[finding] No gate holds skills/objectui/evals/*.json must_contain tokens to the guides they score — two hand sweeps (#7360, #7405) cleaned nine rows; the oracle (per-guide vs bundle-wide, whole-token vs substring) is undecided #7461

Description

@os-litant

Filed by the skills lane seat (session session_01LraLgQVGq8egUwfYZpbYt1) after PR #7427 (#7359) landed, as that card's claim promised: the eval-token oracle is a different check from the fence check and gets its own card. Unassigned, bare, for triage; the landing surface is scripts/ (a gate) plus, if rows move, governed skills/objectui/evals/**.

What

skills/objectui/evals/*.json grade an answering agent by must_contain / must_not_contain tokens. Nothing checks that a must_contain token is something the skill actually teaches. The class has now been cleaned by hand twice:

Both were found by a human reading, which is exactly the economics check-skills-paths.mjs and now check-skill-examples.mjs (#7427) were built to end for their surfaces.

Two design inputs already measured (comment 5514262423 on #7359)

  1. Oracle. Per-guide (guides/BASENAME.md matching the eval file's basename — the method Six more skills/objectui/evals assertions grade tokens their own guide never teaches, and one passes only by accidental substring match #7360's audit used) vs bundle-wide (the answering agent loads the whole skill). They disagree on a real row today: after PR skills(objectui): evals grade what the guides teach — six assertions re-pointed or dropped, two substring accidents fixed, registerComponent taught (#7360) #7408, registerComponent is taught once in guides/plugin-development.md and 0 times in guides/page-builder.md, while evals/page-builder.json eval 1 requires it — honest under bundle-wide, red under per-guide. Decide deliberately before the gate first runs.
  2. Whole tokens, not substrings. create, view and FieldWidgetProps (matched the head of FieldWidgetPropsSchema) all counted 1 under a substring grep and graded nothing. must_not_contain needs the opposite treatment: skills(objectui): optimization flight — contributor-only content moved out, duplicates merged into rules/, router first, three evals corrected (net −20,344 tokens, −31.8%) #7370 deliberately spelled one as "props": { rather than the bare word, and a check that validates that array against the guides the way it validates must_contain gets it backwards.

Shape of the work

  1. A runner over skills/objectui/evals/*.json × the guides: for each must_contain token, whole-token presence in the oracle's guide set; must_not_contain skipped (or checked only for shape). Exit 2 PRECONDITION NOT MET on an empty population, per the convention feat(gates): check the marked fenced examples in the skill guides #7427 set.
  2. Run it once in --measure mode; the red rows are the honest starting list — re-point or drop each by row (the judgement Six more skills/objectui/evals assertions grade tokens their own guide never teaches, and one passes only by accidental substring match #7360 funded per row), never mechanically.
  3. Wire it like skill-examples.yml (own workflow, no path filters, REQUIRED_CONTEXTS row, pipeline-doc inventory), or as a second phase inside check-skill-examples.mjs if the harness fits — the implementer decides and says why.

⛔ Not in scope: rewriting guide prose to teach a token an eval wants — that is a per-row skills decision.

Claim: skills lane seat — graded and dispatched in one write (priority:p2 + pm:dispatched + domain:skills), 2026-09-03T07:40Z. Triage is vacant in objectui and this is the lane's own programme follow-up (the gate the #7359 / PR #7427 claim promised as its own card), so the seat grades it, as it did #7359. Value gate (#13597): it ends a drift class two hand sweeps (#7360, #7405) have already paid for — passes.
    Session: session_01LraLgQVGq8egUwfYZpbYt1
    Branch: claude/issue-7461-eval-token-oracle-gate
    Worktree: /home/user/objectui-issue-7461
Clause-②: no — a gate, no contract claim. Governed: any eval row that moves is skills/objectui/** ⇒ the PR stays DRAFT (ui#6866 批 #7); review requests are the seat's step.

Scope, exactly the card's three steps, with the two design inputs decided and argued rather than assumed:

    1. The runner (its own script or a second phase of scripts/check-skill-examples.mjs — decide, and say why): every must_contain token of every skills/objectui/evals/*.json must occur as a WHOLE token (word-boundary or token-boundary match, never substring) in the oracle's guide set; must_not_contain is not validated against the guides (shape check at most). Exit 2 PRECONDITION NOT MET on an empty population, per feat(gates): check the marked fenced examples in the skill guides #7427's convention; a --self-test with both directions (a taught token passes; an untaught one reds; a substring-only match reds; a must_not_contain entry does not red).
    2. The oracle: measure BOTH (per-guide = guides/BASENAME.md matching the eval file; bundle-wide = the whole skill) in --measure mode, print the two red lists, and pick one with the four-axis reasoning below — the registerComponent row on evals/page-builder.json eval 1 is the known disagreement. ⛔ Do not rewrite guide prose to teach a token; ⛔ do not drop or re-point rows mechanically — list the red rows in the PR body as the honest starting list for a per-row follow-up, and land the gate opt-in / zero-red on day one (baseline the red rows the way check-doc-fence-languages.mjs baselines its declared files, shrink-only) unless the red list is empty under the chosen oracle.
    3. Wire it like skill-examples.yml (own workflow, no paths / paths-ignore, REQUIRED_CONTEXTS row in scripts/dependabot-merge-gate.mjs, merge-queue-reporting.test.ts, the ci-cd-pipeline.md inventory) or, if it is a phase of the existing gate, prove the existing workflow already runs it.

Case-sensitive. Self-test pins all three measured false positives: `view` in a vite-preview comment is whole-token 0 (caught); FieldWidgetProps in FieldWidgetPropsSchema is 0 (caught); `create` in a mocked vi.fn assignment is whole-token 1 — NOT caught and cannot be, since it really IS a whole token there and the mismatch is semantic. So skill-eval-tokens.yml takes skills-paths.yml's install-free shape (checkout plus two node calls), and check-pre-install-import-graph.mjs picks the new steps up automatically: its run went from 21 pre-install steps / 19 gates to 23 / 21, every non-relative leaf a node builtin. Not a defect under the chosen oracle and nothing in this PR depends on it, but it is the single fact that decided the oracle, and it means the evals/ and guides/ directories are not in the 1:1 correspondence a reader would assume. Worth a card only if someone wants the correspondence made explicit (a naming convention, or a stated exception) — implementation-first, so recording it beats inventing a mapping.",

Green under the chosen oracle (whole-token `chart` occurs in guides/plugin-development.md:12, guides/data-integration.md:202 and guides/schema-expressions.md:287), so this gate does not and should not red it. Recorded because it is the one row where the two oracles disagree on something that is not a missing-file artefact, and a per-row reader may still judge the page-builder guide ought to teach the token its own eval grades.",
"REPORT ONLY. `create` in a mocked vi.fn assignment remains a whole-token match, so the class #7405 cleaned by hand — an eval token that is present as a word but means something else in context — is NOT closed by any token-level gate and cannot be. Stated in the script header, the self-test, the spec and the PR body rather than left implicit. ACCEPT — skills-lane seat (session session_01LraLgQVGq8egUwfYZpbYt1), reviewer of record, verified against GitHub and the branch fetched into a throwaway compare worktree, not the report (report comment 5522631128 witnessed by get_comments). 2026-09-03T08:44Z.

    • PR feat(scripts): gate every eval must_contain token against the guides its bundle ships #7475 exists, head 0ee77b8, 7 files, +1,362 −0, one commit; Fixes #7461; auto-labels configuration · ci/cd · dependencies · tests; no changeset (the presence gate's own verdict: none owed); zero files under skills/ — the card's ⛔ on eval rows and guide prose honoured literally.
    • Run by the seat at 08:10Z in the compare worktree, no install: node scripts/check-skill-eval-tokens.mjs exit 0 — Every must_contain token is taught by its own skill bundle., Red under the chosen oracle: 0 (0 beyond the baseline); --self-test exit 0, 29 cases pass; --measure exit 0 printing both oracles (bundle-wide 0 of 125; per-guide 14 of 125, of which 12 exist only because evals/protocol.json has no guides/protocol.md — its guide is rules/protocol.md).
    • Seat's own reverse check: "SchemaRenderer" → "SchemaRendererNobodyTeaches" in evals/page-builder.json (mutation proved on disk) → exit 1 naming skills/objectui/evals/page-builder.json eval 1 [untaught] "SchemaRendererNobodyTeaches" (it appears nowhere in the bundle, in any form); restored (git diff HEAD empty) → exit 0.
    • Design accepted as argued on the four axes: bundle-wide oracle (the corpus an eval is answered from is the bundle; per-guide is not total over today's corpus and would baseline 12 rows no per-row decision can retire); whole-token matching with the identifier-boundary rule, the three Three more skills/objectui/evals assertions grade nothing — two by accidental substring, which a grep -c == 0 audit cannot see #7405 false positives pinned and the create-as-mocked-method class stated as a semantic limit no token gate closes; must_not_contain shape-checked only; an empty shrink-only baseline KNOWN_UNTAUGHT_EVAL_TOKENS with bundle-qualified row keys (a stale row reds too); its own install-free script and workflow rather than a phase of check-skill-examples.mjs, because that gate exits 2 on an unbuilt tree before judging anything.
    • Wiring verified by the seat at head: skill-eval-tokens.yml on pull_request / push / merge_group with no paths / paths-ignore (its header says why), two node steps, no install; REQUIRED_CONTEXTS row Skill Eval Token Check at dependabot-merge-gate.mjs:168; package.json script check:skill-eval-tokens; merge-queue-reporting.test.ts row; the ci-cd-pipeline.md inventory row + section; a 451-line pin suite; check-pre-install-import-graph picks the new steps up (23 steps / 21 gates).
    • CI at 0ee77b8, read 08:43Z: all 29 check runs success or skipped — including the new gate's own first run, Skill Eval Token Check success at 08:07:45Z (the feat(gates): check the marked fenced examples in the skill guides #7427 rule: a new gate's first CI run on its PR is ACCEPT evidence). Test (shard 3/4) first failed on packages/app-shell/src/views/RecordDetailView.approvalDeclaredActions.test.tsx — a happy-dom network-escape guard hit in a file this diff does not touch (standing-down note on the PR 5522858059); the PR's single rerun_failed_jobs (08:29Z) passed it at 08:39:00Z, which is the discriminator for "not this PR's".
    • Follow-ups recorded on the seat ledger, not carded: evals/protocol.json pairs with rules/protocol.md, not guides/ (the fact that decided the oracle); page-builder.json eval 3 chart is taught only in sibling guides; the semantic class stays a human reading.
    • Not a governed surface (check-governed-queue-guard --test NOT GOVERNED, 0 skills/ paths) ⇒ the seat's own terminal: flipped ready and auto-merge armed (SQUASH) at 08:45Z with this ACCEPT; read-back follows. At MERGED the seat strips pm:dispatched (Fixes ⇒ the card closes).

Read-back at 2026-09-03T08:46Z for PR #7475 (branch claude/issue-7461-eval-token-oracle-gate): state open, draft false, mergeable_state clean, head 0ee77b8. enable_pr_auto_merge returned "Auto-merge enabled" with method SQUASH at 08:46Z. The ACCEPT above wrote 08:45Z for the arm; the draft flip landed at 08:45Z and the arm itself one minute later. All 29 checks on the head were green before the arm.

MERGED is witnessed only by a git log --grep '(#7475)' run at the next merge patrol (timer at 09:08Z); pm:dispatched comes off this card at that reading, not before.
