What if annotated tag has no difference with its parent??

I have read all about the FAQ in README, and understand the reason why we don't tag to the parent. But I have a thought. Can we tag to the parent if "git diff" shows there is no difference between them?

I am also wondering this exact same thing. Would it perhaps be difficult to detect between them in a mixed repository?

Bumping this because I've been migrating projects to Git and had to add this in myself so the history wasn't broken. I can't imagine there are many people that would introduce changes with a tag. If they are, they're doing it wrong anyway. There should at least be an option to enable tagging off the parent.
