fix(daemon): deliver at most one runnable qitem per seat, FIFO - #1223
akushonkamen wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
…warz#1210) deliverWakeIntent's actionable predicate only checked the qitem's own state, never whether the destination seat already held a runnable item, so a later qitem's wake was injected into the same interactive context while the seat was still processing an earlier one; the earlier item then survived until the 3-minute stalled-after-claim sweep caught it. The wake-intent claim transaction now also runs a seat-busy gate: the destination seat is occupied while another qitem on it is in-progress, or still pending with an unexpired sent wake (claim race), where the grace is queue.pickup_stall_threshold_minutes — the same knob the stalled-after-claim sweep reads — so a dropped, never-claimed wake degrades to today's visible-pending behavior instead of holding the seat forever. A held intent stays pending (recorded as held:seat-busy, never failed/superseded) and reports retained. Release: post-commit FIFO pumps re-drive a seat's pending wake intents whenever its occupier leaves the slot — create/handoff/ handoff-and-complete/unpark staging (deliverWakeIntentAfterCommit), the P34 shared deliverWakeForSuccessor path, handoff/handoff-and- complete source-seat closure, update() to a terminal or parked state, unclaim, and claim release by retiring generation. The gate, not the pump, decides: at most the oldest deliverable intent sends. drainPendingWakeIntents no longer counts a still-pending hold as progress, so an all-held page terminates. Test failure note: quiet-waiting's "different approvals with identical bytes" pinned the old double-delivery; it now asserts serialization with the same two-obligations-two-deliveries outcome. Repump the original destination when the pickup grace expires.
For a destination with an orchestrator, the standing stuck sweep does not release held wakes on the original seat. It routes its finding to the orchestrator, so the automatic pump runs on that seat instead. B can remain pending after A's wake expires until a destination-side event or daemon restart.
Repump each destination with expired delivered wakes from the periodic sweep, or schedule a pump when the pickup grace ends. Destinations without an orchestrator already receive an indirect pump from the sweep, so the fix must cover the orchestrated path.

Recheck every grouped peer before claiming it.
queue:return: can identify different qitems. Blocker completion creates one auto-unpark intent for each dependent qitem, but all intents use the blocker ID as their correlation tag. The current code checks only the first candidate, then claims all same-tag peers and sends their bodies together. Two qitems for the same seat can therefore receive wakes in one transport call.

Release the source qitem's seat, not the seat that made the call.
The handoff closes source. The seat that source occupied is source.destinationSession. input.fromSession is the seat that performed the handoff, and it can be a different seat, for example an orchestrator acting for the owner. In that case, this code checks the caller's seat, and wakes held on the freed seat stay pending until some unrelated later event. The issue requires the next qitem to be delivered when the current one finishes.
When fromSession === source.destinationSession, the self-handoff order stays the same.

Thanks, @akushonkamen, for writing up the design and the tests. How delivery should work by default is still undecided (see #1210). We're keeping this PR open as a reference for that discussion, and we aren't asking for revisions or rebases while it's open. |
Fixes #1210
What a user gets
Before: a seat could receive a later queued item's wake while still processing an earlier one —
deliverWakeIntent'sactionablepredicate (packages/daemon/src/domain/queue-repository.ts:1197) only checked the qitem's ownstate === 'pending', never whether the destination seat already held an in-flight qitem, so a create/handoff-committed wake went straight out viaperformWakeSendand the later injection clobbered the running item, which then survived until the 3-minute stalled-after-claim sweep caught it. After: at most one runnable qitem is delivered per seat, FIFO — a wake aimed at a busy seat stayspending(held:seat-busy) until the occupier leaves.Mechanics: the wake-intent claim transaction now runs a seat-busy gate — the destination seat counts as occupied while another qitem on it is in-progress, or still pending with an unexpired already-sent wake (claim race), where the grace reuses
queue.pickup_stall_threshold_minutes(the same knob the stalled-after-claim sweep reads) so a dropped, never-claimed wake degrades to today's visible-pending behavior instead of holding the seat forever. A held intent stays pending, recordedheld:seat-busy, returned asretained— neverfailed/superseded. Release rides the post-commit FIFO pumps that fire whenever the occupier leaves its slot:deliverWakeIntentAfterCommitstaging on create/handoff/handoff-and-complete/unpark, the P34 shareddeliverWakeForSuccessorpath, handoff/handoff-and-complete source-seat closure,update()to a terminal or blocked state, unclaim, and claim release via retiring generation. The pump only decides re-drive order; the gate decides what actually sends, so each pass delivers at most the oldest deliverable intent.drainPendingWakeIntentsno longer counts a still-pending hold as progress, so an all-held page terminates. Claim routing is untouched, per the maintainer's framing that the guarantee belongs at the delivery layer. How you verified it
