Removes tar for the lighter weight modern-tar which does the same job when combined with node:fs.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Refactor
    • Edge bundles continue to include the expected files and preserve existing runtime and manifest behavior.
    • Packaged archives use consistent relative paths and standardized metadata, supporting predictable bundle contents.
    • Compressed archives are processed as streams during packaging and integration checks, while archive listing and extraction checks continue to verify their contents.

Walkthrough

The bundler now creates tarballs with modern-tar and streams them through gzip. Archive entries use relative paths and fixed metadata. Shared test utilities now list and extract tarballs with modern-tar. Bundler and integration tests use the updated listing and extraction workflows.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~15 minutes

Change: Refactor

Suggested reviewers: pieh

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 70988

The integration workflow awaits extraction correctly. Permission-only changes can still alter bundle hashes, with less normalization than before; merging requires awareness of this bounded reproducibility regression.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6138a

The archive remains gzip-compressed tar, and the changed extraction helpers remain test utilities. File permissions now depend on the staged files rather than the previous portable handling. No new production entrypoint or privilege escalation was demonstrated, but deployment-side permission enforcement remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · observed: The writer removes the previous portable metadata handling and inherits staged-file permission bits without an explicit mode policy. This makes archive permissions build-dependent. Whether downstream extraction permits broader access is unresolved because the production consumer's enforcement policy was unavailable.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The traced exposure covers generated edge-function assets and repository test extraction destinations. A broader tenant, service, or privileged filesystem impact cannot be established without the deployment reader and its permission policy.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Observed helper callers are repository tests consuming generated archives. runTarball retains temporary-directory extraction, Deno execution in that directory, and finally-based cleanup. Its new helper delegates path and symlink enforcement to modern-tar/fs; extractor-level confinement was not fully verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit archive permission policy and validate it against the production deployment reader, including writable modes and symlink handling. This would resolve the compatibility gap without assuming that metadata alone grants additional authority.

🟡 Minor · Normalize archive modes before hashing. · tarball.ts:205-212

packages/edge-bundler/node/formats/tarball.ts:205-212
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize archive modes before hashing.

modern-tar uses the source stat.mode when FileSource.mode is unset. The previous node-tar call used portable: true, which removed group and other write bits before writing headers. This PR therefore makes modes such as 0644 and 0664 produce different archive bytes and hashes. Normalize regular files to 0644, and preserve executable entries as 0755 when required.

The rest of this PR LGTM, but I'd feel better about it if someone with domain expertise reviewed the finer behavioural details of this diff here. Maybe @JakeChampion?
