What branch/version and which of the contributing guides to use?

Is io.js working towards a 1.0.0 release? If so, can we do away with the v0.10/v0.12 branches and work from master, merge whatever's needed back into master?

The contributing guides are out of sync between the branches as well.

If I recall correctly, first on the roadmap is to make a v0.12 release, which we will then work towards a v1.0. I'm not sure what the v0.10 branch is doing, as we have neither v0.9 nor v0.11. I'm not sure about the master branch either, since it doesn't seem we use that anyways.

edit: ooh, just missed the new and fancy v1.x branch.

Now that io.js is released we probably need to establish 1.0.x branch for fixes and 2.x branch (or just use master) for breaking changes

Stick to v1.x for the time being.
