The https://help.nextcloud.com site won't let me login.
And I can't get to this page https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/issuetemplate because the installation failed. I may have overused the Details tag. :-)

Steps to reproduce

1. Use the webpage based version upgrade to go from the latest Production channel of 16 to the latest regular channel of 17.0.1.
2. Click the button to leave maintenance mode and go back to the site to finish the installation.
3. Nothing happens. The site doesn't load, the page is a white screen, the view source option shows NULL content.

I took the liberty of deleting all the log data before the activities I did to do an upgrade.

Here's the real story! It's the crap I did.

Notes on what happened after the site wouldn't load to finish the updates/install of upgrade
I've been through a lot of flawless upgrades over the years and a handful of failures. Each failure is a little different than the last. Because of messages about some apps that didn't have an upgrade candidate for 17, I disabled all the listed apps before trying to upgrade.

This was the first time after the initial upgrade page finished that there was no page to go back to. By that I mean, while in the Admin page for Overview where it tells you if you can upgrade to a new version, you click the button to upgrade and the page that follows goes through a procedure where it backs up files, pulls down new stuff and so on. That concludes with a binary choice depending on whether the user did a web-based installer or not and the decision is about staying in or leaving maintenance mode. I chose to leave maintenance mode (turn it off) and then I had nothing. The page that happened next was devoid of any content. No colors, no CSS, no data, no header, nothing at all. Just a white screen. I tried looking at older problems to see how they got solved before but there was trouble with signing into the help site.

I searched on Git for upgrade to 17 problems and thought this would work

Somebody with a slightly different problem got back to running by executing the `php occ upgrade` command from inside the web-root folder for Nextcloud. This is the content of what transpired in the shell: (it almost worked, see uncaught exceptions near the end)

Thanks @kesselb we chipped away at it!

I found the file and did this to line 80, // $this->checker->runInstanceVerification();. I know I was at 100% for all checks passed on the admin page while still in 16. Maybe it's my quirk of forcing it to upgrade to 17 by switching from Production to Stable channels? My only motivation for switching was to get rid of the status message from the Passwords app about needing to get to 17 for it to continue working. That app became VERY important to me in a short time. 🙄

Oh. Seems to be that the integrity check is triggered from another code. Well we need to fix the actual issue than ;) The integrity check fails when validating the mime type aliases. Is there a file config/mimetypealiases.json? If so please rename it for the upgrade. I suspect that the content is not valid json.

• Revert the changes to lib/private/Repair/NC16/RemoveCypressFiles.php (remove the comments)
• EXTRA_FILE are unexpected files. I don't know why there are there. Probably a packaging problem. Should be safe to delete them. But have a backup just in case ;)

I didn't pay careful attention to the change I made to
lib/private/Repair/NC16/RemoveCypressFiles.php!

I changed this,

I went in as the admin of the virtual server in a shell prompt and ran php occ maintenance:mode --off to which it replied, This version of Nextcloud is not compatible with > PHP 7.3.<br/>You are currently running 7.4.1.

My phisical server has both PHP 7.3.13, and 7.4.1 installed as of two days ago and Nextcloud was running on it okay. Because this new snag might have an easier fix with my Virtualmin hosting software, I'm contacting them too, but why is Nextcloud being so specific about PHP?

As nextcloud 17 was released no php7.4 was available. It's not tested fully against php7.4 hence the version is blocked. Otherwise you can also patch the versioncheck.php file and remove the check.

php occ maintenance:mode --off

If your system has multiple php versions pick the right one ;) If php occ worked before your upgrade session its likely that the default changed. Use the search engine of your choice and look for update-alternatives php.

I found this site and poked around a bit with PHP, then ran this command as the physical server admin, sudo update-alternatives --config php.

There are 2 choices for the alternative php (providing /usr/bin/php).

The same solution I replied with in comment 562871846 solved this problem. I'm back up and running again, but that mimetypealiases.json file still seems to be a problem.

Probably. But that's a file under your control (to add a alias for a mimetype). Future nextcloud versions will ignore such files if they contain invalid json and log a warning. In the meantime use a service like https://jsonformatter.curiousconcept.com to validate the file. If you don't need the alias (right now it does not work anyway) just delete the mimetypealiases.json.
