Any idea what's the battery used for? I have 2 of the AU Menulog devices and it would be nice to remove the printer and have the screen section

The purpose of the battery is to keep the device powered-on long enough to shutdown correctly. I'm not sure if you can use the battery as a dedicated power-source.

Solution 1:
You could find the main boards specs online, find the power-supply requirements and possibly re-solder the battery to the main power on the PCB. As long as the battery meets the voltage requirements and have sufficient capacity, you may find your answer.

The PCB should have low power requirements due to the mobile CPU used on the board and basic devices connected to it (not counting the thermal printer).

Solution 2:
You can keep the device powered-on by using the micro-usb port found on the main PCB (Under the hood) and connect it to a battery-pack or wall adapter.

Remarks:
I hope you can find the solution, I have thought about using the hinged frame on the device as a mounting point (on a wall or something) but have never gotten around to solving the power-supply issue.

Jumping into this very late but from my tinkering with these units, you can happily run the screen on its own without the printer and expansion board. if you want to remove the printer but retain the expansion board with the usb and ethernet you MUST run the unit from the 24v adaptor or it will crash. if you need a keyboard/mouse you can use an OTG cable with power passthrough and power the unit from the microusb. dont let the internal battery get too low or its very difficult to recharge it without removing it from the unit and charging it on its own.

Also when in recovery mode the machine won't turn off with the power button, I don't know if this info is useful, just an observation

From my time playing with the device, it seems that turning off the switch on the back of the unit only functions once android has fully booted.

Your options for this solution are:

• Wait for the devices internal battery to completely discharge. The battery doesn't have a very large capacity so it shouldn't take long to completely discharge.

• Completely disassemble the unit and unplug the internal battery. From the motherboard under the screen.
