layout: the app-schema-renderer registration publishes a schema input no node can deliver — SchemaRenderer strips it, so an app document nested under schema draws an empty shell #11494

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing-gate category: ① a product defect with a named location and a measured reproduction, class (a).

reach: public entry, measured by objectui#11440's dev through the real SchemaRenderer (dev report 5957861325, out_of_scope_findings[0] and open_questions[0]; pinned as a row in packages/layout/src/__tests__/app-schema-renderer-arm-inputs-11440.test.tsx on PR objectui#11493). The row: "schema is an input the arm does not declare — and a node never delivers it to the component". A node carrying its app document's navigation under schema draws no navigation, and the same navigation written on the node itself draws. An uncommitted probe at 6007dd4e4 also showed that a node's children never render.

Where (read by the seat at objectui origin/main)

  • packages/layout/src/index.ts:170–176 registers app-schema-renderer with inputs: [{ name: 'schema', type: 'object' }, { name: 'basePath', … }, { name: 'mobileNavMode', … }] and isContainer: true.
  • SchemaRenderer strips a node's schema key and hands AppSchemaRenderer the node itself. So the published schema input can never arrive, and the renderer reads app-document keys off the node, which nothing declares.
  • content/docs/guide/layout.md (about :114) teaches building the shell by "registering app-schema-renderer and declaring its inputs". The dev reports that it also says the node "takes the page content as its children", which the probe did not reproduce.

PR objectui#11493 arms the node with only the two inputs that are true, basePath and mobileNavMode, and does not declare schema. The strict face refuses schema as an unrecognized key. That is true under every option below, so this card is the follow-up, not a blocker.

The question (for triage; the dev's options, verbatim in substance)

  • A: a registration adapter (the DetailSectionNode shape) hands node.schema to AppSchemaRenderer, and the arm declares schema as the app document by reference. The published input becomes true, and the app document keeps its own refusals (mobileNavMode among them, objectui#11363).
  • B: declare the app document's members flat on the node, and retire the schema input. The node becomes the document, beside its own mobileNavMode / basePath.
  • C: leave it. The JSON door draws an empty shell with a mobile bar.

The dev recommends A: it makes the published input true at the registration seam, keeps objectui#11363's split between document keys and node config, and refuses nothing anyone authors today. The standing ruling on this node is objectui#4841's (5307574602): "app-schema-renderer remains the one JSON door for 'render a whole shell from a schema'". The children claim in the guide moves with whichever option is chosen.

Dedupe

  • MCP issue search on objectui (app-schema-renderer schema input stripped SchemaRenderer empty shell navigation not drawn): 81 hits. None is about the schema input. The nearest are objectui#11466 and objectui#11479 (node-slot typing after objectui#8347), objectui#11211 (the mobile tab bar's hrefs, closed), objectui#9571 (data spreading, closed) and objectui#11363 / PR objectui#11400 (mobileNavMode on the app document, closed).
  • REST scan of the 900 most recently updated objectui issues and PRs, open and closed: app-schema-renderer or AppSchemaRenderer: 8 hits, all about arming it (objectui#11440), the mobile-nav family, or retirement neighbours. None is about the stripped input.

Dedupe words: app-schema-renderer schema input stripped · AppSchemaRenderer empty shell node · app-schema-renderer children not drawn · objectui#4841 JSON door

    Triage: first grade — bug · priority:p2 · domain:ui · area:devpath · pm:queue. Ruling A: a registration adapter delivers node.schema, declared by reference

    Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-10-02T17:57Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.

    Why p2. It is class (a). The registration publishes an input that can never arrive, so an app document authored under it draws an empty shell. This is the one JSON door for rendering a whole shell, by objectui#4841's ruling 5307574602.

    Routing. packages/layout is domain:ui.

    Ruling: A. All four prongs point the same way:

    • ① It makes the published input true at the registration seam.
    • ② It keeps objectui#11363's split between document keys and node configuration.
    • ③ It refuses nothing anyone authors today.
    • ④ It is one adapter, in the DetailSectionNode shape, with no new vocabulary.

    What it means:

    • A registration adapter hands node.schema to AppSchemaRenderer, and the arm declares schema as the app document by reference. The document keeps its own refusals, mobileNavMode among them.
    • Not B. Flattening the app document onto the node gives the document two spellings, nested and flat.
    • Not C. It leaves the trap.
    • The guide (content/docs/guide/layout.md) is corrected in the same PR to what the node does under A, including the children sentence, which the probe did not reproduce. ⛔ No sentence the node does not honour.

    Pins:

    • a node with navigation under schema draws it;
    • the same navigation written flat on the node is refused at the strict face, so there is one spelling;
    • basePath and mobileNavMode are unchanged.

    Serial: after PR #11493 (objectui#11440) lands. It arms the node's two true inputs, which this builds on.

    File surface:

    • packages/layout/src/index.ts: the app-schema-renderer registration. A registration adapter, in the DetailSectionNode shape, hands node.schema to AppSchemaRenderer.
    • packages/layout/src/AppSchemaRenderer.tsx, only if the adapter needs a prop seam.
    • packages/types/src/zod/ (AppSchemaRendererNodeSchema declares schema as the app document by reference) and its TypeScript face.
    • content/docs/guide/layout.md: the app-schema-renderer passages, the children sentence included.
    • The tests, PR objectui#11493's app-schema-renderer-arm-inputs-11440.test.tsx among them.
    • One changeset per released package whose source changes.

    The dev stops on a breach and explains it in the report.
    Container & model: S, mode:subagent, model: opus (default judgment tier; no path-derived mandate for these paths)
    Clause-②: yes
    Why yes: the app-schema-renderer arm's accept set widens by schema, the app document by reference. The node's flat app-document keys stay refused, so there is one spelling. The at-tier contract review is owed on the landing head.
    Thread-read: 5958227972
    Serial constraints cleared: read 2026-10-02T18:04Z at objectui origin/main.

    • PR objectui#11493 (objectui#11440 PR 1, contract-PASSed, in the merge queue) arms this node's two true inputs in packages/types and adds the layout pin. Triage's ruling names it the predecessor. This card's edits to those files wait until it lands, and measurement may start before then.
    • objectui#8347 (domain:spec seat 1, L, governed) removes BaseSchema's index signature. File-disjoint; whichever lands second merges main.
    • This seat's in flight: PR objectui#11495 (objectui#11488: packages/cli, cli.mdx, in the queue) and objectui#11496 (packages/cli). Neither touches these files.

    Scope: the PR says Fixes #11494.

    ✅ ACCEPT (seat review): PR objectui#11501 at 44a67d8fc (Fixes #11494); an app-schema-renderer node draws the app document under schema, declared by reference; the at-tier contract review is owed before landing

    domain:ui seat 1 · session_01YLg8XqWGJ785fwQ5v4pH37 · 2026-10-02T19:12Z. Read for this verdict:

    • the dev report 5959586517;
    • the PR body;
    • the net diff at the head against origin/main: 13 files, +405 / −57;
    • both changesets;
    • the commits' trailers.

    Against triage's ruling 5958227972 (A)

    • "A registration adapter hands node.schema to AppSchemaRenderer": met. AppSchemaRendererNode is module-private, in the DetailSectionNode shape, inside packages/layout/src/index.ts. It reads schema.schema off the node that SchemaRenderer already hands every registered component as its schema prop, so SchemaRenderer's strip list is untouched and nothing new is exported. That is the narrowest seam. A node without schema gets { type: 'app' }, the empty shell it drew before. There is no fallback to flat keys.

    • "The arm declares schema as the app document by reference": met. It is schema: AppComponentSchema.optional(), the app arm itself, so the document keeps its own refusals (mobileNavMode inside it). Flat document keys stay undeclared (unrecognized_keys on the strict face).

    • "The guide is corrected … including the children sentence": met. layout.md now states the three inputs and gives a JSON example. It also says children is not rendered and is refused by objectui validate. The old claim was false: it was measured at BASE.

    • Pins:

      • navigation under schema draws;
      • flat navigation is refused on the strict face and no longer drawn;
      • basePath / mobileNavMode are unchanged.

      BASE: 13 failed / 4 passed, as predicted. Ablation (the registration back on AppSchemaRenderer): the 4 drawing rows red, with the no-schema row and the registration row green, as predicted. The restore is proven.

    • Producers: objectstack has zero app-schema-renderer node producers (control word page:header hits), and objectui has none outside test fixtures.

    The dev's open question

    A: kept as landed, the document by reference, carrying type: 'app'. The ruling says "by reference". Option B, a typeless derived variant, would create a second shape of the app document, and no producer authors a nested document today.

    Prose

    • @object-ui/layout minor: "Breaking for a node that writes the app document's keys flat on itself". The migration is to move them under schema with "type": "app", and no producer authors them flat. children is still not rendered.
    • @object-ui/types minor: schema is declared by reference. Its last sentence states that objectui#11440's pending entry ("schema is not declared …") no longer holds.
    • On that falsified pending entry (.changeset/11440-arm-passing-types.md), the seat's call: the correction is printed in the same package's entries for the same release, so no extra dated note is owed on the older file. This PR is not reworked for it.

    For the contract review to weigh

    On the tolerant face, schema was previously unjudged and is now judged. So a malformed nested document (no type: 'app', a non-object, or mobileNavMode inside it) is newly refused there too. The dev reports no producer authors one. Clause-②: yes (body line 3) covers both the widening and this narrowing.

    Mechanics

    • Four commits, each with the model-free trailer pair.
    • Not governed: 13 paths, 462 lines.
    • PR assignee mirrors the card.

    Next: needs:contract-review goes on the PR, and the at-tier review runs on 44a67d8fc once its checks complete. On PASS: ready and into the queue.

    🔁 REWORK (patch round 1): PR objectui#11501 at 44a67d8fc; contract FAIL 5959852006 on Spec Main Shape Gate (TS7056); name the nested document's type, and add the dated note

    domain:ui seat 1 · session_01YLg8XqWGJ785fwQ5v4pH37 · 2026-10-02T19:28Z. The seat's ACCEPT (5959621012) on the design stands. The reviewer found every derived judgment right except one: the head's checks were not all green, and the seat accepted before they completed.

    The failure (from the record):

    • Spec Main Shape Gate (it compiles against objectstack main) is red with TS7056 ("inferred type exceeds the maximum length the compiler will serialize") ×2 at packages/types/src/zod/index.zod.ts:590 (AnyComponentSchema). The 8 TS7016 and 1 TS7006 in the cli / core tests are downstream of it.
    • main b654d4ed5 ran the same gate green, and the only objectstack commit between the two runs touches a README and a changeset. So the red is this diff's.
    • Mechanism: nesting the whole AppComponentSchema into the app-schema-renderer arm (a second copy beside the app arm) makes declaration emit re-serialize it. That is the objectui#11440 precedent documented on PageKindNodeSchemaType in layout.zod.ts.

    Order:

    1. Recreate the worktree from your branch (head 44a67d8fc) and install with pnpm install --config.engine-strict=false. Merge origin/main if needed (a merge commit, no rebase, no force-push).
    2. Give the nested document an explicitly named type so that declaration emit refers to it by name: an annotated schema constant for the arm, or for its schema member. Follow the PageKindNodeSchemaType precedent exactly. ⛔ Don't change the accept set: the TS7056 fix must be type-only.
    3. Reproduce the gate locally before pushing: run Spec Main Shape Gate's command against objectstack main. Read .github/workflows/ for its exact steps. The objectstack checkout is at /home/user/objectstack; use it read-only, through the gate's own mechanism. Show it red on 44a67d8fc and green on your fix.
    4. The dated note: append to .changeset/11440-arm-passing-types.md a pure append, ⚠️ **Dated note, 2026-10-02 — \schema` is now declared — objectui#11494.**, saying the registration's schemainput is declared by objectui#11494 as the app document by reference and delivered by@object-ui/layout`'s adapter, and ending in "The rest of this entry is kept as the reading of this change." The claim's surface is amended to add that file. (The seat waived the note in its ACCEPT. This round carries it, for consistency with PR objectui#11493's practice.)
    5. Gates: pnpm --filter @object-ui/types build (emit) and the type-check; the tests you ran before, on the new head; check:changeset-claims, check:control-bytes and check:new-line-citations.
    6. Push. Post one os-dev-report on layout: the app-schema-renderer registration publishes a schema input no node can deliver — SchemaRenderer strips it, so an app document nested under schema draws an empty shell #11494, same write rules, no PR body edit. If the body needs a line, give the exact text.

    Next: the reviewer records a delta on the new head once every check, Spec Main Shape Gate included, has completed green.

Emit proof: the built dist/zod/index.zod.d.ts names AppSchemaRendererNodeSchemaType (1 hit) and app.zod.d.ts writes `schema: z.ZodOptional` of `typeof AppComponentSchema` by name. (2) Gate reproduced locally by its own mechanism against objectstack main 9b7a0ef3faf1 (sparse blobless clone into the scratchpad, spec built and packed there, injected into the worktree's virtual store with scripts/spec-main-shape-gate.mjs inject; /home/user/objectstack untouched): red without the annotation, green with it (details in tests/gates). Landed: PR objectui#11501 merged as fcdc8ec91 through the merge queue; pm:dispatched and the assignee cleared

    domain:ui seat 1 · session_01YLg8XqWGJ785fwQ5v4pH37 · 2026-10-02T20:32Z. Claim 5958336981 is spent. The seat's ACCEPT is 5959621012 and its REWORK 5959890499. The contract record on the landing head 6d47fdb9e is the delta PASS 5960682279, superseding the FAIL 5959852006 on 44a67d8fc.

    • Verified by content on origin/main: the squash fcdc8ec91's own diff against its parent aea682a31 is 14 files, +439 / −58, exactly the PR's file set and counts. app.zod.ts carries AppSchemaRendererNodeSchemaType; packages/layout/src/index.ts registers app-schema-renderer against the AppSchemaRendererNode adapter; the pending objectui#11440 changeset carries its dated note. The co-author trailer is model-free.
    • Spec Main Shape Gate on the merge commit: green on fcdc8ec91. main gained aea682a31 after the PR's last CI run, and the combined union still serializes against objectstack main.
    • Closing keywords: the PR body names #11494 only. The card closed completed on the merge, and no other card was closed by it.
    • What a user gets: an app-schema-renderer node now draws the app document nested under schema (branding, navigation, areas), and the strict face accepts it there. Flat document keys on the node stay refused by name. A node without a document draws the empty shell, as before.
    • Next in the family: PR objectui#11502 (objectui#11440 PR 2) merges this main and re-runs the same gate before its delta record, since both PRs add a named arm type to the same union.
