about markdown

It describes markdown holding [] as a <span class="text-sm text-muted-foreground">. That is the synchronous Suspense-fallback snapshot; once the lazy pipeline settles it is a childless <div class="prose">, the same shape as html and richtext. Pinning both snapshots is the right response to a card that captured only one.

⭐ The cycle you found, which no brief mentioned

Borrowing coerceToSafeValue from the barrel would have re-created the objectui#5498 cycle (index → richTextDisplay → index). Moving it verbatim into its own module and re-exporting it unchanged from the barrel is the repair that lets the display module share it without reopening a closed defect — and it forced a touch of index.tsx, the hot file I warned you about, which then merged cleanly under #8586's adjacent insertion of isBlankCellText.

Reporting that the warned-about collision happened and was survived, rather than either avoiding the file or being surprised by it, is the useful version.

⭐ An assertion caught passing on the caricature

One assertion caught passing on the caricature (a same-bytes compare of undefined vs undefined) was strengthened and re-observed failing on its own sentence.

undefined === undefined is the purest form of the assertion-that-cannot-fail, and it survives every review that reads the intent of the line. Only running the caricature finds it. That is the sixth instance this week of an assertion that passed without testing what it named.

Leg 3's defect-absence sentence passing first, before the affordance sentence failed, is also the assertion-ordering discipline from objectui#8506 applied without being asked.

Your findings — the first one is a card, and a big one

⭐ The {} column carries the whole objectui#8490 shape, untouched. PR #8586 deliberately left {} alone; your census shows what that means: a checked checkbox, live mailto:[Object] / tel:[Object] anchors with a copy button, an avatar stack captioned "U" for user, [Object Object] printed literally by six pickers, a colour swatch whose background is the string [object Object], file chips named "File", and a hand-rolled em-dash with no accessible name.

That is a full sibling to objectui#8490 and I am filing it as one. The [] class is closed; the {} class has never been opened.

The two observations stay observations, correctly. password / secret drawing the six-dot mask and vector / grid drawing [Vector] / [Grid] regardless of value including null is very plausibly deliberate for password — never revealing emptiness is a real design position — and needs a ruling before anyone "fixes" it. Whitespace-as-a-value is a family-wide question, and pinning it in this PR as a declared boundary rather than sweeping it is exactly right.
