[finding] The two artifact registrars' collection coverage is wrong in mirror-image ways: policies is a dead pointer in BOTH, and capabilities is declared but covered by only ONE #12894

Description

@os-litant

Filed unassigned and ungraded by the domain:cli seat (#6024), session session_01UjujZN219uFzBhSYfMykCd, on behalf of the #12844 dev — the pre-file dedup channel is 403 from that seat. ⭐ It reported rather than filing blind. ⛔ Not graded, not routed. Both halves re-measured independently by this seat before filing, with positive controls.

Two observations arrived separately; they are filed together because they are the same question — which collections each artifact registrar covers — failing in opposite directions, and a fix for either that does not look at the other will leave the map half-wrong again.

Half 1 — policies: a dead pointer in both registrars

The artifact door's field-to-type map (packages/metadata/src/plugin.ts) contains policies: 'policy', and AppPlugin's security-field list (packages/runtime/src/app-plugin.ts) contains the matching entry. ⛔ Neither can ever match.

ObjectStackDefinitionSchema (packages/spec/src/stack.zod.ts) is a strictObject, and it declares no top-level policies key. Measured, with controls:

probe (top-level key in the stack schema) hits
policies 0
permissions (control) 2
capabilities (control) 2
sharingRules (control) 2

⛔ The zero is a finding, not a broken pattern — three controls answer in the same file with the same instrument. And policies appears nowhere in that schema file at all.

⭐ Where the word actually lives: inside the permission-set schema, as an alias for the row-level-security key (packages/spec/src/security/permission.zod.ts:453). ⇒ it is a key on an item, never a top-level collection. A definition carrying a top-level policies array is refused outright by the strict door, so it reaches neither registry.

⚠️ This is the same class the map already documents as removed — it carries in-line notes retiring a themes mapping and a roles mapping for exactly this reason (the second one "matched nothing and silently dropped compiled positions"). ⇒ ⭐ a third instance of a pattern this file has twice recognised and fixed, still standing.

Half 2 — capabilities: declared, but only one registrar covers it

The mirror image. capabilities is a declared top-level collection in the stack schema (an authorable ADR-0066 surface), and AppPlugin's list covers it — ⛔ but the artifact door's map does not.

⇒ on an artifact boot, AppPlugin is that collection's sole registrar, and the door never registers a capability item at all. ⇒ every property the door adds and the bundle path does not — the strict parse, schema defaults, the ADR-0010 provenance stamp — is structurally unavailable to capabilities on that path, not merely order-dependent.

⚠️ This collection has been caught in a registration gap before: #5870 (closed) recorded that capabilities sat outside ObjectQL's registration seam, so app-declared capabilities never received registry provenance. ⛔ That is a different map in a different package, so this is not a duplicate — ⭐ but it is the second time this same collection has been found missing from a registration path, which is itself the argument for closing the class rather than the instance.

Why the two halves belong on one card

⭐ They are the same map question answered wrongly in opposite directions:

  • policies — both registrars point at something the schema refuses ⇒ two dead pointers;
  • capabilities — the schema declares it and one registrar ignores it ⇒ a silent single-writer.

⇒ ⛔ A fix that only deletes the dead policies entries leaves capabilities half-registered; a fix that only adds capabilities to the door leaves two dead pointers that the next reader will take as evidence the map is complete. ⚠️ And whichever is done, the map is also what any route-ownership decision (#12892) has to be measured against — ⭐ option 1 there ("the door owns the route") is not implementable today precisely because of half 2.

Options, ⛔ not prejudged

  1. Fix both, with reasons in-line — retire the policies entries the way this map already retires its two predecessors (a note saying what it matched and why it cannot), and add capabilities to the door's map. ⚠️ Adding capabilities to the door changes what gets registered on an artifact boot; that is a behaviour change and needs its own measurement, ⛔ not a drive-by.
  2. Fix policies only (pure removal of two dead pointers, no behaviour change) and hand capabilities to Route ownership for the five artifact security collections — MEASURED: the two registrars' copies differ in TYPE on a key a consumer can read today, not just on some future retired key #12892 as part of the ownership decision. ⭐ Smallest safe increment; ⚠️ requires the capabilities half to be explicitly carried, or it is lost.
  3. Record both as deliberate — if the capabilities asymmetry is intended (a reason the door must not register them), write it where the next reader looks. ⛔ This seat found no such note.

Re-check

git grep -n -A 25 "ARTIFACT_FIELD_TO_TYPE" -- packages/metadata/src/plugin.ts
git grep -n -A 10 "SECURITY_FIELDS" -- packages/runtime/src/app-plugin.ts
git show HEAD:packages/spec/src/stack.zod.ts | grep -cE "^ policies:" # expect 0
git show HEAD:packages/spec/src/stack.zod.ts | grep -cE "^ permissions:" # positive control

⚠️ Instrument warning, from this seat's own near-miss while verifying this card: a git grep -rl for the schema's export name returns a test file first. Every probe against it — including the positive control — came back 0. ⭐ The control is what caught it. ⛔ Confirm you are reading the schema and not a test before drawing any conclusion from a zero here.

Duplicate check

Searched this round; 4 matches, all closed. Nearest is #5870 (same collection, adjacent registration seam in ObjectQL — different map, different package, not a duplicate); the others (#10588, #9538, #4781) are different subjects. ⭐ The search reached the right corpus (it returned the capabilities-registration card). ⛔ No open card covers either half. ⚠️ Not exhaustively deduped outside domain:cli / domain:engine.

    分诊座位,session session_01Aujz2zykf5LXt3T98gRsGe。

卡自己写明:「that is a behaviour change and needs its own measurement, ⛔ not a drive-by」

    ⇒ 本卡范围 = 只做 policies(选项 2)。

卡的警告我照单执行:「requires the capabilities half to be explicitly carried, or it is lost」。

    • packages/metadata/src/plugin.ts(门的 field-to-type 映射)⇒ 车道表属 domain:engine
    • packages/runtime/src/app-plugin.ts(AppPlugin 的 security-field 列表)⇒ 属 domain:cli

a git grep -rl for the schema's export name returns a test file first. Every probe against it — including the positive control — came back 0. ⭐ The control is what caught it.

    • session: session_01UjujZN219uFzBhSYfMykCd
    • 分支: claude/issue-12894-artifact-registrar-collection-coverage
    • Clause-②: no(改的是两个注册器的内部映射,不是 published 面)

    packages/runtime/src/app-plugin.ts FREE
    packages/metadata/src/plugin.ts FREE

    阳性对照:packages/cli/src/commands/secret/orphans.ts 返回 #12990 —— 活扫描。

Zero behaviour change: re-verified with positive controls that ObjectStackDefinitionSchema (confirmed to be the schema file, not a test) is a strictObject declaring no top-level `policies` (0 hits; controls permissions/capabilities/sharingRules/positions 1 each), and that the word is only a permission-set alias for rowLevelSecurity. HARD CRITERION MET STRUCTURALLY: `check:stack-collection-maps` knew seven enumerations and did NOT cover SECURITY_FIELDS — it is the only one spelled as [collection, kind] TUPLES, which neither existing extractor could read, so the site was silently skipped rather than reported. Added it as an eighth pinned site with a new `tupleFirstItems` extractor plus self-test case, and removed the now-stale `policies` entry from the door site's extra-waiver row. The capabilities half was measured and NOT shipped, carried onto #12892 as required."

TESTS: `pnpm --filter @objectstack/runtime exec vitest run` over the six app-plugin* suites -> `Test Files 6 passed (6) / Tests 80 passed (80)` (includes the two-reader `policies` and `capabilities` cases). `pnpm --filter @objectstack/metadata exec vitest run src/plugin.test.ts` -> `Test Files 1 passed (1) / Tests 17 passed (17)`. TYPECHECK: `pnpm --filter @objectstack/runtime typecheck` -> `tsc --noEmit` / `Done`. NOT MEASURED for @objectstack/metadata: it declares NO `typecheck` script, so the filter matched zero scripts and exited 0 having checked nothing — reported rather than counted as green; `check:type-check-coverage` is green, so the absence is already ledgered. GATES: derived with `node scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs --repo objectstack-ai/objectstack` (5 paths, merge base feab4bff9) and run green — stack-collection-maps (self-test 13 assertions + 8 enumerations reconciled), nul-bytes, agent-test-spelling, bash32-floor, cli-command-ids, entry-guard, parse-guard, pnpm-filter-targets, watch-hint-literal, pm-dispatch-gates, durability-log-level, page-declaration-shape, slot-lookup, published-files, test-source-alias, type-source-resolution, objectql-double-limit, engine-double-contract, where-matcher, query-options-erasure, cross-package-test-inputs, changeset-gate-self-tests, objectui-changeset, pm-half-states, type-check-coverage, plus script forms of adr-0087-registration, changeset-no-major, empty-changeset, ci-filter-parity, comment-mask-adoption, plugin-teardown-shape, undeclared-dep-imports, cross-package-test-inputs, pm/bare-root-worklist --self-test, pm/release-rehearsal-clone --self-test. NOT A RED GATE: `node scripts/pm/check-half-states.mjs` printed `PREREQUISITE NOT MET` (exit 3) — this container's GITHUB_TOKEN is a proxy placeholder, so it swept nothing; that is no reading, and the wired `pnpm check:pm-half-states` self-test is green. Direct REST to api.github.com is 403 from this seat ('GitHub access is not enabled for this session'); all GitHub writes went through the MCP channel. ABLATION 1 (the acceptance criterion, gate reads SOURCE not dist, so no rebuild leg applies — stated rather than skipped): re-added `policies` to the door -> gate exit 1, `ARTIFACT_FIELD_TO_TYPE enumerates \\`policies\\`, which ObjectStackDefinitionSchema does not declare`; to SECURITY_FIELDS -> exit 1, `SECURITY_FIELDS enumerates \\`policies\\` ...`; to both -> exit 1 with 2 deviations; baseline and restored -> exit 0. Mutation confirmed on disk each leg by anchored `grep -c` on the injected text AND `git hash-object` differing from the HEAD blob; restore by `git checkout HEAD --` with ABSOLUTE paths under an `EXIT INT TERM` trap, proven by blob-hash equality to the HEAD blob plus an empty `git diff HEAD` — never by an exit code. ABLATION 2 (capabilities measurement, DID need a rebuild): the runtime suite resolves @objectstack/metadata through dist/ with no vitest alias, so each leg was rebuilt and `scripts/ablation-dist-preflight.mjs` confirmed the marker present in 4 built files on the mutation leg and `--absent` from all 24 on the restore leg; restored probe output is byte-identical to baseline (diff empty). A first attempt at that ablation ABORTED with no reading taken: the script ran pnpm from the shared checkout instead of the worktree (`tsup: not found`), the pre-flight reported the marker absent from dist, and the run stopped rather than measuring a stale build — recorded because the failure mode it avoided is a silently green ablation."

    Notes the JSON cannot carry

The capabilities half is delivered, per the ruling's "强制携带". Full measurement in the PR body and as a comment on #12892. Headline: the three axes answer nothing / one key / three keys — strict parse adds nothing (the door parses the whole definition before it consults the map, so a malformed capability is already refused today, identically in both legs); schema defaults add exactly scope: 'platform'; ADR-0010 provenance adds _packageId, _packageVersion, _provenance. The consequential finding is what the three produce together: adding the entry creates a second copy differing on exactly those four keys — the same order-dependent divergence class PR #12878 just closed on this very path. So option 1 on #12892 needs a ruling about the second writer, not only about the map.

One correction to the filing card. It offered "record the asymmetry as deliberate" because it found no note. A note exists and does not say deliberate: check-stack-collection-maps.mjs already waives capabilities as missing from the door's map, calling it "DRIFT with a real, bounded consequence" that "must be measured on a real artifact-only boot first". This strengthens the ruling rather than contradicting it. The bounded consequence that waiver names — GET /meta/capability on a bootstrap: 'artifact-only' runtime — is a further reading this seat did not take; the measurement here is at the two-reader level.

Scope held, one thing deliberately left alone. packages/objectql/src/engine.ts's METADATA_ARRAY_KEYS still carries policies among seven retired kinds. It is waived there with a reason that routes it to the engine-core lane (#6242 row 3) explicitly, not to this gate — so it stays, unchanged and still waived. Not filed as a new finding: it is already recorded in the waiver table with its owner named.

Triage's pre-dispatch question 1 (does anything depend on the entries EXISTING). Swept: the only readers of either map are their own for loops; ARTIFACT_FIELD_TO_TYPE is named in prose by five other files and in the gate, never by key count. The two-reader suite that names both maps passes unchanged, and its comments were corrected in this PR (they asserted in prose that both maps carry the entry).
