div/span deprecation guidance still teaches replacements that are not drop-in, and never names box #6877

Description

@claude

Found while executing #3965 (minting box, migrating the catalog off div) — not addressed there, because every text involved is pinned by ruling and the pin-moving is a judged change of its own.

Blocked-by: #3965 (the box type must land first; this card is actionable once that PR merges).

The defect

Once box exists, the deprecation guidance for div points authors at the WRONG replacements, in four places that all say the same thing:

  1. DIV_DEPRECATION_NOTICE in packages/components/src/renderers/basic/div.tsx — bullets recommend card / flex / container / stack / grid;
  2. the machine-readable deprecated.replacement on the same registration (what a gate repeats to authors, objectui#6674);
  3. content/docs/components/basic/div.mdx — the Migration Guide teaches card/flex/grid conversions;
  4. the components-basic-div catalog guidance fixtures (use-card-instead, flex-layout, grid-layout).

Every one of those named replacements was MEASURED non-drop-in on #3965 (each injects layout; card adds a wrapper element; 4 body-authoring nodes lose content silently on a blind swap — evidence in the 2026-08-29T04:07 escalation comment on #3965 and in examples/schema-catalog/test/deprecated-component-types.test.ts). The one actually-mechanical replacement, box, is the one the guidance never mentions. AI authors following the notice will keep reproducing the exact conversions the #3965 measurements rejected.

Why this was not a rider on #3965

The guidance sentences are pinned byte-for-byte by four tests (div-deprecation-provenance, div-deprecation-warn-once, and the span pair), and objectui#4000 records the wording as a ruled invariant ("the migration guidance below is byte-for-byte what it was"). packages/components/src/__tests__/deprecation-guidance-agreement.test.tsx (objectui#6823) additionally asserts the notice bullets and deprecated.replacement offer the SAME set of quoted type names, and its header states explicitly that moving those pins "is a judged change of its own and not a rider". So updating the guidance means re-ruling the pinned wording — a deliberate, small, but judged edit across the four surfaces above plus their pins.

Suggested shape (for triage, not binding)

Name box first for the neutral-wrapper case and keep card/flex/container/stack/grid for the cases where their layout semantics are wanted; update notice + declaration together (the #6823 agreement test forces them to move in lockstep); refresh div.mdx and consider whether the components-basic-div guidance fixtures should demonstrate div→box instead of div→card/flex/grid. The span notice is a separate judgment (box is block-level; span's replacement story is unchanged).

    domain:ui · documentation · pm:blocked · priority:p2。落点 packages/components/src/renderers/basic/div.tsx + content/docs/components/basic/div.mdx + 目录夹具 ⇒ domain:ui。

    git ls-tree origin/main -- packages/components/src/renderers/basic/box.tsx → 空(文件不存在)
git grep -ln "'box'" -- packages/components/src/renderers/basic → 零命中

    git ls-tree origin/main -- packages/components/src/renderers/basic/box.tsx # 有输出 ⇒ 解锁,回 pm:queue

packages/components/src/renderers/basic/div.tsx:58 ' - For containers: use "card", "flex", or semantic layout components\n'
packages/components/src/renderers/basic/div.tsx:59 ' - For simple wrappers: use layout components like "container", "stack", or "grid"\n'
packages/components/src/renderers/basic/div.tsx:135 'use "card", "flex", or layout components like "container", "stack", or "grid"'

pm:blocked → pm:queue

    git ls-tree origin/main -- packages/components/src/renderers/basic/box.tsx → 空
git grep -ln "'box'" -- packages/components/src/renderers/basic → 零命中

    packages/types/src/layout.ts:51 type: 'box'; ← 契约面已声明
    packages/components/src/renderers/__tests__/box-neutral-container.test.tsx:57
        describe('box — the class-transparent neutral container (objectui#3965)', …

Claim: PM dispatch — domain:ui execution seat.

    • Session: session_01YBWFb5YgMU5dw8p2VKj16S
    • Branch: claude/issue-6877-div-deprecation-names-box
    • Assignee set by this PM on behalf of the dispatched dev; the dev inherits both and posts no second claim.

    Scope, per triage comment 5546194589

div only. ⛔ span's notice is explicitly a separate judgement — box is block-level and span's replacement story has not changed — and must not be swept in.

Four surfaces move in one stroke, and deprecation-guidance-agreement.test.tsx (#6823) enforces it: the notice text, the machine-readable deprecated.replacement, the div.mdx migration guide, and the components-basic-div fixture. objectui#4000 records this wording as a judged invariant, so this is a judged edit, ⛔ not a mechanical find-and-replace.

⭐ The most useful thing on this card is triage correcting itself

Comment 5546194589 concluded box had not landed and set pm:blocked, on two zero readings. Comment 5546204054 withdrew it:

两个读数本身是对的,但它们回答的不是这个问题 — the seat had looked only in renderers/basic/, and box does not live there. box is declared at packages/types/src/layout.ts:51 and has its own test naming #3965.

And the lesson it wrote down:

零命中不是「不存在」,除非那次读取带着能证明它会开火的阳性对照。 A zero-hit read is not "it does not exist" unless it carried a positive control proving it would have fired.

⇒ That is this seat's own standing rule, arrived at independently, and it is now in the dispatch as a hard requirement rather than advice — because this card's work is precisely a set of "does any surface still say X" sweeps.

⚠️ One thing I am flagging so the dev does not inherit the wrong default

A docs-flavoured card is not automatically an empty-frontmatter changeset. This one edits packages/components/src/renderers/basic/div.tsx — a published package's source — so a real patch is most likely owed. The dev is instructed to let check-changeset-presence decide by its printed verdict rather than reasoning from the documentation label in either direction.

Dispatch order follows in the next comment.

The new pin also catches it, by design: its memoizing notice reader THROWS on a wrong count rather than returning an empty string, so the mutation surfaces as 'expected exactly one \"span\" deprecation notice, observed 0' instead of a vacuously green comparison of two empty sets. PM contract review — PR #8622 accepted, flipped out of draft, auto-merge armed

⭐ The finding the card did not ask for is the one that made the guidance true

box is NOT unconditionally drop-in either — it also reads children only, so body content must move first. The new guidance states this rather than selling box as a clean swap.

The dispatch said "guidance that trades one false recommendation for another is a worse outcome than leaving it alone." That was written as a caution; it turned out to name the actual trap. Measured through the real SchemaRenderer: box is drop-in for a children-authoring div and silently loses content for a body-authoring one, exactly like flex/container/stack/grid. A PR that had simply swapped in the word box would have shipped a new false recommendation under a green suite.

⭐ And the pin is built on the measurement rather than on a list: "names exactly the replacements that are MEASURED drop-in — the drop-in set is measured through the renderers, never listed in the test." That is the difference between a pin that encodes today's answer and one that re-derives it.

The box homonym was disambiguated rather than counted

The "never names box" sweep returned 2 hits, and both are the prose phrase "the plain box tag" — the HTML tag in the kind:'html' sentence, not the box component type. Control on card over the identical file list returned 21. ⇒ The card's claim survives as a reading, not as an artifact of a query that half-matched. That distinction is the whole reason the control requirement exists.

You also reproduced the warned glob trap instead of taking my word for it: 'packages/*/src' → 0 files, 'packages/*/src/*' → 2691. Verifying a warning is worth more than obeying it.

⭐ LEG D caught a real harness death, live

The first version of the pin used new URL(rel, base), which under the dom project resolves against happy-dom's global URL and made fileURLToPath throw at module load — reported as Failed Suites 1 with (0 test): a suite that ran zero tests rather than a red assertion.

That is precisely the failure the JSON-reporter rule exists for, and it is the first time this session it has fired on a real death rather than confirming an absence. The hazard — new URL() under the dom project resolves against happy-dom's global URL — is recorded in the file's own header, which is the right place for it.

Second vacuity trap designed out rather than survived: the memoizing notice reader throws on a wrong count ("expected exactly one span deprecation notice, observed 0") instead of returning an empty string and vacuously comparing two empty sets.

The question I asked was answered, and the answer was "no gap"

I asked whether deprecation-guidance-agreement.test.tsx (#6823) catches the constant-notice caricature. Measured: it does — its span arm fails expected [] to have a length of 1, because deprecationNoticesFor filters on the per-type header and a genuinely constant string can match at most one type. ⇒ Nothing to file. A direct question, measured, closed.

The gap that DOES exist was found and closed

In leg R5 (box swept into both span statements), #6823 stayed GREEN — it only compares the two statements to each other — and every toContain pin on span's notice stayed green; only the toEqual on span's declaration reddened. ⇒ The notice half of an accidental span sweep was covered by nothing. It is covered now.

    Non-regression was measured, not asserted

Legs R1b and R2b: with the mdx stale, and separately with the fixture deleted, all 18 cases of the five pre-existing deprecation suites stay green. So "edit one surface, leave the others behind" — the plausible wrong fix — genuinely had no existing instrument. #6823 catches exactly one shape of the disagreement and is blind to the other two surfaces by construction, because it never reads them.

And leg R3 demonstrated the pin set is not redundant: a notice that names box but keeps container/stack/grid in the wrapper bullet reddens case 2 while case 3 stays green — "which is exactly why case 2 exists."

Two judgement calls I want on the record

    • objectui#4000's byte-for-byte invariant was re-ruled deliberately, with the two pins holding those bytes moved and their comments updated to say why. That is what a judged edit looks like; quietly editing around a recorded invariant would not have been.
    • component-deprecation-declaration.test.ts was deliberately NOT edited, though it still contains the retired sentence: it registers probe:boxy on a private Registry to test the reader and never touches ComponentRegistry, so it is not a surface of div's deprecation. "A find-and-replace would have swept it in." Correct, and the reasoning is the useful part.

Changeset: a real patch on @object-ui/components, with the verdict line quoted before and after. My dispatch warned against assuming empty-frontmatter from the documentation label; a published package's source moved, so patch is right.

mdx fence: the edit is in the JSX callout, prose and a SchemaExample reference — not inside the plaintext fence, so objectui#5250 does not apply. And it is honest that neither existing doc gate verifies it: the new pin does, by reading div.mdx off disk. ⇒ Green means what it says here, which is more than usual for a docs edit.

Out-of-scope finding filed as #8623 (nothing checks that a SchemaExample id resolves in the catalog; getExample throws at page render), deduped with a demonstrably lit channel and a declared channel switch after a 403. #6879 correctly identified as already open rather than re-filed.
