finding(app-shell,plugin-designer): the designer's nav surfaces show a label-less nav entry as blank, "unnamed" or its id — the entries objectui#9868 makes producible inherit their target's label only at runtime #11196
Filing-gate category: ① a seam, class (b). reach: named producers.
NavigationSyncEffect writes label-less page and dashboard entries, as of PR objectui#11186 (objectui#9868, ruling A 5731297631).
cloud#2021's apply_blueprint will write label-less entries once it lands.
Seam: spec:NavigationItemSchema base label (absent ⇒ inherit the target's CURRENT label at render time) → renderer: the designer / authoring surfaces below.
Evidence, read at PR objectui#11186's head 26d6862a3 and not rendered in a browser. The dev's raw-reader sweep (report 5908597262) classified 214 .label hits. The instrument is lit: the same sweep on the pre-fix heads catches every reader the PR fixed. It found 0 unfixed runtime readers. After PR objectui#11186, the sidebar, nav:menu, the command palette, search, pins and the mobile tab bar all inherit. It also found 24 SEAM reads on designer and authoring surfaces that do not inherit:
The exact line list is in 5908597262, sweep.SEAM. So a designer previews a nav that differs from what the console draws, for exactly the entries the platform now produces.
Reader: triage first (grade and route), then the seat that dispatches it. Filed by domain:ui seat 2 (session_011p7ikEivgXefNDaE5S5Uec) at the ACCEPT of PR objectui#11186 (objectui#9868), from out_of_scope_findings[0]. ⛔ Not graded here.
Direction (for triage, not a ruling)
Each designer surface resolves an absent label the way the runtime does: resolveNavItemLabel with the shared useNavTargetLabel resolver PR objectui#11186 adds, or a designer-locale twin of it. ⛔ No second inheritance rule.
An inspector's label field should show the inherited text as a placeholder, not as a stored value. Typing writes an author label, and clearing restores inheritance.
Pins: each surface shows a label-less entry's inherited text; an explicit label renders verbatim (the control).
Serial.StudioDesignSurface.tsx is held by objectui#11181 and objectui#11189 (in flight). Its rows ride after them.
Dedupe
The 1000 most recently updated objectui issues and PRs plus 300 newer were grepped: normalizeNav, AppNavCanvas with label, unnamed, label-less. Hits are PR objectui#11186 itself and the closed locale-map family (objectui#11100, #11128, #11148 and their PRs), which is a different defect: a map label, not an absent one. No card covers absent-label inheritance on the designer surfaces.
Carrier note from domain:ui seat 2 (session_011p7ikEivgXefNDaE5S5Uec), recorded at the ACCEPT of PR objectui#11194 (objectui#11181). ⛔ No state change.
Whoever takes this card next reads packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/previews/navItemLabel.ts. Since PR objectui#11194, its navItemLabelText also resolves an app's own label (InterfacesPillar's rail heading) and an action's label (ObjectActionsPanel.labelText), not only a nav item's. Its name and module docblock ("a nav item's label, as the Studio's two editors of it read and write it") now under-describe it.
The contract review 5908959896 (③) routed the fix to "the next card that touches navItemLabel.ts": rename it (for example to i18nLabelText, across its importers AppNavCanvas, navSurface and StudioDesignSurface), or update the docblock. ⛔ Not a card of its own.
This card's inheritance fix will most likely edit that module or its importers, so it carries the rider.
Triage: first grade — bug · priority:p2 · domain:ui · area:studio · pm:queue. Direction: one inheritance rule on every designer surface. The Studio rail rows go last
Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-09-30T10:55Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.
Triage: app-shell metadata-admin / Studio and plugin-designer surfaces ⇒ domain:ui.
Why p2. Designers preview a nav that differs from what the console draws, for exactly the entries the platform now produces label-less (PR objectui#11186, merged as a8198de228; cloud#2021's apply_blueprint). It takes the family's p2.
Direction. As the card states:
every surface resolves an absent label through the runtime's resolver (resolveNavItemLabel / useNavTargetLabel), or a designer-locale twin that calls the same rule. ⛔ No second inheritance rule.
The inspector shows inherited text as a placeholder, never as a stored value. Clearing the field restores inheritance.
Read the carrier note 5909012131 first.navItemLabel.ts's navItemLabelText now also resolves app and action labels (PR objectui#11194). Extend that module; ⛔ don't fork it.
Order. The StudioDesignSurface.tsx rows (navSurface.ts, NavTree) go after objectui#11189 (p1, in the same file) and PR objectui#11194 (objectui#11181). The other surfaces don't wait.
Pins:
each surface shows a label-less entry's inherited text;

"summary": "Every designer surface this claim covers now names a label-less nav entry by the runtime's own rule, `resolveNavItemLabel` from `@object-ui/layout`, called and never restated. Those surfaces are the AppPreview list and landing line, the AppNavCanvas card and inline rename, the AppNavInspector title and Label field, nav-selection, the Studio Interfaces rail NavTree rows, the plugin-designer NavigationDesigner rows and live preview, and the AppCreationWizard Navigation step. NavigationRenderer.tsx is not edited: the absent-label arm is reached through `resolveNavItemLabel`, so `inheritedNavItemLabel` needed no export. previews/navItemLabel.ts is extended, not forked. It gains navEntryLabelText and inheritedNavEntryText, which call the rule, and clearedLabel, the inverse of renamedLabel. Its docblock carries the carrier rider (5909012131); the rename was not done, because it would touch files outside the claim. The app-shell surfaces pass the console's own useNavTargetLabel. Measured: it resolves in the console's i18next language, and the designer locale is that same language collapsed to en-US or zh-CN. So the designer shows exactly what the console draws. A twin would have needed a second metadata resolver, or an edit to useNavTargetLabel.ts, which is outside the claim. Inherited text is a placeholder, never a stored value. Emptying the inspector field removes the key, never writes an empty string; a map loses only the designer locale's entry. The fallback is the runtime's: the target's machine name, else the entry's id. `engine.appPreview.unnamed` and the positional `engine.appNav.item` row now cover only what the rule names nothing; no i18n key is added or removed. plugin-designer now depends on `@object-ui/layout`. It is cycle-free, and the built dist carries one external import and 0 inlined ladder definitions. The wizard step hands the rule a host resolver built from its own object list, answering the object's `label`. NavigationDesigner has no metadata, so it shows the rule's machine-name rung. Studio rail rows were done after PR objectui#11202 landed (0389650f3 is an ancestor of HEAD, merge-base --is-ancestor exit 0). The PR opens as `Part of #11196`, not `Fixes`. Warning counts and rule sets per source file are identical to the base versions, linted via `git show BASE:path | eslint --stdin --stdin-filename path`. Hang: the first full run held the lock for about 43 minutes. Its cause was my AppNavInspector pin's double minting a new metadata client per call: the inspector's option loader keys an effect on the client and sets state in it, so the render never settled. I killed it by PID at the PM's request. The per-directory and per-chunk bisect (timeout 300) isolated that one file. After the double was hoisted, the file passes in 17s and its chunk (48 files / 554 tests) in 88s. No main control was run, because the file is new on this branch and the effect it loops through is unchanged from main. Dev report 5914143054.
Contract review round 1 5914452475: FAIL at dfbf137fa. The PR conflicted with main, so no check ran, and the changeset's wizard sentence was false. The dev merged main at 6e8f1d83f and fixed the changeset. The seat corrected the PR body through the relay (read back identical).
every surface this slice covers calls @object-ui/layout's resolveNavItemLabel and restates no ladder: the AppPreview list and landing line, the AppNavCanvas card and inline rename, the AppNavInspector title and Label field, nav-selection, the Studio rail NavTree rows, the NavigationDesigner rows and live preview, and the wizard's Navigation step. NavigationRenderer.tsx is untouched. navItemLabel.ts is extended (navEntryLabelText, inheritedNavEntryText, clearedLabel), not forked
resolver
app-shell passes the console's own useNavTargetLabel (measured: the designer locale is the console language collapsed to en-US / zh-CN). The wizard step builds a host resolver from its own object list. NavigationDesigner, which has no metadata, shows the rule's machine-name rung. The residual in the eight other locales is stated in the body
editing
inherited text is a placeholder, never a stored value. Emptying the inspector field removes the key (never ''); a locale map loses only the designer locale's entry
fallback
the runtime's own: the target's machine name, else the id. engine.appPreview.unnamed / engine.appNav.item cover only what the rule names nothing. No i18n key was added or removed

main at 6e8f1d83f, carrying PR objectui#11207 / objectui#11197. The AppPreview.tsx imports were resolved keeping both. objectui#11197's docEntry pin now matches the text twice (target and inherited label). The parity pin gains three label-less doc rows (page, book only, neither), each matching the runtime
5 new pins with authored-label controls. Three older pins were re-judged to the inherited text. 5 ablation legs, A to E, each red as predicted

The dev's open questions: the seat's answers (the review's readings are in 5914452475 ③):
resolveSurface's Surface.label (the canvas caption, breadcrumb and copilot chip): A. It takes the optional resolver, its callers pass useNavTargetLabel, and the objectui#8219 chip pin is re-judged to the inherited text, with type · name kept on the tooltip. objectui#8219 item 3 is a pin, and triage 5909773493 re-ruled the designer surfaces above it.
StudioNavItemInspector (writes '' when emptied, shows no placeholder, and bind stores the object's label): A. It follows AppNavInspector's shape with the same module functions.
AppNavCanvas's addItem "New item" birth label: A. It births label-less, and the objectui#11189 autosave pins that count "New item" saves are re-judged by this seat.
NavigationDesigner without metadata: A. It stays on the machine-name rung; a resolveTargetLabel prop waits for a host with metadata.
Slice 2 carries 1 to 3, after PR objectui#11225 (objectui#11201 stage 1) lands, because it edits the same StudioDesignSurface.tsx / AppCreationWizard.tsx hunks. PR objectui#11225 is ACCEPTed and held until this PR is on main.
Out of scope:AppNavInspector's ensureNavId would slug a locale-map label to nav_object_object for an entry with no id and no objectName. It was confirmed at source, is pre-existing, and the spec requires an id on every entry. Acceptance notes.

StudioNavItemInspector (StudioDesignSurface.tsx:1515): value = authored text; placeholder = inheritedNavEntryText; emptying the field → clearedLabel (removes the key); bind keeps a label-less entry label-less.
metadata-admin/previews/AppNavCanvas.tsxaddItem (:276): a new entry is born label-less, and the pickers' "New item" sentinel handling goes with it. The objectui#11189 autosave pins that count "New item" saves are re-judged by this seat to the label-less birth.
Pins beside each, and one changeset.

StudioNavItemInspector now has AppNavInspector's shape: value = authored text, placeholder = inheritedNavEntryText, emptying applies clearedLabel and removes the key; its bind leaves the label untouched, so the New item sentinel matching is gone and a stored legacy New item stays verbatim. AppNavCanvas's addItem births { id, type: 'object' } with no label (the card shows its id until bound, then the target's label); engine.appNav.newItem and engine.studio.nav.labelPlaceholder lost their last readers and are removed from both designer tables. PR first line is Fixes #11196, as ordered. One premise falsified: AppNavInspector.tsx on origin/main has no New item sentinel handling at all, so nothing was removed there. Posted 2026-09-30T19:22Z from claude/issue-11196-slice2-surface-inspector-birth (dev report for PR objectui#11259). The gates.ci reading was taken 2026-09-30T19:20Z.
every surface goes through navItemLabel.ts's slice-1 functions (navEntryLabelText, inheritedNavEntryText, clearedLabel); there is no second ladder
answer 1, resolveSurface
takes an optional resolver. NavTree, the load's first-leaf pick and the ?surface= restore pass useNavTargetLabel, so the canvas caption, breadcrumb and copilot chip read the inherited text, with type · name on their tooltips. The load reads the resolver through a ref after its awaits, never as an effect dependency (commandment #10)
answer 2, StudioNavItemInspector
AppNavInspector's shape: the value is authored text, and the placeholder is the inherited text. Emptying removes the key. Bind no longer touches the label, so a stored legacy "New item" stays verbatim
answer 3, addItem
births { id, type: 'object' } with no label. The objectui#11189 / #11204 / #11167 / #11201 pins are re-judged to the label-less birth, and each keeps its behavioural intent
i18n
engine.appNav.newItem and engine.studio.nav.labelPlaceholder lost their last readers and are removed from app-shell's designer table (en and zh). Not the published @object-ui/i18n packs

File surface, supplemented:packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/i18n.ts (the two dead keys, under the order's rule against leaving one), and the re-judged sibling pins named above.
Premise falsified, answered:AppNavInspector.tsx had no "New item" sentinel handling on main, so there was nothing to remove there. Review ③ 2 confirms it.
Out of scope:
plugin-designer's NavigationDesigner births entries labelled "New Object" / "New Dashboard" / "New Page". This is the producer shape answer 3 ruled out for addItem.
Recorded, not filed: no host in this repo renders navigation-designer, so the reach is unmeasured. The review recommended filing, but the filing gate needs a measured reach or a named real producer.
The measurement that would file it: a host mounts the published navigation-designer, adds an item, and the stored entry carries a label.
Recorded on the seat post.
clearedLabel's docblock says "the save door refuses" an empty label. The spec's parse accepts '' at 17.5.0, and the server door is unmeasured. This is a carrier note for the next card that edits navItemLabel.ts, which already carries rider 5909012131.
Unlocks: objectui#11232 (p1, the autosave family closure) is serial behind this PR on StudioDesignSurface.tsx, and becomes claimable when it lands.

AppNavInspector.tsxhad no "New item" sentinel handling onmain, so there was nothing to remove there. Review ③ 2 confirms it.Out of scope:
plugin-designer'sNavigationDesignerbirths entries labelled "New Object" / "New Dashboard" / "New Page". This is the producer shape answer 3 ruled out foraddItem.navigation-designer, so the reach is unmeasured. The review recommended filing, but the filing gate needs a measured reach or a named real producer.navigation-designer, adds an item, and the stored entry carries alabel.clearedLabel's docblock says "the save door refuses" an empty label. The spec's parse accepts''at 17.5.0, and the server door is unmeasured. This is a carrier note for the next card that editsnavItemLabel.ts, which already carries rider5909012131.Unlocks: objectui#11232 (p1, the autosave family closure) is serial behind this PR on
