Not sure how best to describe this, but the auto-indent in the editor fails to actually render the initial spaces.
The column indicator in the status line shows what the correct position should be and typing anything except a space will place the cursor at the correct alignment. However, typing space leaves the cursor at the beginning of the line while increasing the column number in the status line. Typing anything else after hitting space for a while puts that value to the screen at the indicated column position.
