finding(app-shell): the flow designer warns "not a reference in scope" on references the engine does write — the Problems panel never sees a connector action's outputs, and an edge guard never sees its source node's own outputs #11085

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing-gate category: ① a product defect with a named site, class (a). One family card with two enumerated sites: both are the designer's flow-scope resolution disagreeing with what the engine writes. reach: the flow designer's Problems panel and the edge inspector's scope note, measured by the objectui#11028 dev's function-level probe of the same pure functions those surfaces call (not a browser run). Reader: triage first (grade and route), then the seat that dispatches it. Filed by domain:ui seat 2 (session_011p7ikEivgXefNDaE5S5Uec) from the objectui#11028 dev report (PR objectui#11084, out_of_scope_findings), confirmed by that PR's contract review (5888561912, ③ F1 and F2) as honest findings, not that PR's to fix. ⛔ Not graded here.

1. The Problems panel never sees a connector action's declared outputs

PR objectui#11084 lets the node and edge inspectors offer and accept nodeId.key for each top-level properties key of a committed connector action's outputSchema, read from the served connector registry.

The Problems panel still flags those references. packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/previews/flow-expr-problems.ts flowExpressionProblems is pure and is reached through buildFlowProblems. It calls resolveFlowScope(draft, nodeId) and resolveFlowScope(draft, source) without a registry, so it can never see those keys. Measured: a guard post.ok == true downstream of a committed connector action is reported "post is not a reference in scope at this step", although the engine writes post.ok.

The verdict is a warning (an amber badge and a panel row; nothing is gated on it). After objectui#11084 lands, two surfaces disagree on the same reference.

2. An edge guard never sees its source node's own outputs

The edge inspector's scope note (the objectui#1934 anchor in FlowEdgeInspector.tsx) and the Problems panel both resolve an edge's scope as resolveFlowScope(draft, edge.source). resolveFlowScope excludes the node it is asked about, so a node's own outputs are never in scope on its own out-edge.

The engine's traverseNext evaluates out-edge guards after the node's output write-back. That is the objectui#11028 dev's reading of objectstack source; re-verify it against objectstack origin/main.

Measured: an edge guard lead.status == 'open' right after a get_record whose outputVariable is lead is reported not in scope, while the same guard one node further downstream is clean. This is pre-existing for every node type, for example an approval node's nodeId.decision on its own out-edge. objectui#11084 did not make it worse; a connector action's keys simply join the class.

Direction (for triage, not a ruling)

  • Site 1: hand the connector registry to buildFlowProblems from the panel's component. That is a new read site in previews/, gated as the inspectors gate theirs (only when the draft holds a committed connector action). Then thread it through to resolveFlowScope, which already takes it as an optional last argument after objectui#11084.
  • Site 2: an edge's scope is "everything in scope at the source node, plus the source node's own outputs". The engine ordering above is the premise; measure it first.
  • Pins: per site, the reference the engine writes draws no warning, and a reference no node writes still does (the lit control).
  • Serial behind PR objectui#11084 (the same flow-scope.ts).

Path: approvals and automation — the designer warns only about references the engine won't write | 缺项 (the Problems panel resolves scope without the connector registry, and an out-edge guard's scope excludes its own source node's outputs) | P3

Triage: first grade — bug · priority:p3 · domain:ui · area:workflow · pm:queue. Direction: both sites, with the engine ordering confirmed. Serial behind PR objectui#11084

    Triage: lands in packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/previews/flow-expr-problems.ts, flow-scope.ts and FlowEdgeInspector.tsx ⇒ domain:ui.

    Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-09-29T11:05Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.

Why p3. Both are false warnings: an amber badge and a panel row, with nothing gated on them. It is a tax on the author, and it takes objectui#11028's grade.

The engine premise, measured by this seat on objectstack main. In packages/services/service-automation/src/engine.ts, a node's result.output is written back as ${node.id}.${key} at :10218, and only after that is traverseNext called (:10263 / :10269). That is where out-edge conditions are evaluated. So an out-edge guard does see its source node's own outputs.

    Direction.

    1. Site 1: buildFlowProblems takes the connector registry from the panel's component, as the inspectors do: read only when the draft holds a committed connector action. It threads the registry into resolveFlowScope's optional last argument (after PR objectui#11084).
    2. Site 2: an edge's scope is the scope at its source node plus the source node's own outputs. It is one helper used by both the edge inspector's note and the Problems panel. ⛔ Don't patch each caller.
    • Pins, per site:
      • A reference the engine writes draws no warning (post.ok after a connector action; lead.status on the out-edge of a get_record with outputVariable: lead).
      • A reference no node writes still warns (the control).
    • Serial behind PR objectui#11084: the same flow-scope.ts.

    • flow-scope.ts: one helper for an edge's scope, meaning the scope at its source node plus the source node's own outputs. Both FlowEdgeInspector.tsx's note and the Problems panel use it. ⛔ No per-caller patch.
    • Pins per site: a reference the engine writes draws no warning (post.ok after a connector action; lead.status on the out-edge of a get_record with outputVariable: lead); a reference no node writes still warns. One changeset.

    Seat answer to open_questions[0] of os-dev-report 5896152827: A. The host edit lands on this claim after objectui#10862 slice 4 · domain:ui seat 2 · 2026-09-29T18:31Z

session_011p7ikEivgXefNDaE5S5Uec. This is an ordering question between two in-flight cards of this seat. It changes no product behaviour, so the seat rules it; nothing goes to the decision box.

    • Route A. The remaining host wiring is three lines in packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/previews/FlowPreview.tsx: useConnectorRegistry(hasCommittedConnectorAction(d)) passed into buildFlowProblems, plus the problems memo's deps. It lands as a patch round on this claim (5895412336), on PR objectui#11133's branch, after objectui#10862 slice 4 has merged. The dev stopped at that file because slice 4 edits it in parallel.
      • The PR body is written once and is not PATCHed, so it keeps Part of #11085. Once the patched PR has merged and its content is verified, the seat closes the card (completed).
      • B (slice 4 carries the lines) would widen another card's PR with this card's behaviour. C (merge the dormant argument, then file a follow-up) would land a parameter no caller passes and add a card. Neither is taken.
    • Until then, PR objectui#11133 stays a draft at 2be3ab1a2 and is not contract-reviewed. A review now would be void after the patch round's push. The review runs once, on the patched head.
    • State. The card stays pm:dispatched, and the claim is live. It waits on objectui#10862 slice 4 (claim 5895363747, this seat, in flight) from 2026-09-29T18:31Z.

The host wiring then landed in previews/FlowPreview.tsx (bf37480d5): useConnectorRegistry(hasCommittedConnectorAction(d)) is read beside the problems memo, passed into buildFlowProblems and added to the memo's deps. With the pure half and site 2 from round 1, both sites are now complete. A later node's `post.ok` after a committed connector action draws no Problems-panel row and no canvas badge, a `ghost.ok` still does, and a flow with no committed connector action never reads the registry. (4) pnpm --workspace-concurrency=2 --filter '@object-ui/app-shell^...' build VERDICT command-exit 0, then pnpm --filter @object-ui/app-shell type-check VERDICT command-exit 0; tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --listFilesOnly lists the new host pin. (5) eslint --format json on the 11 changed TS files vs main: 11 files, 0 errors, 4 warnings, all pre-existing. There are two no-explicit-any on FlowEdgeInspector's '(draft as any).edges' line. FlowPreview carries react-hooks/exhaustive-deps (missing 'variables' on the problems memo) and one no-explicit-any; both are present identically in main's FlowPreview.tsx, measured by linting main's blob as a throwaway probe file, which was then deleted. Type-aware linting is not enabled, so the diff cannot move a verdict on an untouched file. (6) Light checks re-run at a2f67a9b1, all exit 0: check-changeset-presence, check-control-bytes, check-new-cross-file-line-citations (0 new), check-changeset-claims, check-pending-changeset-literals, check-changeset-no-major, check-changeset-fixed, check-vi-mock-specifiers, check-vi-mock-inherit, check-vi-mock-override-shape, check-test-path-roots. ABLATION A4 (objectstack scripts/ablation-replace.mjs wrap mode on the committed bf37480d5): FlowPreview stops passing connectors to buildFlowProblems, anchor hit x1, blob changed -> 1 failed / 3 passed. Only the positive host pin went red; the lit control, the ghost control and the no-fetch pin stayed green. Restore was proven: blob == HEAD and git diff HEAD empty. The first A4 attempt was a lock queue-timeout (exit 99, never acquired, mutation never applied, tree clean): NOT MEASURED; the same slot then acquired. Round 1's ablations A1-A3 stand for the unchanged pure layers.",

✅ ACCEPT: PR objectui#11133 at a2f67a9b1 (both sites); ready and auto-merge follow this ACCEPT, and the seat closes this card after the merge

domain:ui seat 2, session_011p7ikEivgXefNDaE5S5Uec. Checked against the diff and the head's check-runs, not against the report's own account.

    • Claim 5895412336, on triage 5888978460.
    • Dev reports 5896152827 (round 1) and 5898745840 (the patch round, under seat answer 5896244537).
    • Contract review 5898929097, at CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER: PASS on this head. It judged whether the diff completes the card, not the body's first line.

    item reading
site 2 An edge guard's scope includes its source node's outputs, from one rule: edgeSourceOutputRefs / resolveEdgeScope in flow-scope.ts, and useEdgeScope beside useFlowScope. There are none on a fault edge or an edge leaving start. The edge inspector's note and picker and the Problems panel's edge scan read the same rule. This matches the engine: result.output is written back as node.id.key before traverseNext evaluates the out-edge guards
site 1 flowExpressionProblems / buildFlowProblems take the connector registry. FlowPreview.tsx reads useConnectorRegistry(hasCommittedConnectorAction(d)) into the problems memo and its deps. So a later node's post.ok after a committed connector action draws no Problems row or badge, while a ghost.ok still does. A flow with no committed connector action never reads the registry
how it landed Round 1 stopped at FlowPreview.tsx, which objectui#10862 slice 4 held. After PR objectui#11134 merged, the patch round merged main with a merge commit (no rebase) and wired the three host lines
tests Round 1 ablations A1–A3 on the pure layers; round 2's A4 on the host turns red exactly the positive host pin. The pin reads the Problems rows and badges; the banner is error-only (bannerErrors)
changeset '@object-ui/app-shell': patch, whose last paragraph names the user-visible Problems-panel fix; Clause-②: no
    CI head a2f67a9b1: 43 runs, 40 success, 3 expected skips, 0 failure
    size 12 files, +560 / −17
closing keywords Part of #11085: the body was written in round 1, and a PR body is written once. The seat closes this card completed after the merge is verified, per answer 5896244537
governed none of the 12 paths is on objectui's governed surfaces

Out of scope, one line: a START node's out-edge resolves the start node's own scope with bare trigger fields. Whether the engine binds bare fields when it evaluates a start node's out-edge guards was not measured. The review found it pre-existing and untouched: only the edge inspector's picker offers the bare spelling, and the Problems panel skips start-source edges. Acceptance notes, carrier: none; not filed, since there is no measured reach. The next step is a measurement of the engine's start-node out-edge guard context, recorded on the seat post.

    Closed completed: PR objectui#11133 landed both sites · domain:ui seat 2 · 2026-09-29T21:34Z

    session_011p7ikEivgXefNDaE5S5Uec. Claim 5895412336; seat answer 5896244537 (route A); ACCEPT 5899018667.

PR objectui#11133 merged through the queue as f75e1f7e0. It was verified by content on origin/main: all 12 of its files are blob-identical to the PR head a2f67a9b1, and the squash commit's only co-author trailer is the model-free Claude.

The PR body says Part of #11085 because it was written in round 1, when the host lines were blocked on previews/FlowPreview.tsx, which objectui#10862 slice 4 held at the time. A PR body is written once. The patch round landed those host lines on this same claim after PR objectui#11134 merged. The contract review (5898929097) judged that the diff completes the card, with both sites live:

    • Site 1. The Problems panel's scan no longer warns on a committed connector action's outputs that a later node references.
    • Site 2. An edge guard's scope includes its source node's outputs, through one rule on both surfaces.

As answer 5896244537 stated, the seat closes the card itself.

Recorded, not filed (unmeasured): whether the engine binds bare trigger fields when it evaluates a START node's out-edge guards (ACCEPT 5899018667).
