Opened by Netliloop run #256 (reduce-change-failure-risk)

Why

Three missing boundary checks let Build plugins receive quoted Git filenames, miss project-local binaries, or launch children without the requested working directory and environment. Running the new regression cases against unchanged source produced eight failures out of nine cases. Tracked in FRB-2358.

What changed

  • Read NUL-delimited Git filenames so added, modified, and deleted paths retain their actual spelling, including Unicode and control characters.
  • Pass the merged local-binary defaults to run.command(), while preserving an explicit preferLocal: false.
  • Preserve run(file, undefined, options) options. Add regression tests using real temporary repositories and child processes; existing CI runs both packages.

How we verified

  • npm test --workspace=@netlify/run-utils: 11 passed. env -u CACHED_COMMIT_REF npm test --workspace=@netlify/git-utils: 22 passed. Complete output.
  • npx tsc --project packages/{run-utils,git-utils}/tsconfig.json --noEmit (one invocation per package), ESLint and oxfmt --check on all four changed files: passed, in the same receipt.
  • The same 33 tests passed on Node 22.12.0, the oldest supported CI version, as well as Node 24.21.0. Minimum-version output.
  • Independent verification booted the real Build plugin child and drove parent IPC → onBuild → getUtils → Git/Execa: 23 total file statuses, including the rename, an empty diff, local command resolution, option forwarding, errors and stdout all passed. No services were mocked; a TypeScript loader loaded the workspace source instead of generated lib files. Commands, outputs and rerun instructions; plugin-worker output.
  • Independent mutation checks broke each fix and the explicit-local-override and ordinary-space controls: every affected test failed, then all nine new cases passed after restoration. Detailed assertion failures, exact commands, source checksums and restored output at commit 230647c7367df102de1e1c025dc6acf00e5d605b.

Real Build plugin worker verifies Git paths and child commands

Real plugin-worker checks pass for mixed changes and an empty diff. Full asciinema recording.

Standalone scripts reproduce the plugin-worker and mutation checks

Download these files into one directory: source-loader.mjs, plugin-boundary.mjs, plugin.mjs, mutations.py. Follow the commands in the verification receipt.

Stronger child-directory check passes; exact harness update and raw output

Apply this patch to the downloaded harness with patch -p0 < distinct-cwd.patch, then rerun the command in the receipt. It requests a child directory different from the plugin's own working directory, so dropping only cwd fails the check.

The updated harness ran successfully against commit 230647c7367df102de1e1c025dc6acf00e5d605b:

PASS real child boot → IPC load → onBuild → getUtils → Git/execa: mixed changes plus rename
23 exact path statuses + fileMatch; local bin defaults and explicit override
Omitted argv distinct child cwd + env; child exit errors; default stdout forwarding
PASS real child boot → IPC load → onBuild → getUtils → Git/execa: empty diff
0 exact path statuses + fileMatch; local bin defaults and explicit override
Omitted argv distinct child cwd + env; child exit errors; default stdout forwarding

The GIF shows the earlier harness run and reformats its PASS summaries into shorter lines. The linked raw output and executable scripts are the assertion evidence; the stronger distinct-directory case above was run afterward. A subsequent live recording was checked against the new raw output byte for byte:

PASS recorded live test output exactly matches independent harness stdout
  • At current head 2b2fe9b34d093545eb843c2bf03eed6c28d8b0fd, the Windows test assertions accept platform-specific command failures and canonicalize both cwd paths. Both package suites still pass on Node 22.12.0 and 24.21.0; the five isolated mutation groups were repeated and still fail as intended, followed by nine passing restored cases. Source implementations match the linked original proof.

  • At current head 2b2fe9b34d093545eb843c2bf03eed6c28d8b0fd, the GitHub platform, end-to-end, and static-analysis checks passed, including the Build platform matrix and end-to-end job, compiled package tests on Linux/macOS/Windows, CodeQL and dependency analysis. CircleCI formatting and the global browser E2E suite also passed.

What is left to test

Published release artifacts and staging/production rollout are unverified because this branch has not been released or deployed. No CI test remains pending at the final 04:40 UTC check. The real Linux plugin worker ran locally against workspace source, and compiled packages plus all three operating systems passed in CI.

Risk

Medium. These are two shared Build plugin utilities; incorrect filename or command resolution can make a plugin skip work or run the wrong binary. FRB-2358.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Git change detection now correctly handles filenames containing spaces, non-English characters, and other special characters, including tabs and line breaks where supported.
    • Commands consistently honor execution options, resolve project-local tools by default, and preserve working-directory and environment options when arguments are omitted. Disabling local-tool preference continues to report missing commands as expected. Returned argument options are also preserved when no arguments are supplied.

Walkthrough

The Git utilities now parse NUL-delimited name-status output to preserve filenames in diff results. The run utilities now pass merged default options to execaCommand and preserve supplied options when the arguments array is omitted. Tests cover filename handling and run command option behavior.

Isolate both Git call paths from repository-location variables.

When GIT_DIR or GIT_WORK_TREE is inherited, runGit passes it to git, and getGitUtils inherits it through tinyexec. Git can then use a repository or work tree other than cwd, which can fail this test or modify an unrelated repository.

Remove both variables for the test's Git processes. Restore them in finally. Sanitizing only gitEnv does not protect getGitUtils.
