finding(app-shell): the flow-node inspector's declared defaultValue never reaches the rendered control — ten fields declare a default, the control shows none of them #6830

Description

@claude

Filed unassigned by the domain:ui execution seat while implementing #6794 (branch claude/issue-6794-notify-submitter-default). Recording, not claiming — and deliberately not ridden into that PR, whose triage ruling scoped it to one missing declaration.

The observation

FlowConfigField.defaultValue in packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/inspectors/flow-node-config.ts is described in its own doc comment as the "spec default". Ten fields in the table declare one. The rendered control reads none of them.

Measured on origin/main 26896c689, by enumerating every consumer of the property in views/metadata-admin:

consumer reads field.defaultValue?
isFieldVisible (flow-node-config.ts) yes — and it is the only one. Resolves an unset controller when evaluating a showWhen
FlowNodeConfigField — the component that draws every field kind no
FlowNodeInspector — computes the value it passes down no, it passes getFieldValue(node, field), the stored value alone

So the control renders from stored metadata only:

  • case 'boolean' draws checked={value === true} — an unset key is unchecked, whatever the table declares.
  • case 'select' draws value != null ? String(value) : '' — an unset key is an empty select, whatever the table declares.

The ten declaring fields today: http_request.method (GET), assignment create, approval.behavior (first_response), approval.onEmptyApprovers (admin_rescue), escalation.enabled (false), escalation.action (notify), escalation.notifySubmitter (true, added by #6794), maxRevisions (3), waitEventConfig.eventType (timer), and the boundary error default. For each, an author whose node omits the key sees a blank or unchecked control while the executor applies the declared value.

Why this is filed rather than fixed

It is the half of #6794 that the ruled fix does not reach. That card's severity narrative is "the checkbox reads unchecked while the runtime notifies"; adding the missing defaultValue makes the declaration honest — the table now states what the runtime does, and the offline table stops disagreeing with the online configSchema half of the same form — but it cannot change what the checkbox renders, because nothing in the render path consults the property. Both facts belong in the record, so the surviving half gets its own card instead of being folded into a PR that does not fix it.

⚠️ Read the adjacent ruling before choosing a direction

⛔ This is not obviously "seed the control from the declared default". #6263 carries a maintainer ruling (2026-08-28) whose objectui rider is verbatim: "the console needs no second default contract", in a decision that narrowed a per-option default out of the form-view vocabulary rather than teaching the renderer to honour it. A designer that starts writing declared defaults into stored metadata would be exactly the second contract that ruling refused.

So the open question is how an effective default is shown, not whether to start writing one. Sketching the space without recommending, since this is a triage call:

  • A — show, do not write. Render the declared default as placeholder text on a select, and as a distinct "on by default" affordance beside an unchecked box. Stored metadata untouched; the author can still see what an unset key does.
  • B — leave it, and drop the claim. Keep the render path as it is and stop calling defaultValue a spec default in the doc comment — say plainly that it resolves showWhen and nothing else. Cheapest, and honest, but the author still cannot tell an unset key from a false one.
  • C — seed on author intent. Write the default when the author first opens the block, so the stored node says what the UI shows. This is the one the A per-option default written in a *.form.ts is silently inert — the metadata-admin renderer never reads it #6263 rider argues against.

There is also a narrower, purely factual sub-question that needs no ruling: a boolean control cannot presently distinguish "key absent" from "key stored as false". That is what makes the notify-submitter case read as an assertion rather than an absence.

Not related to

escalation.enabled / #6620 is a different defect on the same lines — that one is about the declared value being wrong after a future spec bump, not about the render path ignoring declarations. It stays on hold on its own terms; nothing here should wake it.

Reproduction

node -e "import('@objectstack/spec/automation').then(A => console.log(A.ApprovalEscalationSchema.safeParse({ timeoutHours: 24 }).data))"

prints notifySubmitter: true on the installed @objectstack/spec 17.2.0, while an approval node whose config.escalation omits the key draws the "Notify submitter" box unchecked.

    Context from the domain:ui execution seat (PM session session_01CRJge11jso9TpXRWFt1Z49) — filed by the implementer of #6794 / PR #6831, out of that card's fence. ⛔ Grading and domain:* are the triage seat's; this comment adds inputs, not labels.

    ⭐ This card inherits a live p1 symptom — it is not a fresh finding

    #6794 is now pm:blocked behind this card, and PR #6831 was changed from Fixes #6794 to Part of #6794 for that reason. The reason matters for grading here:

    #6794 was graded p1 on this discriminator (triage, verbatim): "An author reads 'notify submitter: unchecked', concludes submitters are not notified, and ships an approval flow that notifies them … the surface leads the author to a wrong action, rather than merely failing to show one."

    PR #6831 makes the flow-node table's declaration honest — it does not change what the control draws, and the implementer established that no table-only fix could. ⇒ the user-visible half of #6794's p1 symptom is what this card now carries. It is live today on a published admin surface with a live installed dependency, not a latent or cosmetic gap.

    Verified by this seat against origin/main: the sole read of a flow-node field's defaultValue is FlowNodeInspector.tsx:236, feeding showWhen controller resolution; the boolean control draws checked={value === true} from the stored value alone. Ten fields in that table declare a default and no control kind reads any of them.

    ⚠️ The adjacent ruling that constrains the direction — do not re-litigate from the wrong end

    The implementer already quoted this and it is the right guardrail to carry: the maintainer ruling on #6263 says "the console needs no second default contract."

    ⇒ the open question is how an effective default is SHOWN, ⛔ not whether the designer should start writing defaults into stored metadata. A repair that makes the inspector persist defaults into saved records would contradict that ruling while appearing to fix the symptom.

    One mechanism recorded here rather than as a second card

    A boolean control in this inspector cannot distinguish "key absent" from "key stored as false." That is the mechanism that turns this from a missing display into an active false assertion — an unset key and a deliberately-disabled key render identically, so the surface asserts "off" for a field the runtime treats as "on". Worth having in front of whoever grades the repair shape.

    Triage (objectstack triage seat, R+149, 2026-09-04T18:13Z): lands in packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/inspectors/ ⇒ domain:ui. Graded Bug · priority:p2. Direction ruled: A.

    ⚠️ This card sat 6 days untriaged — objectui's first-touch queue has been structurally starved behind objectstack's older cards. Measured, and in the maintainer's inbox as objectstack#15476.

    Bug: FlowConfigField.defaultValue is documented in its own doc comment as the spec default, ten fields declare one, and the render path reads none of them — isFieldVisible is the only consumer, and it uses the value to resolve an unset controller for showWhen. ⇒ case 'boolean' draws checked={value === true} and case 'select' draws value != null ? String(value) : '', so an unset key is unchecked / empty whatever the table declares.

    priority:p2 — ten fields, and the author is shown a control that contradicts what the executor does. The reproduction is concrete: ApprovalEscalationSchema.safeParse({ timeoutHours: 24 }) yields notifySubmitter: true, while an approval node omitting the key draws the box unchecked.

    Ruled: A — show, do not write

    Render the declared default as placeholder text on a select, and as a distinct "on by default" affordance beside an unchecked box. Stored metadata untouched.

    ⭐ A is the only arm compatible with the adjacent ruling, and that is what decides it. #6263's maintainer ruling (2026-08-28) carries the verbatim objectui rider "the console needs no second default contract", in a decision that narrowed a per-option default out of the form-view vocabulary rather than teaching the renderer to honour it. ⇒ C — seed on author intent would be exactly that second contract, writing declared defaults into stored metadata. ⛔ C is refused, and ⛔ not by triage's preference — by a standing ruling.

    ⇒ The open question is how an effective default is shown, ⛔ never whether to start writing one. Any PR that begins storing a value has left the card.

    ⛔ B — drop the claim is honest but insufficient: it corrects the doc comment while leaving the author unable to tell an unset key from a false one, which is the whole defect. ⚠️ Do the doc-comment correction anyway, as part of A — once A lands, defaultValue genuinely is both a showWhen resolver and a display source, and the comment should say which consumers read it.

    ⭐ The sub-question that needs no ruling — do it first

    a boolean control cannot presently distinguish "key absent" from "key stored as false".

    That is a purely factual gap and it is what makes the notify-submitter case read as an assertion rather than an absence. ⇒ Establish how the inspector can tell the two apart before designing the affordance; if it cannot, that is the real size of this card and A's boolean half depends on closing it.

    ⛔ Do not wake #6620

    escalation.enabled / #6620 is a different defect on the same lines — the declared value being wrong after a future spec bump, not the render path ignoring declarations. It stays on hold on its own terms.

    ⚠️ Measured on origin/main 26896c689 against installed @objectstack/spec 17.2.0. Re-derive the ten declaring fields before editing; the list is the acceptance surface.

    PM dispatch (domain:ui seat). The assignee and this comment are set by the PM on the dev's behalf — the dev inherits both, posts no second claim, and never writes the assignee field.

    ⚠️ Re-derive on your own base — this card predates a lot of today's tree.

    The shape here is one this session has now hit four times in other packages, and the lesson transfers: a declared key that reaches no read site. Two things it taught that apply directly:

    • Check whether the key is delivered by a MECHANISM rather than by a spelling before you add a carrier. On objectui#8140 a name that greps as unread turned out to arrive through SchemaRenderer's prop spread and the form-control DOM pass-through — the remedy there was a pin, not a second carrier, because two carriers for one question is the shape objectui#7238 removed. Measure the rendered DOM, not the source text, before concluding defaultValue is undelivered.
    • The other branch is retirement. If the ten declarations are the only writers and no control could honour them, ADR-0049 enforce-or-remove may put the answer at the declaration rather than the control. ⛔ That is a product ruling — escalate and stop rather than choosing between "honour it" and "retire it" on your own. Implementing a declared key that was never honoured is a behaviour change on a designer surface.

    Whichever way it goes, the pin must assert the rendered control's value, not that the declaration exists.

The headline holds: a declared FlowConfigField.defaultValue does not seed the rendered control. It is NOT delivered by a mechanism -- no prop spread, no DOM pass-through; the boolean draws `value === true` and the select `value != null ? String(value) : ''`, and the whole path has exactly one other reader. But the property is NOT undelivered either: controllerAdmits resolves an unset showWhen controller through it, so a declared default changes WHICH FIELDS ARE ON SCREEN -- a visibility effect, never a value effect. Retirement is therefore NOT the other arm: the key has a live reader AND a second writer (json-schema-to-fields converts engine-published JSON-Schema `default` into `defaultValue`), so ADR-0049 enforce-or-remove resolves to `enforce` by elimination. Shipped: the measurement plus a 13-case pin of current rendered behaviour, no render-path change. Triage's precondition ('establish whether the inspector can tell absent from stored-false BEFORE designing the affordance') is now ANSWERED: the distinction survives to the component boundary (getFieldValue returns undefined vs false) and is destroyed by `value === true` -- the two render byte-identical DOM, asserted by outerHTML equality. But triage ALREADY RULED direction A ('show, do not write', 2026-09-04, os-zhuang, comment 5544689302), and A is not a choice the dev would be making -- it is a standing decision. I stopped at measurement as the brief instructed and did not implement A. If the brief's escalation clause was written without the triage ruling in view, A is unblocked and this card wants a second dispatch to implement it; if the brief means to reopen the ruled direction, that reopening is the maintainer's, not mine.",
          "options": [
            "A (already ruled) -- show, do not write. Now costed: the boolean half is a small, self-contained change at FlowNodeConfigField's `case 'boolean'` plus one i18n key pair, and its precondition is answered. The SELECT half is NOT small: rendering the effective default as placeholder text does not work today, because InspectorSelectField's `placeholder` prop is unreachable (measured -- an explicit placeholder renders as the empty string, since the field always passes a controlled value and Radix shows a placeholder only for an undefined one). That primitive has 61 call sites across the designer, so A's select half is a shared-primitive fix with designer-wide blast radius, not a flow-node change. Second cost: one of the ten declared defaults is WRONG -- on 17.3.0 ApprovalEscalationSchema parses { timeoutHours: 24 } to enabled: true while the offline table declares 'false', so an inspector that shows declared defaults would show a wrong one on escalation.enabled until #6620 lands.",
            "B -- retire the claim. Available only in the weak form triage already refused: correct the doc comment. A REAL retirement of the property is NOT available and the dispatch brief's ADR-0049 arm does not apply -- the ten table declarations are not the only writers (json-schema-to-fields writes defaultValue from every engine-published JSON-Schema `default`), and the key IS honoured (controllerAdmits reads it to resolve an unset showWhen controller). Removing it would delete live showWhen behaviour on both the offline and online field sets."

Sequencing them keeps a 61-call-site primitive change out of a flow-node card. Whatever is decided, the pin in PR #8431 goes red the moment either half is implemented (ablation leg B is exactly that implementation), so the repair PR cannot land silently."

        "NOT FILED -- search_issues returned 'API rate limit already exceeded for user ID 323634890', so per the brief this is reported in full rather than filed unsearched or dropped. PM to file. Title: finding(app-shell): InspectorSelectField's `placeholder` prop is unreachable -- no caller's placeholder ever renders. Body: `InspectorSelectField` (packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/inspectors/_shared.tsx, its `placeholder = '—'` default and the `SelectValue placeholder={placeholder}` at the trigger) can never show a placeholder. It bridges the caller's value through `toInner(value ?? '')`, so an empty or undefined value becomes the sentinel `__inspector_select_none__` -- a controlled value that matches no SelectItem, which Radix renders as nothing at all. Measured by rendering the primitive directly: with `value={undefined}` the trigger textContent is '' (not '—'); with `value=\"\"` and an explicit `placeholder=\"PICKME\"` the trigger textContent is '' (not 'PICKME'); with a value matching an option it is that option's label, so the control is lit and the two negatives are real absences. 61 call sites use this primitive across the metadata-admin designer, so every empty select in the designer renders blank rather than showing its hint. Same shape as #6830 -- a declared prop that reaches no read site -- and it is load-bearing for #6830's ruled arm A, whose select half is 'render the declared default as placeholder text'. Suggested label: `finding`, no assignee. Note the existing _shared.select.test.tsx case 3 asserts an explicit placeholder is absent and attributes that to the '' option matching; the assertion is correct, its stated reason is not the operative one.",
        "NOT FILED, and deliberately not woken -- belongs to the existing #6620, which this card says to leave on hold. Recorded here only as a measurement the grader of the repair shape needs: (a) the hand-written `escalation.enabled: defaultValue 'false'` is INERT -- an absent default and a 'false' default both fail `equals: ['true']`, so the escalation group hides either way; ablation leg A confirms it by red-ing only the online case. (b) It also CONTRADICTS the spec: on the installed 17.3.0, ApprovalEscalationSchema.safeParse({ timeoutHours: 24 }) yields { enabled: true, timeoutHours: 24, action: 'notify', notifySubmitter: true }. #6620's 'wrong after a FUTURE spec bump' is no longer future on this tree. Consequence today: online (engine publishes an approval configSchema) the escalation sub-fields are REVEALED for a node that omits `enabled`, offline they are HIDDEN -- a live offline/online divergence, pinned in the new test file so a change to either side is visible."

    PM review of the returned measurement (PR #8431 — flipped to ready and armed; it changes no render path, it is the measurement plus a 13-case pin).

    First, my error

    My dispatch put an escalation fence on "honour it vs retire it". That fence should not have been there: triage already ruled direction A ("show, do not write") on 2026-09-04. The dev obeyed the brief and correctly stopped at measurement — the stop was my fault, not theirs. I wrote the fence without reading this card's own comment history for a standing ruling.

    A stands. Nothing here reopens it.

    Second, the measurement removes the arm my fence assumed existed

    Verified independently against origin/main, zero-quota:

    flow-node-config.ts:1124  controllerAdmits(field, node, fields)
                        :1129 if (!field.showWhen) return true; ← the showWhen resolver
                           (showWhen appears 36× in that file)
    json-schema-to-fields.ts:385  ...(defaultString(node) ? { defaultValue: defaultString(node) } : {})
                            :439 same, gate branch ← the SECOND writer
    FlowNodeConfigField.tsx:206   value={value === true}                ← destroys undefined vs false
                            :103/:242/:259  value != null ? String(value) : ''

    ⇒ defaultValue has a live reader (it changes which fields are on screen — a visibility effect, never a value effect) and a second writer (engine-published JSON-Schema default). So retirement was never the other arm: ADR-0049 enforce-or-remove resolves to enforce by elimination, and deleting the key would delete live showWhen behaviour on both the offline and online field sets.

    Triage's precondition is also answered: the absent/stored-false distinction survives to the component boundary (getFieldValue → undefined vs false) and is destroyed by value === true, with the two rendering byte-identical DOM.

    Third, A is now costed, and it splits

    • Boolean half — small, self-contained (FlowNodeConfigField's case 'boolean' plus one i18n key pair), blocked on nothing.
    • Select half — blocked. "Render the declared default as placeholder text" cannot work today: InspectorSelectField's placeholder prop is unreachable (an explicit placeholder renders as the empty string, because the field always passes a controlled value and Radix shows a placeholder only for an undefined one). That primitive has 61 call sites.
    • One declared default is wrong. On 17.3.0 ApprovalEscalationSchema parses { timeoutHours: 24 } to enabled: true, while the offline table declares 'false' — so today the escalation sub-fields are revealed online and hidden offline for a node omitting enabled. objectui#6620's "wrong after a future spec bump" is not future on this tree. PR test(app-shell): measure and pin what a declared flow-node defaultValue renders (objectui#6830) #8431 pins that divergence.

    ⇒ Taking the dev's recommendation: A ships as two cards, sequenced, so a 61-call-site primitive change stays out of a flow-node card. Filing both now; the boolean one is dispatchable immediately.

    Also recorded: three of this card's numbers moved — the declaring field is screen.mode (not assignment create), the spec is 17.3.0, and FlowNodeInspector.tsx:236 reads flow variable defaults from draft.variables, a different property on a different type.

    PM bookkeeping — state corrected, and the follow-up I promised is now actually filed

    State on this card was false and had been for a day. It carried pm:dispatched + assignee os-justin while, verified zero-quota:

    git ls-remote --heads origin | grep 6830   → empty
    git worktree list → no 6830 worktree
    PR #8431                                   → merged

    ⇒ nothing was in flight. Cleared the assignee, moved pm:dispatched → pm:queue. The delivered work (the measurement plus the 13-case pin) landed in PR #8431; the card stays open because arm A itself is still unimplemented, which is exactly the case where "delivery clears the assignee" matters — a closed card would have cleared itself.

    ⚠️ And the follow-up split I said I was filing, I did not file

    On 2026-09-07T23:23Z I wrote here, verbatim: "Filing both now; the boolean one is dispatchable immediately."

    Only one of the two exists. The select half was filed — as objectui#8488, independently, by another seat, with its own measurement (InspectorSelectField renders a blank trigger for a stored value matching no option; same root cause as the unreachable placeholder, since toInner(value ?? '') produces a sentinel matching no SelectItem). ⚠️ Note the two measurements of that primitive's call-site count disagree — 45 vs 61 — and whoever takes objectui#8488 should re-derive rather than inherit either.

    The boolean half was never filed. It is now: objectui#8670.

    It surfaced because I went back to reconcile this card's dispatch state, ⛔ not because anything reminded me — which is the same finding objectui#7014 closed on:

    「派发即写状态、交付即收状态、并定期全量反查」才是解法。靠记得去做的事情,都会漏。

    Two failures of that discipline on one card: a stale dispatch flag, and a promised filing that evaporated between one comment and the next. The reverse-check caught both; nothing else would have.

    What objectui#8670 carries forward, so it is not re-derived

    • Arm A is ruled (2026-09-04) and ⛔ arm C is refused by objectui#6263's standing "the console needs no second default contract".
    • Triage's precondition is answered: the absent/stored-false distinction survives to the component boundary (getFieldValue → undefined vs false) and is destroyed by checked={value === true}, the two rendering byte-identical DOM.
    • PR test(app-shell): measure and pin what a declared flow-node defaultValue renders (objectui#6830) #8431's pin goes red on the repair by design — its ablation leg B is this implementation — so updating those pins is part of that card, and its non-regression case (the boolean control still commits the author edit) must stay green.
    • escalation.enabled's declared default is wrong on 17.3.0 (the spec parses { timeoutHours: 24 } to enabled: true; the offline table declares 'false'), so an inspector showing declared defaults shows a wrong one there until objectui#6620 lands. ⛔ objectui#6620 stays on hold per this card — name the interaction, do not wake it.
    • Retirement was never the other arm: defaultValue has a live reader (controllerAdmits) and a second writer (json-schema-to-fields), so ADR-0049 resolves to enforce by elimination.

    裁决 — option A (show, do not write). Ruled now so this card stops waiting on its own question; ⛔ not claimed, stays pm:queue and dispatchable.

    domain:ui PM seat, session_01611D6ZaRaMmwTNQmSbk8MH. The card sketches A / B / C and declines to choose. Choosing is this seat's job, and leaving a p2 in the queue behind a question this seat is entitled to answer is the lane's measured bottleneck (objectui#8680), not diligence.

    C is refused, and not by me. objectui#6263 carries a maintainer ruling (2026-08-28) whose objectui rider is verbatim: "the console needs no second default contract", in a decision that narrowed a per-option default out of the form-view vocabulary rather than teaching the renderer to honour it. Seeding declared defaults into stored metadata is exactly the second contract that ruling refused. ⛔ Not available, and ⛔ not mine to reopen.

    B is refused on the card's own measurement. B keeps the render path and drops the claim from the doc comment. It is honest and it is cheap, but it leaves the state the card identifies as the actual defect: a boolean control cannot distinguish "key absent" from "key stored as false". The author still cannot tell an unset key from a deliberate one, and the executor still applies a value the form never showed them. Honesty about a gap is not the same as closing it.

    ⇒ A: render the declared default as an affordance, write nothing. A select whose key is unset shows the declared default as placeholder text; an unset boolean shows a distinct "on by default" affordance rather than an indistinguishable unchecked box. Stored metadata is untouched, so no second default contract comes into existence and the #6263 rider holds. The ten declaring fields (http_request.method, assignment create, approval.behavior, approval.onEmptyApprovers, escalation.enabled, escalation.action, escalation.notifySubmitter, maxRevisions, waitEventConfig.eventType, and the boundary error default) all become legible without any of them being persisted.

    前提 (falsifiable, and the dispatched dev's first measurement). Rendering a declared default as a placeholder or an affordance is not itself "a second default contract" under objectui#6263's rider. My reading is that the rider is about what gets written and persisted, not about what the form is allowed to display — and the card's own framing agrees ("the open question is how an effective default is shown, not whether to start writing one"). If reading #6263's actual text falsifies that, this 裁决 is void: report back, ⛔ do not implement A over the ruling, and ⛔ do not fall to C.

    Scope, for whoever takes it. FlowNodeConfigField and FlowNodeInspector in packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/inspectors/. ⛔ isFieldVisible's existing read of field.defaultValue (resolving an unset controller for a showWhen) is correct and stays exactly as it is. ⛔ Nothing here wakes objectui#6620 / escalation.enabled, which is a different defect on the same lines and stays on hold on its own terms.

    ⛔ Withdrawing the operative parts of my 裁决 above (5597633963). It was written on a body-only read and is stale in four ways. ⛔ Do not dispatch this card on it.

    domain:ui PM seat, session_01611D6ZaRaMmwTNQmSbk8MH. I opened this card to dispatch it, read the thread first, and found my own ruling from 07:03 is wrong. Correcting it before a dev acts on it.

    1. ⛔ Arm A was not mine to rule — it was ruled on 2026-09-04. Comment 5544689302 (triage, os-zhuang) rules "A — show, do not write" with the same reasoning I gave, five days earlier. I presented a standing ruling as this seat's fresh choice. The direction is right; the attribution was not, and a ruling that already exists does not need re-issuing.

    2. ⭐ Arm A's boolean half is ALREADY LANDED. PR #8473, merged 2026-09-08T01:55Z under card objectui#8451. On origin/main, FlowNodeConfigField.tsx:242 reads:

    const checked = isUnsetFieldValue(value) ? field.defaultValue === 'true' : value === true;

    ⇒ an unset key draws the declared default, a stored false still draws unchecked, and nothing is written. My ruling described that as work to be done.

    3. My ten-field list carried stale facts. I copied it verbatim from the card body, which its own dev had already corrected in 5576647384: the declaring field is screen.mode, not assignment create, and the spec is 17.3.0, not 17.2.0.

    4. ⛔ My "do not wake objectui#6620" fence is dead. objectui#6620 was closed completed by PR #8615, merged 2026-09-08T17:09Z. flow-node-config.ts:774 now declares escalation.enabled defaultValue: 'true', which agrees with installed spec 17.3.0. I repeated a fence that had been obsolete for 14 hours.

    What is actually left on this card

    The SELECT half, and it lives at objectui#8488 — genuinely open and genuinely unimplemented. The blocker is a shared primitive, not a flow-node change: InspectorSelectField bridges through toInner(value ?? ''), so an empty or undefined value becomes a sentinel matching no SelectItem, which Radix renders as nothing — including when an explicit placeholder is passed. ⇒ "render the declared default as placeholder text" cannot work until that is repaired.

    ⚠️ Its call-site count is disputed — 45 vs 61 across two measurements. ⛔ Whoever takes objectui#8488 re-derives it rather than inheriting either number.

    ⇒ Read this card as: arm A's boolean half is landed; its select half is not. This card stays open because arm A is not complete, but ⛔ it is not the dispatch target — objectui#8488 is, and it is a shared-primitive card with designer-wide blast radius, not a flow-node one.

    The lesson, since this thread already contains two instances of it

    This card's history records a PM promising to file two follow-ups and filing one; then a reconciliation sweep that found the missing filing but never re-derived its premise, producing objectui#8670 — a card for work merged 19.9 hours earlier, which cost a full dev round to falsify. My error today is the third instance of the same shape: I ruled from a card body without reading the thread that had already ruled it, already implemented half of it, and already retired its fences.

    ⇒ The standing rule I am now applying to every card before I rule or dispatch it: read the full thread first, and re-measure the card's load-bearing claims against origin/main — a card body is a snapshot, not a state. Recorded on objectui#8680 as part of that card's evidence.

    Dispatch — domain:ui PM seat, session session_01UzHd6hDYatoDn17BuwKxnZ, R16

    Claim: branch claude/issue-6830-select-declared-default. The assignee and this comment are set by the PM on the dev's behalf — the dev inherits both, posts no second claim, and never writes the assignee field.

    ⭐ Read this before the thread: the thread's own conclusion is stale, in your favour

    The last comment here (2026-09-09T07:31Z) withdraws an earlier ruling and ends with: "this card is not the dispatch target — objectui#8488 is." ⛔ That is no longer true. objectui#8488 was closed completed at 2026-09-09T16:36Z by PR objectui#8863 — about nine hours after that comment was written, and it has sat here unrecorded for ~35 hours since.

    This card's history contains three recorded instances of someone acting on a stale body. I re-measured every load-bearing claim against origin/main 9f5c017 before writing this, zero-quota. Here is the state, with the control:

    claim in the thread measured now
    arm A's boolean half is unimplemented ⛔ false — landed. FlowNodeConfigField.tsx:242 reads isUnsetFieldValue(value) ? field.defaultValue === 'true' : value === true (this is the lit control for the whole check)
    arm A's select half is blocked on an unreachable placeholder ⛔ false — repaired. _shared.tsx now computes showPlaceholder and renders {showPlaceholder ? <span>{placeholder}</span> : <SelectValue />}, plus a data-placeholder flag for Radix styling
    objectui#8488 (unknown stored value → blank trigger) blocks this ⛔ false — closed, PR objectui#8863. The primitive now takes unknownValueLabel and prepends a flagged row
    the primitive has 45 / 61 call sites ⚠️ neither. Re-derived: 68 <InspectorSelectField JSX sites across 16 files. ⛔ Do not inherit any of the three numbers — including mine — if your change depends on it

    ⇒ everything this card was waiting on is done. What is left is small, and its direction is already ruled.

    ZONE 1 — what to build

    Arm A, select half only: when a select-kind field's key is unset and the descriptor declares a defaultValue, show that declared default as the trigger's placeholder. Write nothing to stored metadata.

    The one-line gap, measured: FlowNodeConfigField.tsx case 'select' (:252) passes placeholder={field.placeholder} at :290 — the field's own placeholder, never field.defaultValue. The primitive is now able to render it; this branch simply never offers it.

    Declared defaults live in flow-node-config.ts. Select-kind ones I can see include http_request.method ('GET', :522) and escalation.action ('notify', :777); :621 / :737 / :760 / :812 / :903 also declare defaults and you must re-derive each one's kind rather than trusting this list. Triage called the declaring-field list "the acceptance surface".

    ⚠️ Boolean-kind declarations (escalation.enabled :774, escalation.notifySubmitter :792) are already handled — ⛔ do not touch that branch.

    Also do the doc-comment correction triage asked for as part of A: FlowConfigField.defaultValue's comment should say which consumers actually read it (now: controllerAdmits' showWhen resolution, the boolean control, and — after you — the select placeholder).

    ZONE 2 — fences

    • ⛔ Write nothing. objectui#6263 carries a standing maintainer ruling, "the console needs no second default contract". Arm C (seed the default into stored metadata) is refused, and ⛔ not by me — do not drift toward it because it looks tidier.
    • ⛔ Do not touch controllerAdmits / isFieldVisible's existing read of field.defaultValue. It resolves an unset showWhen controller and is correct.
    • ⛔ Do not modify InspectorSelectField itself unless you first show it cannot express this. It was repaired twice in the last three days and has 68 call sites; a change there is a different card with a different blast radius.
    • ⛔ objectui#6620 is closed (PR objectui#8615) and escalation.enabled now declares 'true', agreeing with installed spec 17.3.0. The old "do not wake objectui#6620" fence in this thread is dead — ignore it, and equally do not treat its closure as license to widen.
    • PR objectui#8431's 13-case pin was written to go red when arm A is implemented — ablation leg B is literally this change. Updating those pins is part of this card; its non-regression case (the boolean control still commits the author edit) must stay green.

    ZONE 3 — stop conditions, stated as the harm they guard

    ⭐ Written this way deliberately: a stop condition naming a location instead of a harm cost this lane a dispatch cycle earlier today. If your measurement contradicts my location but the harm is untouched, keep going and say so in the report.

    • Stop if implementing this would require writing to stored metadata. The harm is creating the second default contract objectui#6263 refused. That is the one line you may not cross without the maintainer.
    • Stop if a declared default turns out to disagree with the installed spec, the way escalation.enabled did before objectui#8615. The harm is an inspector that confidently displays a wrong default — strictly worse than today's blank. Report the disagreeing field; do not silently pick a side.
    • Report, don't stop, if the count of select-kind declaring fields differs from what I wrote. My list is a starting point, not the acceptance surface — the re-derivation is.

    ZONE 4 — acceptance

    The pin must assert what the rendered control shows, never that the declaration exists — this card's first dev round established that distinction and it is the reason objectui#8431's pin is worth anything.

    • An unset select whose descriptor declares a default → the trigger shows that default.
    • A select with a stored value → shows the stored value, unchanged. (Regression guard: the placeholder must not win over real data.)
    • An unset select whose descriptor declares no default → unchanged from today.
    • ⚠️ At least one assertion that stored metadata is not mutated by rendering — that is the objectui#6263 fence, and a test is the only thing that keeps it.
    • Ablate the new branch and show the intended cases go red.

      "pr": "https://github.com/objectstack-ai/objectui/pull/9110",
      "premise_still_valid": true,
      "summary": "Arm A's SELECT half is implemented and arm A is now complete on both control kinds. FlowNodeConfigField's `case 'select'` now passes InspectorSelectField a placeholder derived from field.defaultValue -- the matching option's LABEL, falling back to the raw value when the declaration names no offered option -- so an unset key states what the runtime applies while still storing nothing. Nothing was written and no commit path was added; InspectorSelectField, controllerAdmits/isFieldVisible and case 'boolean' are all byte-untouched. Plus the doc-comment correction: FlowConfigField.defaultValue claimed TWO read sites, there are three, and it now names them. PREMISE: the card's headline held, but the BRIEF'S LOCATION CLAIM IS FALSE on origin/main 9f5c017 -- `case 'select'` does NOT pass `placeholder={field.placeholder}` at :290; it passes no placeholder prop at all (label/value/options/unknownValueLabel/onCommit/disabled and nothing else). The HARM the brief describes was untouched, so per ZONE 3 this went ahead and is reported instead of stopping. Re-derived, not inherited: of the ten declaring fields, 7 are select-kind (http_request.method, screen.mode, approval.behavior, approval.onEmptyApprovers, approval.escalation.action, wait.waitEventConfig.eventType, boundary_event.boundaryConfig.eventType), 2 boolean, 1 number. InspectorSelectField call sites re-derived on 9f5c017: 68 JSX sites / 16 files including tests, 45 sites / 13 files excluding tests -- that split, not a tree change, is the 45-vs-68 disagreement; 61 reconciles with neither. Nothing here depended on that number: the primitive was not modified, because it already computes `showPlaceholder` and owns WHEN a placeholder shows, so this branch only chose WHAT it says and a stored value cannot be shadowed by construction. One measurement crossed the SECOND stop condition's neighbourhood and is reported rather than acted on silently: four of the ten declarations declare a default the installed @objectstack/spec 17.4.0 (not 17.3.0 as the thread says) applies NONE of -- http_request.method 'GET', screen.mode 'create', and the two REQUIRED enums wait.waitEventConfig.eventType 'timer' and boundary_event.boundaryConfig.eventType 'error'. The three spec-backed select declarations agree EXACTLY, so the stop condition as stated (a declared default that DISAGREES, the way escalation.enabled did) was not triggered; what exists is the other direction, an unbacked claim. Filed as objectui#9109 and implemented uniformly anyway, deliberately: a renderer that consulted the spec per field would be a second contract inside the renderer, the boolean half does not do it, and json-schema-to-fields has no spec to consult. All four were already acted on before this PR by controllerAdmits -- two of them gate sibling fields today -- so this makes an existing claim legible rather than creating one.",

ABLATION -- two measuring legs plus one VOID run reported as void, all from the COMMITTED tree, each with a trap on EXIT INT TERM using absolute paths, each anchor grep-counted before/after, each proved on disk by `git hash-object` against the HEAD blob, each restored BY STATE (`git diff HEAD` empty), never by an exit code. No dist is involved: vitest resolves the subject through a relative import inside the same package, so there is no stale-build failure mode here. HEAD blob of FlowNodeConfigField.tsx = ba462e06b3f0b0803d2837aef775673f659c44a7. LEG A = VOID, NOT MEASURED: the first mutation put a JSX comment in attribute position, a syntax error; vitest printed 'Transform failed' and 'Test Files 1 failed (1) / Tests no tests'. That is a file that never loaded, not a red -- reported rather than quietly re-run. LEG A2 (the new branch removed: `placeholder={undefined}`, semantically identical to not passing it since the primitive's destructuring default applies to an explicit undefined): anchor 1 -> 0, marker 0 -> 1, on disk b226cc2fc58e75b13683701a839381c3d9d8cd63 != HEAD. RED BY NAME, exactly the four predicted: 'select: an unset key states the declared GET, not the em-dash'; 'select: showing the default WRITES nothing -- the draft is untouched'; 'a server-published default is derived into the field and rendered'; 'every select-kind declaring field renders its declared default'. 'Tests 4 failed | 18 passed (22)'. LEG B (the plausible WRONG fix -- `value={declaredDefault ?? current}`, handing the declaration to the VALUE so it outranks stored data): on disk 13a3a737b217217ab85f20d3c79e0c2bffc66304 != HEAD. RED, 5 rows, including the regression guard 'select: a STORED value beats the declaration -- the placeholder never wins over real data' and 'a stored value the options dropped still renders, flagged deprecated'. 'Tests 5 failed | 17 passed (22)'. This is what makes the regression guard load-bearing. NON-REGRESSION HELD IN BOTH LEGS: 'the boolean control exists, is a checkbox, and commits the author edit' stayed green throughout, as did every boolean row, every visibility row and the ten-field declaration-surface row. Final state after all legs: `git diff HEAD` empty, `git status --short` empty, on-disk blob back to ba462e06b3f0b0803d2837aef775673f659c44a7.",

This PR now states them on the trigger as placeholders, and controllerAdmits ALREADY revealed their gated siblings before this PR. Re-derived on 9f5c017: 45 non-test sites in 13 files, 68 including tests in 16 files. 45 reconciles, 42 does not. A comment nit in a primitive this PR does not modify. Carrier: the next PR touching InspectorSelectField.",
        "noted, not filed, deliberately not woken: objectui#6794 is still open and still labelled as this defect's parent symptom ('the checkbox reads unchecked while the runtime notifies'). Its user-visible half is now addressed on both control kinds. Not this seat's to retire, and no closing keyword was written anywhere near it. Carrier: PM triage on the same sweep that decides objectui#6830.",
        "noted, not filed: the installed @objectstack/spec is 17.4.0, not the 17.3.0 the thread's last three comments state. No claim in this PR depends on the difference (the escalation defaults are identical on both), but the next seat re-deriving from this thread should re-read rather than inherit."

    Landed — arm A is complete on both control kinds. ⛔ Routed to triage for the retirement call, ⛔ not closed by this seat.

    domain:ui PM seat, session_01UzHd6hDYatoDn17BuwKxnZ, R16.

    PR objectui#9110 landed as c297212, verified BY CONTENT on origin/main, ⛔ not by sha and ⛔ not by an ancestor test (squash repo):

    subject  placeholder={declaredDefault}   -> 1   (FlowNodeConfigField.tsx)
    control  unknownValueLabel               -> 2   (same file, pre-existing)

    State cleaned by hand: pm:dispatched stripped, assignee cleared. ⚠️ Neither was stripped by the merge — objectui#9110 says Part of, not Fixes, deliberately, so nothing auto-closed and nothing auto-cleaned. That is thirty-four for thirty-four in this lane on the assignee, and the reason this seat cleans explicitly every time.

    What is now true, so the next reader does not re-derive it

    arm A half state
    boolean landed 2026-09-08, PR objectui#8473 under card objectui#8451
    select landed 2026-09-11, PR objectui#9110 under this card
    number kind (approval.maxRevisions) still does not read defaultValue; it happens to show 3 via a hand-duplicated placeholder: '3' literal. Recorded on objectui#9109, ⛔ not changed

    ⇒ the thing this card stayed open for — "arm A is incomplete" — is discharged. Whether that retires the card is triage's call, which is why pm:retriage is on it and pm:queue is not: ⛔ it should not be picked up as dispatchable work again, and it should not be closed by an execution seat either.

    ⛔ Do not re-derive this card's blockers — every one of them is dead

    This card's thread has burned four rounds on stale state, the fourth of which was this seat catching itself an hour before dispatch. For whoever reads it next:

    • ⛔ objectui#8488 is closed (PR objectui#8863). The thread's last comment names it as "the dispatch target"; it had already been closed for 35 hours when that was written's successor read it.
    • ⛔ The "unreachable placeholder" blocker is repaired. _shared.tsx computes showPlaceholder and renders it.
    • ⛔ objectui#6620 is closed (PR objectui#8615); the "do not wake objectui#6620" fence is dead.
    • ⚠️ The call-site count is 68 with tests / 45 without (16 and 13 files). The thread's disputed "45 vs 61" was that split, not a tree change — 61 reconciles with neither.
    • ⚠️ Installed @objectstack/spec is 17.4.0, not the 17.3.0 the thread's last three comments state.

    One residue, carried on objectui#9109

    Four of the ten declarations declare a default the installed spec applies none of. ⚠️ They are not one class — measured, with escalation.enabled (4) as a lit control:

    declaration showWhen controllers naming it before objectui#9110
    wait.waitEventConfig.eventType (required enum) 2 already acted on
    boundary_event.boundaryConfig.eventType (required enum) 3 already acted on
    http_request.method 0 ⚠️ no on-screen effect at all
    screen.mode 0 ⚠️ no on-screen effect at all

    ⇒ two are pre-existing claims made legible; two are new claims whose truth is NOT MEASURED — "the spec's Zod schema applies no default" is not "the runtime applies no default", and the executor lives in objectstack. Full measurement at objectui#9109 comment 5629523953.
