This is advanced warning of an issue that may occur when Node.js 27 Alpha is released with npm@12, planned for Oct 28, 2026.
Dependencies of lru-cache appear to be using npm with an unknown option --log-level.
The correct option is loglevel, not log-level. For instance:
npm install --loglevel info # succeeds on npm@12
npm install --log-level info # fails on npm@12
One of the breaking changes in npm@12.0.0 is:
unknown CLI flags, abbreviated flags, and single-hyphen multi-char shorthands now throw instead of warning. (Unknown .npmrc configs still warn by default; opt into erroring with the new strict-npmrc config.)
Situation
Running citgm lru-cache fails running Node.js v27 nightly
npm notice run tap
npm error code EUNKNOWNCONFIG
npm error Unknown cli flag:
npm error - --log-level
npm error Run `npm help config` for supported options.
Repo CI https://github.com/isaacs/node-lru-cache/blob/main/.github/workflows/ci.yml runs in Node.js 24 & 25
Steps to reproduce
On Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, with n Node.js version manager installed.
n nightly # for instance v27.0.0-nightly202610086d5e309871
git clone https://github.com/isaacs/node-lru-cache
cd node-lru-cache
npm install
npm test
Also reproducible with:
n nightly # for instance v27.0.0-nightly202610086d5e309871
npm install citgm@latest -g
citgm lru-cache
