This might be stepping too far beyond the scope of nvim-tree, which is a file explorer.

Alternative ideas:

1. Highight open buffers: Buffer Modified Icon / Highlight As Per Git / Diagnostics #1577
2. Filter to show only opened buffers. I think this has been proposed however I cannot find a reference.

There are numerous plugins such as telescope and bufexplorer which allow navigation of open buffers.

A nice solution might be something like:

Some plugin may exist or an existing plugin may be configured to occupy 1 which will achieve the functionality in the above mockup.

It also has a git status / dirty tree.

Examining my workflow I'm currently using bufexplorer for open buffers and a combination of fzf#gitfiles and fugitive for git status.

Cheap options: toggle filter open buffers and git dirty.

toggle_git_dirty and toggle_open_buffer actions along with respective filters settings is an achievable first step.

Unlike the other filters they are inverted and would not function with filters.exclude. toggle_git_none or maybe toggle_git_clean and toggle_no_buffer would be necessary.

Another useful bit of functionality could be filters.custom taking a function as an alternative to the regex table.

git.ignore should also be silently refactored to filters.gitignore.

    Do not show files with no git status. This will show ignored files when
    |nvim-tree.git.ignore| is set, as they are effectively dirty.
    Toggle via the `toggle_git_clean` action, default mapping `C`.
      Type: `boolean`, Default: `false`

    *nvim-tree.filters.no_buffer*
    Do not show files that have no listed buffer.
    Toggle via the `toggle_no_buffer` action, default mapping `B`.
      Type: `boolean`, Default: `false`
